Tuesday Jul 31 |
 | orienteering 37:59 [5]4.6 mi (8:15 / mi) | |
| |
| Day 3, Italy again. First (at last!), by about 40 seconds. A very good run until the end, when I bobbled away the better part of a minute. Lots of trails, few rocks, again (my kind of terrain?). |
Monday Jul 30 |
 | orienteering 30:30 [5]3.9 km (7:49 / km) | |
| |
| Day 2, in Italy. 2nd, by about 30 seconds. Lots of trails, no rocks. Ran well (including up all the hills, which is usually my problem). A few little diversions added up to about a minute lost. Very hot again (95 degrees). |
Sunday Jul 29 |
 | orienteering 31:38 [5]3 km (10:33 / km) | |
| |
| Day 1 of the Swiss/Italian 6 Day (5 best days to count). 7th, about 2 minutes behind. Very steep and rocky. A missed opportunity (should have won). Missed a couple minutes early, then ran really well, then missed a couple more minutes at the end. Don't know where my brain was.... |
Friday Jul 27 |
 | orienteering 40:40 [5]5.5 mi (7:24 / mi) | |
| |
| Day 5, chase start, started 9th, finished 8th, 4th best time on day. Much better, a good sense of movement (except on the last 10 minutes when I was getting tired) and no trouble with the controls. Overall, not a bad week, no real disasters and I was pleased with the final placing, but my orienteering recently seems to have lost a little something. But then the terrain was not easy... |
Thursday Jul 26 |
 | orienteering 32:28 [4]4 km (8:07 / km) | |
| |
| Day 4, abouth 15th? Mostly OK, but couldn't seem to get moving, combination of too much hesitation and not pushing enough. Getting a bit frustrated.... |
Tuesday Jul 24 |
 | orienteering 45:05 [5]5.6 km (8:03 / km) | |
| |
| Day 3, 14th. A bummer. Had a late start, therefore a day to do well (the course gets faster with lots of beaten tracks), but blew the first control, 3 or 4 minutes worth. Ran hard and well thereafter. Another hot day, as it was all week. |
Monday Jul 23 |
 | orienteering 53:53 [5]6.1 km (8:50 / km) | |
| |
| Day 2, 11th. Very technical terrain (you definited did not want to lose map contact). 3 minutes errors? Stopped a lot, plus low energy (first time on the trip the legs weren't there). Seemed to be low on confidence regarding the orienteering, which is unusual for me. |
Sunday Jul 22 |
 | orienteering 43:21 [4]5.2 km (8:20 / km) | |
| |
| Day 1, 18th of about 70 in the hardest (of 4) M55 classes. Missed 2-3 minutes, ran OK but not great. |
Saturday Jul 21 |
 | orienteering 25:00 [1]1.0 mi (24:59 / mi) | |
| |
| Walking on a training map in Sweden. 5-days was NW of Stockholm, just south of Uppsala. Very tough orienteering most of the week (lots and lots of smalls knolls and marshes, few big features). |
Friday Jul 20 |
 | orienteering 44:15 [5]4.4 km (10:03 / km) | |
| |
| Day 5, 2nd, 2nd overall. OK, but too slow in the complicated areas.
Overall, not a bad week. My legs felt good, but my orienteering seemed a little suspect. No big problems, just not as efficient as I would like. Wouldn't have won anyway. A Frenchman was first and beat me handily. |
Thursday Jul 19 |
 | trail running 5:00 [1]0.5 mi (10:00 / mi) | |
| |
| warm-up |
 | orienteering 51:50 [5]5.7 km (9:06 / km) | |
| |
| Day 4, 4th. Hit all the controls, one bad route. Wet, incredibly slippery, should have worn spikes (would have saved a couple of minutes). Bought some afterwards.... |
Wednesday Jul 18 |
 | trail running 5:00 [1]0.5 mi (10:00 / mi) | |
| |
| warm-up |
 | orienteering 1:03:15 [5]6 km (10:32 / km) | |
| |
| Day 3, 3rd. Several bad controls, maybe 5-6 minutes lost. Very hard course in places, very rocky, raining, slippery... Most everyone had troubles. |
Tuesday Jul 17 |
 | trail running 10 [1]1.0 mi (9 / mi) | |
| |
| warm-up |
 | orienteering 39:58 [5]4.7 km (8:30 / km) | |
| |
| Day 2, 4th. Blew a couple of minutes on the first control (vague terrain, high ferms), then ran hard and well. |
Monday Jul 16 |
 | orienteering 51:55 [4]5.7 km (9:06 / km) | |
| |
| Day 1 of French 5 Day. 2nd by 10 seconds. Pretty good, but didn't really work hard enough. |
Sunday Jul 15 |
 | orienteering 45 [1]1.5 mi (30 / mi) | |
| |
| On training map, almost all walking. |
Saturday Jul 14 |
 | orienteering 31:14 [2]3.0 mi (10:24 / mi) | |
| |
| On training map in Fontainebleau, France, just before dark. Stayed mostly on trails. |
Thursday Jul 12 |
 | Note | |
| |
| Taken a couple of days off to rest up. Off to Europe today (French 5-day first). Will report back here if I get access to a computer(??) |
Monday Jul 9 |

Friday Jul 6 |
 | trail running 1:00:31 [4]7.2 mi (8:23 / mi) | |
| |
| To top of Toby with Phil, up direct route, back via S-curves and power line. Pushed the pace the last 15 minutes. Nice day, low humidity, no flies. |
Thursday Jul 5 |
 | trail running 12:35 [3]1.5 mi (8:23 / mi) | |
| |
| Warm-up |
 | trail running 20:04 [4]3.1 mi (6:27 / mi) | |
| |
| Evening XC race around the reservoir in Holyoke (actually almost entirely flat cinder/dirt roads). Good training effort without overdoing it. Mid 70s, humid. |
Tuesday Jul 3 |
 | trail running 2:24:06 [3]11.0 mi (13:05 / mi) | |
| |
| Another 18 holes in the morning, then an outing on the Long Trail in the afternoon on the south side of Mt. Mansfield. About 3000' climb. Crappier trail than yesterday (but just normal for the Long Trail). Not as cool (60s?), but still very pleasant.
Legs felt surprisingly strong on the hills although I was starting to fade in the last 10-15 minutes. Had only had a food bar to eat since 6 am and was probably low on fuel. (First stop on the way home was for a really greasy slice of pizza and a really large Coke, which tasted really, really good.)
Amazing what a difference the cool weather makes.... |
Monday Jul 2 |
 | trail running 1:11:58 [3]5.8 mi (12:25 / mi) | |
| |
| Took a trip up to Vermont to play golf (don't consider it cross-training for O' -- if I was training for an ultra or a rogaine, then it would be) with Mike Fritz. Left early to get in a trip up Okemo Mt. in Ludlow before we played.
1900' climb, trail pretty good first 2/3, rocky/rooty last 1/3. A good effort going up (42:38), although walking the steeper sections of course. Took it easy coming down as I was by myself and didn't want to do anything stupid.
Nicest thing was the weather -- COLD. Probably low 40s at the top and the wind was howling. Went up the old fire tower to get the view and could only stay up there for about a minute cause I was freezing and also somewhat concerned about being blown off!. Too bad. The visibility was fantastic, probably 60-75 miles.
Oh yeah -- not a fly to be seen! |
Sunday Jul 1 |
 | trail running 48:08 [3]5.3 mi (9:05 / mi) | |
| |
| Exploring other (unmapped) trails on Pocumtuck Ridge -- left my USGS map at home by mistake, so it was a good terrain memory exercise to figure out where I'd been. Still hot, humid, and lots of flies.
