hike with Gail 35:08 [1] 2.01 mi (17:29 / mi) +180ft 16:07 / mi

Another very windy day, so back to the Mount toby jeep trail.

2 PM

orienteering 56:09 intensity: (14 @1) + (3:04 @2) + (51:25 @3) + (1:26 @4) 2.99 mi (18:47 / mi) +721ft 15:17 / mi

At Norwottuck, course set by Will Daniels for some spring training. Very nice, brightly colored control flags, all in the right place. Thanks, Will!

Charlie sent me a note saying he was coming for a second try at the course, did I want to meet up. Seemed like a fine idea. I suggested he go first, then I'd wait 5 minutes or so before I went. He scoffed at the 5 minutes, so we bargained it to 10 to 15, and I ended up starting 15 minutes after him. Not a sign of him in the woods, not sure if that was a good sign or bad, but when I got back his car door was open, and he was all changed. Turns out 5 minutes would have been just right.

Super windy at the Notch, so we both hopped in my car for shelter, and then chatted for quite a long time. What a nice afternoon. Which even included my orienteering. Not particularly speedy, but it's hilly and the woods are a little trashy and I was being careful, so still very satisfactory. And, once again, so glad to be out doing it.

And a note on strategy -- it's an old map, so I figured there was no reason to assume that dark green was still dark green. Got lucky from 5 to 6 when it was just scattered bits of laurel. No such luck crossing the power line from 9 to 10. Some you win, some you lose.

ahr:140 max:151 weight:140lbs

North Sugarloaf. Walked up with bits of running whenever it flattened a bit, ran down (including all but one of the little ups). Not so bad. Really concentrating hard on picking up my feet and then putting them down exactly where I wanted. No falls or even stumbles. :-)

Got home after a nice ride down to and back from a HVO meet at James Baird SP. Unpacked my stuff, everything where I expected except I couldn't find my Garmin. Back to the car, looked everywhere, no Garmin. Looked through my dirty clothes again. Still no Garmin. Imagining it still lying in the parking lot.

Went up to report my dismay to Gail? Are you still wearing it, she asked.

It is so nice to have a smart wife. She is having to adjust to having a stupider husband as he gets older. But I was so happy to have found the gizmo that all I could say was, It's not so bad to be really easy to please.

Still smiling about that (what's the point of been distressed about one's vanishing mind?). And still smiling about a fine day.

Never been to James Baird before. Really nice. Open woods, interesting topography, not particularly rocky, excellent map. And another chance to actually socialize. Even to extent of when Tony Muffati passed me midway through the course it seemed totally appropriate to ask he he'd been managing during the pandemic. And when he passed me a few minutes later, to ask how Karen had been managing. You didn't ask about the kids, he said afterwards. You didn't pass me a third time. :-)

Green course, 4.9 km beeline. Got around OK, a little over 11 minutes/km. One botch, misinterpreted the contours, had me totally confused for a couple of minutes, lucky to find the control. Still really weak on the uphills, but the running is getting better when it is flat or down. Mainly just happy to be doing it.

Loop to the south around Mount Warner, done just before the rain came. Nice outing, though also one where the wind shifts (south when I started, northwest when I finished) were not in my favor. I wasn't in a hurry, so it mostly didn't matter, just missed the always nice feeling of the wind at my back.

ahr:140 max:151 weight:141lbs

Pine Nook Road. Wanted to see if I could run all the ups without working too hard, and it seemed I couldn't, so about half a dozen short walking breaks. That's OK, still a good bit better than a month ago.

2 PM

hike with Gail 36:55 [1] 2.23 mi (16:33 / mi) +18ft 16:26 / mi
weight:140.5lbs

North Silver Lane.

Had about 3" of wet snow yesterday, and though a good bit of it was still around in the morning, by the time we got out it was pretty much gone.

But when we started out, I mentioned something about whether "Easter Island" would be back. Easter Island was a snowman, really just the head, huge, appeared at a spot about a quarter-mile down the road from where we started. It was really cool. But as winter turned into late winter into early spring, it slowly but eventually totally meted away. Never did manage a photo.

What a pleasure then to come around a corner and there was Easter Island 2. It was only about half the size of Easter Island, seriously, probably 3/4 of the height but only half the bulk, but the setting, green grass with just traces of snow remaining, was just wonderful.

There was a woman coming back to the house on the left from a walk in the woods with her dog. I celled over -- did you do this, pointing to EI2? No, she called, they did it, pointing to the house on the right. She also thought it was wonderful.

Took our photos, started to walk off, and out of the house on the right came a boy and his mom, the boy maybe 10 to 12. A nice chat with them. The boy had done it with his dad. Built up a huge mass of snow and then started carving. Told them how much we loved it. Big smiles all around.

Don't know how long it will last, but it sure is fine.

Note

Back to the guy who did my eye surgery for a three-month check-up. A good report. Pressure is where it has been for years (19), retina looked good. The eye, correctable with glasses to 20/60 before, now is 20/30. That's what the good eye measures at, though it's still better. But the bad eye is not nearly so far behind.

He's very happy with things. And I am too, though there's always a hope that it could get better. But even at this point, my overall vision is better -- I have depth perception again (when I'm driving it seems like I'm seeing a lot better), and I've pretty much gotten rid of the severe double vision when I using my laptop. Both are really good things.

He said I should come back in a year, just to check. And I should get my glasses prescription checked, a change might be called for. So that's next on the agenda.

8 AM

road running 29:31 intensity: (17 @1) + (3:06 @2) + (19:00 @3) + (7:08 @4) 3.01 mi (9:48 / mi) +168ft 9:19 / mi
ahr:143 max:156 weight:140.5lbs shoes: pegasus 2020

Loop starting on Heminway Road. Meant to do this yesterday but didn't feel like I had much energy, so put it off. Much better today. And got out before the rain. And ran the whole thing without really struggling. A lot better than five weeks ago. :-)

LiveLox for yesterday at Nobscot. First time I've used it, very nice.

orienteering 55:42 intensity: (42 @1) + (27 @2) + (52:17 @3) + (2:16 @4) 3.62 mi (15:22 / mi) +549ft 13:27 / mi
ahr:143 max:159 weight:140lbs shoes: rocklite 275

Orienteering at Nobscot. I first went orienteering there in 1975 and have been back quite a few times over the years. It always seemed to be the most fun place to orienteer, by a long shot, of anyplace in the eastern part of the state. And today it lived up to its reputation.

Green course, 4.9 km beeline. My navigating was adequate, my movement (the usual mix of run and walk) seemed excellent. Zero complaints.

A nice visit with JJ and Nancy in the parking lot, both before and after. And a totally pleasant ride out and back with Phil. We've both been double-shotted for a while, so it seemed like at some point you need to get on with life and start doing things. Without, hopefully, doing anything foolish.

A loop through South Deerfield and Old Deerfield. Sunny, low 70s, S breeze. Had it in my face the last 8 miles, so put out more effort to keep the pace about the same. Will probably feel it tomorrow.

biking - dark blue bike 2:07:19 intensity: (1:15 @1) + (38:52 @2) + (1:26:53 @3) + (12 @4) + (7 @5) 30.22 mi (4:13 / mi) +1032ft 4:05 / mi
ahr:134 max:156 weight:141lbs

Phil suggested a two-hour ride at a social pace, and I was game, though certainly not trained. But he was kind enough to get a flat at about 80 minutes, so there was a nice long rest at that point while a real professional changed a tire. So what if the things he's really good at don't include changing a bike tire. It was sunny, it was pleasant, it wasn't my bike. :-)

Thirty miles was more than enough, but fortunately the pace was not too demanding. Perhaps more demanding for Phil, could he really go that slow for two hours? Turns out he could.

Nice route, says the one who chose it. Many of my favorite spots, back roads with little or no traffic and gentle hills. Cave Hill was the one exception, but I put it in a low enough gear and eventually the top arrived. I suppose it helped that I was distracted by two guys who came riding past me, side by side, chatting away. Nothing remarkable, except I could hear them when they were still a quarter-mile behind. They were just really loud. Gail sometimes suggests that I am talking too loudly, but I was way out of these guys' league. But going up a hill, generally any distraction is a good thing.

I suppose I need to start doing more riding to get a bit of conditioning. But I'm in no hurry. I'm doing a pretty heavy workload of run/walks right now and don't want to overdo things. :-)
