| biking 1:23:17 [3] | ||
| Greenfield, Turners Falls. Cold (low 40s) and windy. Could tell I haven't been biking much recently (tired legs, sore butt). | ||
Monday Oct 28 | ||
| Note | ||
| Travel back from Austin. Watched a couple of soccer games, Texas beat Kansas and Missouri. A lot of fun. My brother's kid is good, a lot of nerve. | ||

| Day 1 Red course from the Troll Cup. Leaves about 20% fallen, forest quite wet and a few patches of snow left over from last night's storm. Pretty good effort.
Splits: 3:34, 2:41, 4:34, 6:07 (went down one spur to far to the right), 17:03, 1:27, 7:42, 3:27, 3:37, 3:30, 3:13, 6:54, 3:20, 1:17, 1:15, total 1:09:43. (Splits from the meet.) My route.
| Note | ||
| Off to Austin tomorrow to visit my brother and watch a couple Univ. of Texas soccer games (his daughter is goalie, team is ranked #4 in the country). | ||
Monday Oct 21 | ||
| biking 1:20:00 [3] | ||
| Greenfield/Turners Falls. Legs tired and sore (took one header on Sunday and banged up a knee). Biking was ok, wouldn't have gotten out the door for a run. | ||
Sunday Oct 20 | ||
| trail running 10:00 [2]1.0 mi (10:00 / mi) | ||
| Warm-up. | ||
| orienteering 58:05 [4]6.7 km (8:40 / km) +300m 7:05 / km | ||

Tuesday Oct 15 | ||
| trail running 22:58 [2]2.5 mi (9:12 / mi) | ||
| Trying to work out the soreness in my quads, getting better. | ||
Sunday Oct 13 | ||
| trail running 54:35 [4]5.0 mi (10:55 / mi) | ||
| Monroe trail race supposed to be 10.5 mi, probably less. First half is mostly up (net gain 1800'), second half down on a different route.
A strange day. Within 5 minutes my left quad started hurting a little. It felt better climbing, and I felt good climbing, but on one short descent halfway up, the quad was complaining seriously. But then more climbing and it and I felt fine. Reached the top just behind Jeff Saeger, started zipping down to go by hime, and in the course of about 200 meters the leg went from a little sore, to very sore but I can live with this, to I can barely walk, let alone run.
| trail running 35:22 [1]1.5 mi (23:34 / mi) | ||
| Part 2: Really painful just standing there. And it's 50 and raining and, well, I'm not really happy about the prospects of getting off the mountain. A very awkward hoppity-hop, trying to keep moving enough to stay warm. On the flat places it would loosen up a bit and I could jog/shuffle, on the steep pitches it was all I could do to get down. | ||
| trail running 40:03 [2]3.0 mi (13:21 / mi) | ||
| Got to the next aid station, didn't feel like waiting for an hour for a ride, kept shuffling. A couple of nice uphills that I could relax on some and run pretty hard (and get warm), a few more good downs that froze it up again, and then a bunch of gentle flats for more shuffling.
A real bummer, seeing as how good I felt on the uphill. Hopefully it's not to be a recurring thing.
Thursday Oct 10 | ||
| trail running 5:00 [2]0.5 mi (10:00 / mi) | ||
| Jog out to start. | ||
| orienteering 52:45 [4]5.2 km (10:09 / km) +270m 8:03 / km | ||
| Ran day 2 GreenY course from the Troll cup. No flags out, of course, but I'd been to all the points and knew if I was in the right place or not. A pretty good run, actually. Legs felt really tired after bike ride yesterday afternoon, but managed to run more uphills than I've been doing recently. Splits: 2:28, 2:18, 2:02, 7:45, 3:18, 1:12, 7:02, 3:06, 4:50, 5:54, 5:17, 6:31, 1:00 = 52:45.
Map may not be perfect, but it is plenty good enough. My routes.
Wednesday Oct 9 | ||
| biking 2:01:48 [3] | ||
| Wyola, Wendell, Millers Falls, about 35 miles. | ||
Monday Oct 7 | ||
| biking 1:15:44 [3] | ||
| Greenfield and back, good effort though legs felt tired. 22.8 miles. | ||
Sunday Oct 6 | ||
| orienteering 37:48 [5]4.95 km (7:38 / km) | ||
| Green course at Gay City State Park in Connecticut. My routes. | ||
Green - Splits | ||
Friday Oct 4 | ||
| biking 1:36:11 [3] | ||
| To Lake Wyola and Shutesbury, good effort. Just got home before it rained. | ||
Wednesday Oct 2 | ||
| orienteering 3:00:00 [1] | ||
| Picking up the last of the controls on a warm and humid morning. Just a long walk, glad to be done. Got pretty tired of this by the end, but I suppose if we didn't take turns doing it, we wouldn't have any orienteering at all. | ||
Tuesday Oct 1 | ||
| biking 37:18 [2] | ||
| To Turners Falls for monthly SHINE meeting (a group I do volunteer work for counseling seniors about health insurance and Medicare). Relaxed pace so as not to work up too much of a sweat. Gentle tailwind. | ||
| biking 54:13 [3] | ||
| A couple of hours later, over to Greenfield for an errand, then back home into a stiffening headwind. Worked harder than I planned. Legs didn't have much zip. | ||
