Phil's Thanksgiving weekend meet, this time at Norwottuck instead of the usual Mt. Tom. And this time a straight score-O', choice of 75 or 120 minutes. Very nice event on a sunny somewhat cool day.

I opted for the 75 minutes, seemed more than enough. Got out to the ones in the SE corner, wasn't sure I'd get back in time, but that kept me moving and made it with just over a minute to spare. Good orienteering, no mistakes to speak of. Energy and coordination/agility were lacking, but not as bad as might have been.

Came close to doing some damage -- slipped at one point and landed with my mouth taking a direct hit on the top of a stump. A little lip damage, but not much, and no tooth damage, because the top of the stump was rotten wood. But I can't say I enjoyed the next few minutes trying to spit out all the rotten stuff -- I got quite a mouthful of it -- but that was a lot better than what might have been.

Good to get out.

My route.

1 PM

orienteering 2:07:44 intensity: (2:13 @1) + (1:10:53 @2) + (54:38 @3) 4.51 mi (28:19 / mi) +1345ft 22:05 / mi
ahr:128 max:144

Picking up controls (65-51-61-53-91-73-84-83-41-44-55-45-43). Outside of left ankle quite unhappy, especially when on a side slope with it the lower leg. Long walk, lots of micro route choice needed because the stakes protruded from my pack higher than my head.

My route.

ahr:142 max:164 shoes: saloman

At Mt. Tom, but not the usual one but the Mt. Tom in Connecticut, which I'd lived a few miles from growing up but never been up.

A brief warm-up, then up to the top, just made it without walking, then looked around a bit on top and a bit more on the way back down. Quite rocky, also quite pretty. Right foot (arch problem) is better, outside of left foot still a little unhappy.

Still spending a good bit of time at mom's. Seems like the right thing to do.

ahr:130 max:146 shoes: saloman

At Ratlum Mountain with Charlie and his cousin Matty. Nice to get out a little before Rhonda's feast, even if the pace was leisurely. About time to start doing a little more training, even though I'm pretty sure I can win the Superstars in my present decrepit condition, just relying on cunning, guile, and the home-court advantage.

A short outing on the trails at Five Ponds, legs definitely feeling like I haven't run for a couple of weeks. But I think the feet survived.

And an interesting day in Litchfield, mom have been resurrected, no longer looking like she was about to depart any day, now quite full of energy and back to her old self, a very fine day, but also back to her usual stubbornness and contrariness, so the care staff will have their work cut out for them. Looks like I'll probably be making trips here for a long time to come.

Note

Made another cake today, in honor of Dan's visit.

Had to use as inspiration an old Julia Childs show that I happened to see a long time ago, where the cake she was making had some sort of structural failure and one section was mostly missing. And her solution was just more frosting, much more frosting. I believe she said that more cream and butter and sugar could fix just about anything.

My structural failure was that the cake layers stuck to the pan, despite the fact that I had buttered them. So I had separation issue, and then reconstruction issues, and I managed pretty well. And with a little extra frosting, it now looks just perfect.

As I write this, the girls are doing a core workout, so even if I am not training, some training is being done in the house. That must count for something.

And then back to Litchfield in the morning, mom is fading fast, and I need to get a lesson in how to administer various narcotics. Feeling very stressed but so far the first priority is being adhered to -- she is home and she is being well taken care of.

Note

No training so far this week, the feet are a good bit better but not quite ready to run, resting up got the Traverse on Sunday.

Have made it out regularly to chase the little white ball, including today, lots of hills, plus the wind was whipping in the 20-30 mph range, made the game quite the lesson in being adaptable to the circumstances, about a 2 or 3 club wind. And I got in a little extra core workout, had to keep picking my bag up after the wind blew it over.

Had the place entirely to myself, such a pleasure, finished just as the sun was setting.

And then back to Litchfield, more steps along her journey, now she has a fine hospital bed and a wheelchair, and a ramp for the three interior steps is going in tomorrow. She is very frail. We never were close, but the inevitable is still sad to see.

And the nurses, as always, are great.

Note

Also baked a chocolate layer cake (from scratch) to take to Litchfield. I kid you not.

mountain biking 1:06:20 intensity: (4:08 @1) + (21:03 @2) + (38:15 @3) + (2:54 @4) 9.19 mi (7:13 / mi) +1043ft 6:31 / mi
ahr:132 max:153 weight:141lbs

Standard route at home, over to the gate, down to the river and back via Gunn Farm. No falls, got up all the hills OK, though a bit muddy by the time I finished, as there were still some wet spots from rain a few days ago.

I'm not sure what the etiquette is about at what point you should stay off the trails if they are wet so you don't damage them, but today seemed perhaps close to that point.

Found this old photo at my mom's house, from 1988 I think.

Note

I guess things just aren't supposed to be simple sometimes.

Got to my mom's house yesterday evening, all sorts of excitement, not with mom who is dozing quite comfortably on the couch and seems just the same as when I left a couple of days ago. But with the care staff. And the visiting nurses.

Because it seems one VNA nurse came in two days ago and determined mom's heart was failing and she was liable to croak in a few days and we should be getting oxygen on hand and not moving her any more than necessary, and all that got the care staff pretty concerned.

And then another VNA nurse came in yesterday and said she looked just fine, and she ought to be pushed to walk more. And neither VNA nurse was the one who is supposedly her primary nurse. And the care staff was basically saying, WTF?

Actually it would have been easier if they had just said WTF, and moved on, but instead lots of time spent/wasted trying to get everyone on the same page. Which would be easier if we knew what that page was, i.e. if we got a consistent message from the professionals at VNA.

So today I have to try to deal with them. And also still deal with the care staff, who have differing opinions about how to deal with mom when she doesn't want to do something (like eat, or get up, or....), how much you should or shouldn't push her to do things she doesn't want to do, but which maybe are good for her. Small issues, but sometimes not easy decisions, trying to find the right balance.

And I don't really need the aggravation, but I guess it comes with the territory.

Note

Had to stay in Litchfield for an after-lunch meeting with the VNA (hopefully we settle on a plan of care), but that left just enough time to sneak off for a quite hilly walk. Feet are slowly getting better. Beautiful day.

Stopped on my way to Litchfield to play at a course I used to play often with Charlie before he gave up the game. Nice afternoon, very much enjoyed it, had a bunch of good holes, played rogaine style, i.e. took the holes in whatever order worked best to avoid traffic, very nice, got around in 2:45. Missed shooting my age by 13 strokes, better than usual. I think that goal will be a tough one.

Aches and pains modestly better. Falling off the mountain bike a few times doesn't help. No O' this weekend, family gathering in Litchfield, but hopefully will be able to do the Traverse the following week. Note that I said "do" the Traverse, not "run" the Traverse.

mountain biking (night) 2:00:41 intensity: (34:17 @1) + (1:00:22 @2) + (22:23 @3) + (3:39 @4) 11.04 mi (10:56 / mi) +663ft 10:21 / mi
ahr:119 max:164 weight:141.5lbs

Night group ride on Montague plain and Willis Hill. Lots of stops to regroup (so the time is a bit bogus), a little too much for my taste, but then it is nice to have company in case things go wrong.

Still having trouble getting up the steeper parts, though getting better at unclipping. I guess getting lots of practice helps.

Feet were a good bit better when I started (a fast afternoon round of golf seemed to do some good), a little less good afterwards due to the stress of some hasty dismounts. But maybe the improvement is reason enough to enter the Traverse, with the hope of, even at a walk, securing one of the fine shirts for Gail.

Note

I don't think I'll be running for a little while. Right hell/arch hurts, plus I did something to the outside of my left foot about 1/3 of the way around yesterday's course, hurt the rest of the way, was keeping me awake some last night, and very sore this morning. I would have been better skipping yesterday's course, but then hindsight is always 20/20.

I'll have to get the bike out, see how that feels.

Controls: 302/800

Note

It's easiest to put all the links for the weekend's maps in one place --

Sprint (Green/Brown/Orange/M65) -- course, my route.
Middle (Red/M45) -- course, my route.
Long (Red/M45) -- course, my route.

I've got a nice bruised/swollen area on the outside of my left foot. Don't know what I did, though I remember doing it around #7 or 8 on Sunday, and one of those that don't go away after a minute or two.

Interesting heart rate graph for the run, looks like I'm not putting out after the river crossing. But in the rocks I just was feeling very very fragile.

This morning, out to buy some furniture (part of an effort to make my mom's house work better for the current situation, in this case the need was a comfortable chair for the health aide spending the night), went to 4 stores before we (me and the aide) found something suitable, that's a record for me, I never go to more than one. At one point passed an urgent health care center on one side of the road -- maybe they would look at (and x-ray?) my foot -- and a pharmacy offering flu shots without an appointment on the other. I opted for the one more likely to do me some good and got a flu shot.

Note

It is just speculation on my part, but there were two attempts today to set the world record for the worst time per kilometer on a single leg of an O' course. One was unsuccessful but very imaginative, the other a very solid effort, with an estimated kilometer time in the range of 150 to 175 minutes.

Details to follow.

Is there a way to search the AP split analysis archives to see if there has been anything worse?

Note

This was yesterday, end of the middle, coming uphill, when I had a least a little energy. Looking both excellent and quite fierce according to Gail. Photo by Eddie Bergeron, lots of others are here.

Red course (M45) at Hickory Run. Yesterday I got the better of the courses, today it got the better of me. Feet got progressively worse. OK for the first part on the easy and non-rocky stuff, but then the second half with lots of rocks and some laurel, well, I just couldn't handle it. Afraid to run much because of the feet, plus one really stupid route choice (though I'm guessing the better way would only have been a couple of minutes faster).

Just didn't have it.

Red course --
part 1.
part 2.
part 3.
part 4.

A little fuzzy just using the camera. I'll do proper scans when I get home tomorrow and add my route.

Very nice course again by Sandy. Quite different terrain before vs. after the river crossing. I lost 4 minutes to Ali up to 10, and then 10 minutes the rest of the way. Likewise with JJ, a minute up on him at 10, 3 minutes down overall. Maybe I ought to stick to the brown course.

ahr:159 max:169 shoes: x-talon 212 #2

Sprint at DVOA A meet at Hickory Run. M65 Green/Brown/Orange course, 2.0 km, 50 m climb.

My route. Orienteering well and ran well except for #4, a lapse in concentration, lost 30+ seconds. Rest was feet. Feet hurt but tolerable. Legs had some energy.

Nice course by Clem (I think), made good use of the area.

12 PM

orienteering 35:19 intensity: (2 @1) + (32 @2) + (26 @3) + (32:35 @4) + (1:44 @5) 2.63 mi (13:26 / mi) +430ft 11:38 / mi
ahr:159 max:174 shoes: x-talon 212 #2

Middle distance at DVOA A meet at Hickory Run. M45 Red course, 3.9 km, 110 m climb.

My route. Good run, orienteering well, but was a more tired and not moving as well.

Very nice area and very nice course by Sandy. Needed to be on your toes, and the excursion into the laurel for 7 and 8 was fine, added some variety. And I think people had problems there, even though the map seemed just fine to me.

Caught up to JJ at #7, and Ethan punched right after me. I didn't know when JJ started (turned out it was 10 minutes before me), and I thought Ethan had started 2 minutes before me. Beat them to 8, then got stuck in the laurel leaving 8. Saw JJ a number of times thereafter, but he was a little faster. Thought I'd seen the last of Ethen at 8, but then I was back up to him at 10. But then he just ran away from me, picked up more than 2 minutes on me from there to the finish.

The WOC stars (Sam and Ali) both had problems, Ali still got me by half a minute, but I tied Sam exactly. Not a really a scalp, but I'll call it a scalpette. Got to take what you can. And probably the last time I'll come anywhere close to her. I think she lost about 4 minutes on #7, whereas Ali just sort of dribbled time away in small chunks. Both are fast enough to run the course in 30, but it was demanding orienteering (visibility was often restricted) and easy to miss. A great test.

Note

Lots of things happening --

-- Post-run yesterday, walking to the grocery store from my car, all of a sudden my right heel/arch hurt. Been hurting all today. Very distressing.

-- On the other hand, the heels aren't hurting. These things balance out.

-- Monday the vibes seemed to be good for getting my mom in the hospice program. Yesterday her doctor, very much a cold fish, said he saw no reason to order such. Today a meeting with the hospice director and an examination of my mom by her, she thinks Jamie definitely should be in hospice. She (the hospice director) meets with the doc tomorrow, and she says she can be very persuasive. We shall see. It would help.

-- Got home for the night (and a fine dinner that I didn't have to cook myself), even managed to get in a little golf on the way home in the lingering daylight. Good for the soul.

-- And, for the first time in my life, got sued. Though that is not a bad thing in this case, nor unexpected, and in certain respects a good thing. May have to go to Las Vegas before long.

-- And I have gotten more use out of my cell phone in the last week than in all the previous years combined. Though I have not yet had to deal with texting....

Note

So this is how at least one part of the glorified world of small business works --

Every day I get on the phone for a while to get my mom off various mailing lists, plus cancel periodicals, because she can no longer read. Today I called New York magazine, got a pleasant person at customer service. Asked if I could cancel her subscription.

The problem was that they farm out the subscription operation, well, maybe not entirely, but in my mom's case the subscription renewals had been processed by (and the money paid to) a subscription service. Actually 3 such services over the years. So I would have to contact them.

She was kind enough to give me the three names and phone numbers. Before I hung up, I asked her how long my mom's subscription was good for. There was a pause while she looked it up, and then she said, "It goes until June of 2033."

I almost started laughing, except I'd already run into this with another magazine. I think they just keep calling up, and someone would ask if it was OK to renew her subscription, and she wouldn't understand a thing, but she's very polite so she would say yes. I've seen such calls here, she would hang up, I'd ask who it was, she'd have no idea. And then a bill would arrive, and she'd pay it.

The woman from New York was actually trying pretty hard, she gave me as best she could a rough breakdown of what part of the extra 23 years each of these three outfits was responsible for. So far I've gotten a hold of one of them, supposedly the prime offender. Yes they would cancel their share of the extra years, yes they would issue a refund, but it will take about 6-8 weeks to process.

We shall see.

O' practice at Five Ponds.

14 controls, course was 4.5 km, all woods (no trails). Mainly just trying to get a woods workout. No problem with the orienteering. My route (going clockwise). So I think I'm slowly running a little better.

Really need to warm up a little on the trail. Was stumbling a lot the first couple hundred meters until the joints started working.

256/800 (32% done, need to get at least another 100 before winter, will certainly help if I can make it to Hickory Run this weekend).
