trail running 13:48 [2] 1.7 mi (8:07 / mi)

Warm-up

trail running 19:59 [5] 3.1 mi (6:27 / mi)

Hard effort to break 20 at Northampton 5K XC, but unfortunately new part (lower inside) of hamstring really hurting afterwards. Looks like a few days off...

Sunday May 27, 2001 #

trail running 3:26:07 [3] 20.0 mi (10:18 / mi)

M&M Trail from the Notch east then north to Amathyst Brook. Roughly 20 miles, 3300' climb. Not feeling great (but better than Phil, at least for the last hour). Not raining as it has all week, but everything soaking wet, us included. Training run for Nipmuck marathon in 2 weeks.

Saturday May 26, 2001 #

trail running 1:06:51 [3] 8.2 mi (8:09 / mi)

RF loop on Mt. Toby. Felt pretty good.

Thursday May 24, 2001 #

track 28:01 [1] 3.25 mi (8:37 / mi)

Warm-up/down.

track 20:35 [4] 2.75 mi (7:29 / mi)

6 x (400 @82 average, 400 very slow). Legs felt better.

Wednesday May 23, 2001 #

trail running 1:11:31 [4] 8.5 mi (8:25 / mi)

Bull Hill - Greene Swamp loop with Steve Snover (a much better runner; I'm working hard, he's coasting). Steady rain. Saw a moose, second one of the day (or same one?), saw one an hour earlier in the field across the road.

Monday May 21, 2001 #

trail running 48:08 [3] 5.5 mi (8:45 / mi)

Sunday May 20, 2001 #

trail running 2:02:39 [4] 14.5 mi (8:28 / mi)

Soapstone Mt. trail race, 14.5 miles more or less. Didn't feel great, didn't feel awful, worked pretty hard. Best time 1:41. Talked Jeff Saeger into coming, so he beat me by about a minute for first over 50. Live and learn...
Too bad some of our speedy youngsters don't try races like this from time to time. I'd be curious what they could do. Race listings are at http://newenglandtrailrunner.com/

Friday May 18, 2001 #

trail running 1:11:21 [2] 8.2 mi (8:42 / mi)

Mt. Toby race course to gate and back. Relaxed pace, no falls! Soapstone on Sunday....

Wednesday May 16, 2001 #

trail running 1:12:26 [4] 8.5 mi (8:31 / mi)

Bull Hill/Greene Swamp loop with Phil. Pretty hard effort. One solid face plant on the way back drew blood in several places. The joys of trail running....

Tuesday May 15, 2001 #

trail running 22:21 [3] 2.9 mi (7:42 / mi)

Warm-up/down.

trail running 20:14 [5] 3.1 mi (6:32 / mi)

XC race in Northampton. Good effort, legs had a little life in them. Good evening for running, upper 50s.

Monday May 14, 2001 #

trail running 1:09:57 [3] 8.2 mi (8:32 / mi)

RF loop.

Sunday May 13, 2001 #

trail running 10:00 [1] 1.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

Warm-up.

orienteering 43:08 [4] 5.4 km (7:59 / km)

Couldn't get moving, seemed to be going in slow motion most of the time. Still hesitating too much. Orienteering fine (mistakes <30 seconds), but will power definitely lacking.

Comment -- a very nice weekend produced by CNYO. Technical stuff (map, terrain, courses) was fine. Logistics/organization (very compact start/finish/parking, speedy results, prompt awards, friendly organizers) were outstanding.

Saturday May 12, 2001 #

trail running 10:00 [1] 1.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

Warm-up.

orienteering 43:28 [4] 5.8 km (7:30 / km)

Day 1, US Champs. OK (ie. good movement) in places, too much hesitation in others. Reasonably good effort physically. No mistakes.

Wednesday May 9, 2001 #

trail running 1:08:25 [3] 8.2 mi (8:21 / mi)

RF loop, good effort on a warm day (low 80s).

Tuesday May 8, 2001 #

track 23:52 [2] 3.0 mi (7:57 / mi)

Warm-up/down

track 22:46 [4] 3.1 mi (7:21 / mi)

3 x (800@2:59, 400 very slow, 200@37, 400 very slow). Legs moving a little better than expected.

Monday May 7, 2001 #

trail running 30:24 [3] 3.5 mi (8:41 / mi)

Sunday May 6, 2001 #

trail running 2:20:23 [5] 12.0 mi (11:42 / mi)

Seven Sisters race, 28th/230, 1st 50+, best time 1:51. Good effort, right on goal. Ran the race in 2:09 ten years ago, which gives a measure of the deterioration in a decade! Nice day, 50s (as it was then).

Saturday May 5, 2001 #

Note

Three days of rest prior to 7 sisters tomorrow.

Wednesday May 2, 2001 #

trail running 1:24:08 [3] 6.5 mi (12:57 / mi)

Seven Sisters course to the third sister (a little past half way) and back (2800' climb). Hot (93 at the start), legs felt like jello. Had planned to go farther but cut it short.

Tuesday May 1, 2001 #

trail running 21:50 [3] 2.7 mi (8:05 / mi)

Warm-up/down.

trail running 20:28 [5] 3.1 mi (6:36 / mi)

XC race in Northampton (a weekly event, every Tuesday evening from April to October). A couple of decent hills. A little quicker than I expected, given the warmth (80s).
