Short ride just before dinner. Calf is loosening up, but not yet ready to run.

biking 40:30 [3] 10.53 mi (3:51 / mi) +283ft 3:45 / mi

First time out on the bike this year. Had to put a lot of air in the tires, but otherwise it seemed to work OK, the shifters shifted, the brakes braked.

Just a short outing, up to Montague. No falls. :-)

Note

Nice outing yesterday. Drove to Litchfield, picked up mom, then down to Southport to visit her brother Larry (7 years younger, half-brother actually). Stayed about an hour, then back to Litchfield. Jamie managed pretty well, certainly as well as could be hoped, interacted with Larry enough so that I'm pretty sure he really enjoyed it.

And a surprise to me was a little gift Larry had for her (it was her birthday, #97), a photo of Jamie and her mom at the train station in Munich in 1935. Never seen the photo before.

Stopped at McLeans on the way home, ran Charlie's loop. Overcast, not warm, bit of rain. Ran along at a nice pace, doing OK, getting up the ups OK, but then out of nowhere a twinge in my left calf. Didn't really feel like walking the last mile and a half, and it wasn't that bad, so ran in as gently as I could, but it will be hurting for a while. Bummer.

Guess it's time to get out the bike....

road running 17:49 [3] 1.7 mi (10:29 / mi) +450ft 8:23 / mi

Up (10:52) and down (6:57) South Sugarloaf. Better than I thought I would manage when I started.

Note

Quite the last couple of days on the national scene -- court rulings on Obamacare and gay marriage, plus what seems like movement to diminish the status of the Stars and Bars.

None of this really affects me directly. Or so I thought. Until I got to the last paragraph of the NY Times article on the service in Charleston and Obama's eulogy --

Andrew Weiner, 59, who is white, said, “White people have got to challenge it when someone says something racist in private. We have to start dealing with all this.”

I don't have to think very hard to remember various times in the past when someone has said something clearly and distinctly racist, and I have kept my mouth shut. Because it wasn't worth making a scene. Because it wouldn't do any good. Because I had to deal with this person in one way or another (the usual circumstances being either town politics or in my tax business.). Because it was easier to just shut up.

None of those reasons are any good.

Time to change my game.

Easy to say, of course. It will be interesting to see if anything really changes. I know I will be tested.

Really nice run with Phil at Earl's Trails, did his loop, just under an hour. Steady pace, never feeling really bad but also certainly not loafing. Not so bad, for both of us! :-)

And it bears saying that it is so nice to have good company. He's been a friend ever since he came to the valley (25 years ago?). He's smart, interesting, amusing, always game for whatever insane adventure is proposed. I'm not sure how long either of us can keep doing this stuff, but for as long as it lasts, it's definitely worth treasuring.

One fall. I really have to start picking my feet up more, I clipped rocks or roots maybe 20 times, one other near fall. Glad I had my gloves on.

WCOC summer meeting at Ratlum Mt.

Warm-up for sprint A. Was OK as long as it was flat or down.

orienteering 18:59 [3] 1.19 mi (15:57 / mi) +155ft 14:12 / mi
shoes: x-talon 212 #2

Cool down after Sprint B. Sprint B, by the way, was the best ever sprint course at Ratlum, by far.

Didn't have any gear other than slow. As expected. :-)

And then a fine party hosted by Charlie and Rhonda. Good company, good food, good vibes. And even a couple of folks under 60.

Note

No Boston sprint camp this weekend, in Denver for wedding of Charlie and Rhonda's daughter Jessica, plus the extra benefit of a visit with Kissy.

So of course we were all decked out in our finest --

And even Zack was decked out, having just procured his first suit ever --

The groom's family is Jewish, so a Jewish wedding it was, and quite a fine production. The rabbi had brought his A game. The whole scene was pretty cool.

Jess is an amazing young woman. Zack is growing into a fine young man. The parents have done their job well.

Really glad we went. Weddings can be wonderful things. The vibes this time were as good as you could imagine. We have known C and R and their family for a long time, and it was a joy to witness the end of one chapter of their lives, and the start of another.

And we'll just say nothing about some of the shenanigans that were taking place as the evening wore on. :-)

A new member (as of yesterday) of Kissy's household, Shiva --

Note

Played at Fossil Trace this morning. Fine place, lots of fun. At some point it occurred to me that, to reduce a couple of my regular activities to their essence, when I run I feel old (sluggish, no zip), whereas when I play golf I feel young (still a good bit of zip in the swing). Which may have a lot to do with why I am enjoying the latter so much.

road running 25:45 [3] 2.87 mi (8:58 / mi) +13ft 8:56 / mi

Once more around Washington Park, not quite as much a struggle as the last couple of days. Getting a little used to the thinner air?

Another loop around Washington Park, lovely afternoon.

road running 25:20 [3] 2.87 mi (8:50 / mi) +12ft 8:48 / mi
weight:136lbs shoes: pegasus 4

Over to Washington Park and a loop around on the gravel path. Ran with somewhat of a sense of urgency as there were all sorts of ominous looking clouds around and the wind was gusting, but nothing ever happened. Not that I was complaining.

A little bit of soreness from Ascutney yesterday, but the greater concern was how much effort it takes to break 9 minutes for a mile. New threshold for "tempo" pace?

road running 32:35 [3] 2.16 mi (15:04 / mi) +1428ft 9:16 / mi
weight:136.5lbs shoes: pegasus 4

Headed up Ascutney with the intention of going to the end of the road, mix of run and walk, but the running gradually got more difficult and after a couple of miles I thought, hmm, maybe I should just stop here. Took only a few seconds to decide to do exactly that.

road running 18:09 [3] 2.14 mi (8:29 / mi)
shoes: pegasus 4

And back down, often just off to the side of the road to lessen the pounding.

Not what I'd expected for the outing, but better than nothing.

trail running 24:26 [2] 2.09 mi (11:40 / mi) +165ft 10:51 / mi
shoes: pegasus 4

Short run checking out the trails north of Keats Road, not much. Didn't have much zip, nor much ambition.

The latest senior moment -- standing at the entrance to Stop & Shop, calling Gail to see if she needed anything, meanwhile checking as I always do that I have the three essentials (keys, wallet, phone), a moment of panic as I can't find the phone. It is far longer than I might wish until I realize I am talking on it.

trail running 36:27 [3] 3.02 mi (12:04 / mi) +727ft 9:49 / mi
weight:135.5lbs shoes: pegasus 4

Outer loop at North Sugarloaf, going up the north side. Not sure if I've run this way before. Didn't quite make it, walked once for 30 seconds, then saw I was just about up the steep part, could have run it if I'd tried. But still pleased that I trudged up as well as I did.

Beautiful afternoon, 70, low humidity. And beautiful morning on the golf course, 76.

trail running 39:27 [3] 3.29 mi (12:00 / mi) +680ft 10:02 / mi
weight:135.5lbs shoes: pegasus 4

Nice late afternoon run on North Sugarloaf. Made it up the steady climb on the outer loop without being tempted to walk, so my condition certainly could be worse.. :-)

Maybe try a bigger hill sometime in the next 7-10 days?

6 PM

trail running 34:28 [3] 2.82 mi (12:14 / mi) +248ft 11:18 / mi
shoes: pegasus 4

Late afternoon run at Earl's Trails, down a bit and then up a bit. Felt better than I expected, having just finished a round at the Ledges, lugging the clubs. But the plan was for a run, and a run it was.

No falls but a few close calls.

And I think I have a flat in one of my Pegasus shoes, as it is squeaking. Probably time for a replacement anyway, 500+ miles in them plus a lot more walking.

trail running 13:34 [2] 1.45 mi (9:21 / mi) +101ft 8:47 / mi

Seemed like a good idea to go to the Northampton XC race, held every Tuesday evening from April to September, to see where my fitness was at. Can't hide from the truth as you can on an O' course.

Warm-up around the inner loop of the course.

trail running race 24:37 [4] 5.0 km (4:55 / km) +198ft 4:39 / km
shoes: pegasus 4

Cool evening, perfect running conditions, legs seemed to feel pretty good, put out a decent effort, picked it up at the end -- in other words, all the ingredients for a record -- and a record it was, worst time ever on the course. Well, at least I'm still trying... :-)

And it certainly tells the truth, that being that my training hasn't been much, and it's been totally lacking at any faster efforts, which is maybe why a 7:45 mile felt like I was just flying. Everything's relative.

But glad I went, for the message received, also saw a few friendly faces and that is always nice.

trail running 17:22 [2] 1.75 mi (9:56 / mi) +95ft 9:26 / mi
shoes: pegasus 4

And a final bit, around the outer loop. Legs felt surprisingly good for a few minutes and then poof...
