Thursday Jul 31

Note
Don't normally enter my golf as "training", and I'm not playing much anyway, but today was a fine 73 with 5 birdies. So what if it was an easy course.... and every once in a while all the bounces are good ones.

Wednesday Jul 30

trail running 6:22 [3]0.75 mi (8:28 / mi)
Similar to Monday, over to the start of the climb...
trail running 13:30 [4]0.8 mi (16:52 / mi) +250m 5:19 / km
Up to the top, ran a little more....
trail running 23:24 [3]3.0 mi (7:48 / mi)
Back via parts of the Robert Frost. Overall, a good outing, calf hanging in there....
biking 42:10 [2]10.1 mi (4:11 / mi) +230m 2:25 / km
Just before dinner, relaxed pace except for climb up S. Sugarloaf. Climb is a good test, but can't really enjoy coming down, have to be on the brakes pretty hard all the way because of a couple of sharp curves and a stop sign at the bottom.

Tuesday Jul 29

biking 1:51:07 [3]29.9 mi (3:43 / mi) +600m 2:10 / km
Stillwater/Bardswell Fery loop in the Conway Hills. Worked the hills.

Monday Jul 28

trail running 6:21 [3]0.75 mi (8:28 / mi)
On the NE side of Mt. Toby, to the start of the "Power Line Power Climb".
run/hike 13:31 [4]0.8 mi (16:53 / mi) +250m 5:20 / km
Up to the top, 8/10 mile, 800' climb. Surprised myself by running about 2/3 of it.
trail running 22:59 [2]2.9 mi (7:54 / mi)
Gently back down via the jeep road. A decent outing, weather was a bit cooler and less humid.

Sunday Jul 27

biking 3:25:49 [3]56.3 mi (3:38 / mi) +900m 2:10 / km
With Jeff Saeger. From Greenfield, loop through Warwick and Wendell, moderately hilly, gusty SW breezes. Very pleasant ride even though the legs and butt were dragging by the end. Need to investigate a new saddle....

I want to do a long ride sometime in September so I need to do a few longer outings. Current thought is a "Tour of Franklin County", visiting all 26 towns in the county. We did all the eastern ones today, checking out a possible route. I think the western half will be a little longer, the whole thing maybe 120 miles. We shall see -- plans are easy, execution is the problem.

Friday Jul 25

biking 39:48 [4]13.0 mi (3:03 / mi) +30m 1:53 / km
Back from Northampton after leaving the car for service. Flat, very slight tailwind, working hard to stay at 20 mph after an easy first mile.

Thursday Jul 24

trail running 30:14 [3]3.5 mi (8:38 / mi)
Up to power line and back. Not much change -- warm, humid, the deer flies are out, and calf/achilles still complaining....

Tuesday Jul 22

biking 2:36:55 [3]39.9 mi (3:56 / mi) +550m 2:21 / km
Was reading a report of a local bike ride (see July 17 entries) that claimed they had just done the toughest hill in the area (South Mountain Road from the Community Church on Rt. 63 to Sky Farm on the south shoulder of Crag Mt.), so of course I had to go try it.... Made it up, but it was close and for about 50 meters I was zig-zagging. Warm and humid and legs still felt beat from last weekend.

Monday Jul 21

biking 52:17 [3]15.3 mi (3:24 / mi)
Leverett loop, very easy to start (feeling sore and tired), but finished with a good effort for the last 30 minutes.

Sunday Jul 20

biking 2:22:05 [3]38.7 mi (3:40 / mi) +950m 2:07 / km
A loop around Squam Lake. No long hills, but a seemingly endless succession of short steep ones. A good interval workout. Another beautiful day. Two more sets of tennis afterwards, one mixed doubles (a triumph!), one another moral victory in singles with 2 games won.

Quads sore before starting, very sore in the evening, but no so bad out on the bike.

Saturday Jul 19

run/hike 1:29:39 [3]6.0 mi (14:56 / mi)
To the top of Mt. Mooselauke via the Ridge trail, about 2500' climb. Ran the first 40 minutes, then ran/walked the rest. Perfect day, good views from the top even though it was a bit windy and chilly and we didn't linger.
trail running 50:24 [2]3.7 mi (13:37 / mi)
Back down the Gorge Brook trail. Took it easy, not trusting my agility so much these days and, since I've not been doing much downhill running, not wanting to totally trash my quads.

Also, two sets of tennis before dinner. I won 4 games, which I considered a moral victory!

Friday Jul 18

biking 22:00 [3]6.3 mi (3:29 / mi)
In New Hampshire visiting Phil on the north side of Lake Winnipesaukee. A short ride before dinner (was supposed to be short and easy....)

Thursday Jul 17

biking 1:50:42 [3]29.8 mi (3:42 / mi) +600m 2:10 / km
Stillwater/Bardwell's Ferry loop in the Conway hills. Trying to learn how to pace myself on (5-10 minute) climbs. Legs felt good at times, beat at times...

Wednesday Jul 16

trail running 30:28 [3]3.5 mi (8:43 / mi)
Up to the power line and back. Still feeling fragile.

Tuesday Jul 15

biking 52:23 [3]15.3 mi (3:25 / mi)
Leverett loop. Took it quite easy for the first half, second half was harder with a few "sprints", just to see what was possible....

Monday Jul 14

biking 1:11:54 [3]21.9 mi (3:16 / mi) +220m 1:59 / km
Three bridges loop, pretty hard effort.

Sunday Jul 13

trail running 28:40 [2]
In White's Woods in Litchfield, rather carefully. Calf seemed to be pretty much ok.

Saturday Jul 12

biking 2:03:00 [3]34.85 mi (3:32 / mi)
Greenfield, Gill, Northfield, Millers Falls. With the wind going out, unfortunately that meant coming back was a bit more work.
Need to try out a few different saddles....

Thursday Jul 10

biking 1:31:52 [3]25.9 mi (3:32 / mi) +450m 2:05 / km
Wyola-Shutesbury loop. Wasn't pushing the pace and felt beat anyway.

Wednesday Jul 9

biking 31:16 [3]9.9 mi (3:09 / mi)
Along the river just before dinner to get a little exercise after a stressful day.

My routes from the events in Idaho and Colorado are posted at http://users.crocker.com/~pg/

Tuesday Jul 8

biking 49:40 [3]15.3 mi (3:14 / mi) +220m 1:56 / km
Leverett loop, clockwise. Nice to be out on the bike again, but worked harder than intended. Heat sucks and I'm not sure how healthy the air is, but at least the flies can't keep up.
Note
My routes from the events in Washington are posted at http://users.crocker.com/~pg/

Idaho and Colorado will have to wait another day....

Monday Jul 7

Note
Back from Colorado about midnight. Had a good trip, even though could have done without the sore calf. Orienteering overall was a little shaky, concentration not what it should be at times. Either not enough oxygen to the brain, or not enough working brain cells left...

Sunday Jul 6

orienteering 41:40 [4]5.4 mi (7:43 / mi) +300m 4:05 / km
Day 4 at "The New, New Blue Mountain". Chase start. I went out about 5 minutes after a sizable mass start of people who were outside the chase, so the forest was rather littered with people for the first couple of legs. Calf sore as usual, but 6 advil beforehand instead of the usual 4 kept things under control.

Good run, no mistakes, good effort, though I was a little disappointed in how much walking I did on the ups. But the course was a lot of fun.

Overall a really fine event. First time I'd been to one of these in Colorado (only O' in the state before had been a rogaine), and I was surprised by how nice the O' was. Good forests, good visibility, could run in shorts (with mini-gaitors fashioned from duct tape), but also demanding enough terrain that would cost you if you stopped paying attention. Will have to go back.

Saturday Jul 5

orienteering 53:06 [4]6.4 km (8:18 / km) +250m 6:56 / km
Day 3 at "The Map Formerly Known as Blue Mountain" -- when Platt is involved, you know that one way or another some things are going to be weird (there is a big rock on the map called "Stenen Rock", Stenen being Swedish for "the rock", so it's really "The Rock Rock").

Bad day. Spiked #1, actually spiked the rock it was supposed to be on, but the control was on another rock about 70 meters away and I circled a bit before spotting it. Rather pissed (i.e. motivated), picked up the pace, made idiotic parallel error at #3 (having just picked up Lyn Walker, who will now never dare follow me again, she should know better). Now highly pissed and more motivated, ran hard to just about #8 when my calf cramped up on a steep downhill and it was hoppity-hop the last 2 km to the finish.

Only bright spot was my walk back out to #1 afterwards, where I discovered that Platt, who many years ago made some maps that one hopes for his sake have all been burned, is now mapping really well. Complicated rocky area was mapped perfectly.

Friday Jul 4

orienteering 34:46 [4]5.5 km (6:19 / km) +130m 5:39 / km
Day 2 at Round Mountain. Calf felt a little better, and I was reasonably pissed from day 1 run, so I ran as hard as I could. Maybe 30 seconds of errors. Only problem was calf started to complain more seriously as a result of the faster pace. But a good (and fun) run and lots of heavy breathing.

Thursday Jul 3

orienteering 42:40 [3]4.5 km (9:29 / km) +180m 7:54 / km
Ash Fest day 1 (Manitou Lake). Calf sore, took it careful on the running. I would also say took it easy, even though that's not compltely true as I was feeling the altitude and breathing pretty hard even running downhill.

Crappy run, missed a couple of controls and bad execution on one leg.

Tuesday Jul 1

Note
Been to canyon country in SE Utah, now in SW Colorado. Calf still sore, don't know how much O' I'll be doing at the Ash Fest.
