orienteering 30:12 [4] 3.8 km (7:57 / km) +525ft 6:34 / km

Day 4, now in northern Italy. Part forest, part alpine meadows. Not a bad run, but pretty easy course (actually, very easy with the exception of a couple controls in pits), and I didn't seem to be pushing hard enough or thinking clearly enough. Fourth by about 2 minutes.

orienteering 45:00 [1]

Walking on the training map with Gail. A zillion pits/depression, from when bombs were dropping (I kid you not).

Monday Jun 28, 2004 #

part trail, part road 32:00 [3]

Late day run, up the hillside a ways on a narrow paved road, back on some trails, climbed about 600 feet. Really pretty, went by the ruin of a fort, a relic of the battles in the region between Italy and Austria in the First Great War (as they call it over here).

orienteering 23:40 [5] 3.3 km (7:10 / km) +394ft 6:04 / km

Day 3, last day in Austria. Pretty good run. No mistakes, but lots of hesitation at two controls, probbaly standing still for 45-60 seconds. And on a short and pretty easy course, can't do that. Second for the day but something like 1:30 behind, comparing splits shows I was just getting outrun. Still, not bad.

hike 29:00 [1]

Hike up the ski hill (Gschwandtkopf, say that fast three times....) in the middle of the map with Randy, just for the hell of it after the orienteering.

trail running 11:00 [1]

Ran back down.

orienteering 24:17 [5] 3.25 km (7:28 / km) +295ft 6:34 / km
ahr:158 max:174

Day 2, short course (and a much more interesting/fun course than yesterday), real good run, first (out of about 75 in the class) by just over a minute! No mistakes, just a couple of weak moments where I needed a bit more willpower, but pretty much max effort the whole way.

orienteering 44:28 [4] 4.5 km (9:53 / km) +1050ft 7:17 / km
ahr:155

Day 1 of the Euregio 6 day. First 3 days are in Seefeld, Austria, near Innsbruck, where a bunch of events have benn held each time Innsbruck had the Winter Olympics.
Not a good run. Actually ok except for one bad control near the end, little teeny renentrant (only 1 contour) on a big hillside, which I think was higher than mapped. Lost 2-3 minutes. Overall 2nd when I left with most everyone in, but 5-6 minutes behind first (a Frenchman, always fast, now a better orienteer...), and just in front of Ivar Helgesen, a Norwegian who has made many base maps used in the U.S.
Course was advertised as 4.5 km, 150 meters climb. Seemed like they were having a 2-for-1 sale on contours -- I did 320 meters on good routes. Randy Hall is in H21E, advertised as 10 km and 450 meters. Wonder if he had 900 meters climb....
Maps won't get posted until I get home.

orienteering 1:00:00 [1]

Walking on a training map with Gail.

Wednesday Jun 23, 2004 #

trail running 28:00 [3]

Easy run in Landeck, Austria, to shake out the cobwebs before dinner. Incredibly beautfiul surroundings.

Monday Jun 21, 2004 #

biking 1:11:28 [2] 20.4 mi (3:30 / mi)

Old Derrfield/River Rd. loop, easy pace, a little harder last half.

Sunday Jun 20, 2004 #

trail running 1:58:54 [4] 13.5 mi (8:48 / mi) +2297ft 7:35 / mi
ahr:150 max:163

Mt. Greylock Trail Race. Good run. Good effort up (first 45 minutes is uphill), then steady pace the rest of the way, but trying not to do anything stupid. First 50+ on a perfect day for running.

Saturday Jun 19, 2004 #

biking 2:20:38 [2] 35.8 mi (3:56 / mi)

With Walter to Shutesbury, Wendell, Millers Falls. Easy pace, lots of chatter.

Friday Jun 18, 2004 #

trail running 13:08 [4] 0.8 mi (16:25 / mi) +820ft 8:20 / mi

Power line power climb up the other side of Mt. Toby. Did it three times last summer (13:31, 13:31, and 13:18), so this was ok.

trail running 28:46 [3]

Over to the start, back on a different route from the top.

Thursday Jun 17, 2004 #

biking 53:37 [2] 15.3 mi (3:30 / mi)

Leverett loop, easy pace. A warm muggy day and feeling tired from yesterday.

Wednesday Jun 16, 2004 #

trail running 1:55:25 [3] 9.2 mi (12:33 / mi) +2133ft 10:17 / mi

From Sherburne Pass in Vermont, a loop using the old Long Trail and the re-routed one. Rocky and rooty but not super hilly (as much of the Long Trail is), walked one steep section for about 4 minutes. Stumbling a bit at the end. Had spent the previous four hours on a very hilly golf course with Mike Fritz (discussing O' of course) and the legs were getting tired. Even so, my running was (much) better than my golf!
Have played almost no golf this year, but did manage a round on Monday on the course where the US Women's Open is being held in a couple of weeks, an old Donald Ross layout (Eric will know what that means). Good fun. So I have played as much this week as the rest of the year. But now the clubs go back in storage for a while.

Sunday Jun 13, 2004 #

biking 2:52:49 [3] 46.7 mi (3:42 / mi) +3445ft 3:28 / mi

Group ride from Shelburne Falls through the hilltowns (Hawley, Plainfield, Cummington, Chesterfield, Goshen, and Ashfield). Lots of hills, mix of hard and easy efforts. Pretty toasted by the end.

Saturday Jun 12, 2004 #

orienteering 58:23 [3] 5.35 km (10:55 / km) +919ft 8:39 / km

WCOC local meet at Five Ponds. Legs were tired, but put out decent effort. Hamstrings better, left one mostly ok, right one still a little sore but not bad. Routes/comments.

Friday Jun 11, 2004 #

biking 1:30:08 [3] 25.8 mi (3:30 / mi)

Shutesbury/Wyola loop, good steady effort.
Seem to have two new residents at the house -- a pair of black rat snakes, ... and from their behavior should one conclude that they are thinking of having kids? Gail thinks they are great, will help control the chipmunk and mouse population. I'm not so sure. Maybe we should ship them off to Boris and Greg for pets? Notice also our fine "lawn" which I spend hours slaving over.

Thursday Jun 10, 2004 #

biking 44:24 [3] 13.5 mi (3:17 / mi)

Short ride to Whately and S. Deefield, mostly flat, but a decent effort. Helped to put a little more air in the tires!

Wednesday Jun 9, 2004 #

trail running 1:10:39 [3] 8.2 mi (8:37 / mi)
ahr:150 max:168

Robert Frost loop on Mt. Toby. Hot and humid (90, dewpoint 66), feeling the heat. Both hamstrings still sore, certainly more sore than I had hoped.

Tuesday Jun 8, 2004 #

biking 2:07:10 [2] 34.3 mi (3:42 / mi)

From Greenfield, to Bernardston, Guilford (Vermont), Vernon (Vermont), and back over Huckle Hill. Legs feeling tired, very tired after I was done, maybe in part due to the heat (about 90) and a bit of dehydration. Hamstring a little better, but still sore enough to pass on running for another day.

Monday Jun 7, 2004 #

biking 1:09:25 [2] 20.35 mi (3:25 / mi)

Old Deerfield/River Road loop, pretty flat. Took it easy for the first half, right hamstring still pretty sore from Saturday's race, then working harder on the rolls on River Rd. into the wind.

Sunday Jun 6, 2004 #

orienteering 1:06:28 [3] 8.1 mi (8:12 / mi)

NEOC local meet at Gay City SP. Hamstrings sore from yesterday, especially thr right one (which has been chronically bad, but better the last month or so). A good steady effort, trying just to keep running, with only two weak spells. Routes/comments.
Overall, a good week.

Saturday Jun 5, 2004 #

trail running 1:10:58 [5] 8.3 mi (8:33 / mi) +1969ft 6:59 / mi
ahr:161 max:173

USATF-New England Mountain/Trail Champs at Northfield. One short loop low down, then twice up to the top and back. Ran pretty well. Surprised myself by only being 30 seconds slower on the second climb. Final trip down was moving well, picked off about half a dozen guys, but needed to get one more as it turned out -- first in 55-59 got me by 2 seconds. But got Phil by about 3 minutes to partially avenge two defeats earlier in the week.
Info on other trail races in New England.

biking 48:05 [3] 13.6 mi (3:32 / mi)

Whately and South Deerfield, mostly flat, just to stretch the legs. A little tired, but more energy than I thought I might have.

Thursday Jun 3, 2004 #

biking 1:54:56 [3] 30.1 mi (3:49 / mi)

Hilly loop to Shelburne/Conway, feeling tired.

Wednesday Jun 2, 2004 #

trail running 22:52 [5] 5.0 km (4:34 / km)
ahr:160 max:173

5K XC race in Forest Park in Springfield. Hillier/slower than the Northampton course, I hope, since the same effort was a minute and a half slower. Just the same for Phil, too...
Hadn't run the race for 20+ years, don't know what I used to run, but I think I remember that breaking 20 was hard. Best at Northampton was 18:32.

trail running 20:00 [3]

Warm up, cool down.

Tuesday Jun 1, 2004 #

trail running 21:24 [5] 5.0 km (4:17 / km)
ahr:164 max:171

Northampton 5K XC race. Time for more faster running, even though this seemed like a lot of effort for a slow time.

trail running 27:50 [3]

Warmup, cool down.
