Sunday Aug 31 | ||
| orienteering 1:09:30 [4]7.1 km (9:47 / km) | ||
| Red course at Pawtuckaway. Good run for the most part. Always in touch with the map (no more than a minute of errors), but physical effort was there at times and not there at others. Legs felt good, so it was mostly a matter of willpower. In recent years I've lacked confidence in my fitness -- offten justifiably so -- and tended to back off whenever the going got a little harder. Legs are in decent shape now, so it's a matter of mental discipline.... | ||
Red - Splits | ||
Saturday Aug 30 | ||
| orienteering 14:10 [4]1.6 km (8:51 / km) | ||
| Pawtuckaway. Mass start to determine seeding. 4th on Red course. | ||
| orienteering 12:42 [3]1.27 km (10:00 / km) | ||
| Round 1 vs. Dennis Struble. | ||
| orienteering 12:27 [4]1.31 km (9:30 / km) | ||
| Round 2 vs. Suzanne Armstrong. She made one small mistake, but on a short course it was enough. I was struggling to keep up, but felt stronger the moment I was ahead.... | ||
| orienteering 11:57 [4]1.34 km (8:55 / km) | ||
| Semi-final vs. Katarina Smith. Ran ok, but just couldn't keep up. | ||
Thursday Aug 28 | ||
| biking 3:08:00 [3]51.3 mi (3:40 / mi) | ||
| Up to Conway, Shelburne Falls, and Colrain. Pleasant route, not too hilly, but one of those days when it felt like the wind was always in your face. Didn't push it the last hour as I was feeling tired and dehydrated. 8:35 up the hill out of Colrain (1.15 miles, 470' climb), good for me.... | ||
Tuesday Aug 26 | ||
| run/hike 1:06:32 [3]5.0 mi (13:18 / mi) | ||
| Up Killington Peak from the main base lodge (run/hike, 43 minutes), run back (23:32). About 1700' climb. Trail a little crappy going up, came down different way mostly on gravel roads. One crash but no serious damage.
Good effort just to do it. Had just finished 18 very hilly holes with Mike Fritz (a very erratic 86), and the alternative was lunch....
Sunday Aug 24 | ||
| biking 4:23:25 [3]72.9 mi (3:37 / mi) | ||
| Around Quabbin Reservoir (Amherst, Belchertown, Ware, Hardwick, Petersham, Wendell and home). This was one of my long loops when i was biking 25 years ago. Used to do it a little uder 4 hours, but it was 9 miles shorter (but hillier at the end) as I lived in Amherst.
Beautiful day, about 70, though quite breezy and I was getting blown around a bit. Time doesn't include stopping at the Hardwick General Store for something to drink. Bought a Gatorade to refill my bottle, but they were low on change for my $5, so I bought two bottles and downed one on the spot. Can't have hurt. I'm prone to getting dehydrated and my energy today was pretty good right to the end.
Saturday Aug 23 | ||
| trail running 6:10 [3]0.75 mi (8:14 / mi) | ||
| Over to the start of the Power Line Power Climb. | ||
| trail running 13:01 [4]0.8 mi (16:16 / mi) +240m 5:14 / km | ||
| Up the Power Line. Must be moving better than last time (three weeks ago), almost 20 seconds faster, although it might just have been the better weather (upper 70s, not very humid). | ||
| trail running 35:51 [3]4.2 mi (8:31 / mi) | ||
| Back down with a few small ups thrown in for variety. Overall a good run and good effort. | ||
Thursday Aug 21 | ||
| biking 1:25:11 [2]23.0 mi (3:42 / mi) | ||
| With Walter and a couple of his friends, loop in Conway and Ashfield. A few hard efforts, but overall an easier pace than usual. | ||
Wednesday Aug 20 | ||
| biking 1:22:00 [3]23.0 mi (3:34 / mi) | ||
| With Phil, to Westhampton and partway to Chesterfield (we took the wrong turn and at one point you might say that we were, well, lost). Fun ride, seemed to consist of a long climb and then lots of sprints. | ||
Tuesday Aug 19 | ||
| trail running 55:38 [3]6.0 mi (9:16 / mi) +270m 5:03 / km | ||
| M&M trail north of the Shutebury Road, up to the height of land and back. Not so hot as it has been. | ||
Monday Aug 18 | ||
| biking 1:43:45 [3]29.5 mi (3:30 / mi) +500m 2:05 / km | ||
| Millers Falls, Wendell, Wyola. Nice late afternoon. | ||
Sunday Aug 17 | ||
| biking 2:14:10 [3]39.4 mi (3:24 / mi) +730m 2:00 / km | ||
| Group ride from Shelburne Falls up to Hawley and Plainfield and back via Ashfield and Conway. Nice to have an effective tailwind much of the time! Legs felt better climbing (it was a little cooler), but then the climbs weren't as steep... | ||
Saturday Aug 16 | ||
| biking 3:07:11 [3]46.2 mi (4:03 / mi) +800m 2:23 / km | ||
| From Shelburne Falls though Buckland, Charlemont, Monroe, Rowe, Charlemont again and back. Felt very sluggish, got dehydrated despite stopping twice for drinks. Barely made it up the climb out of Monroe. | ||
Friday Aug 15 | ||
| orienteering 1:14:01 [3]7.2 km (10:17 / km) +250m 8:46 / km | ||
| TGoIF (NEOC) A meet at Baldwin Hill. Hot and humid and a bit more foliage than when I was there before (December 2001). Good run/walk, no mistakes, not much energy either. | ||
Red - Splits | ||
Thursday Aug 14 | ||
| biking 1:35:30 [2]25.0 mi (3:48 / mi) +300m 2:17 / km | ||
| Easy pace with Walter up to Greenfield and back. Lots of discussion of the upcoming Great Franklin County Tour to all 26 towns of Franklin County. Distance will be 125-130 miles, date Sept 27. More details to come.... | ||
Sunday Aug 10 | ||
| orienteering 51:03 [4]5.9 mi (8:39 / mi) +225m 4:48 / km | ||
| Day 2 at Oak Hill. Ran much better on much easier terrain (both physically and technically). Second both days on the Red course but way behind John Fredrickson. Looking forward to cooler weather eventually.
My routes. | ||
Red Day 2 - Splits | ||
Saturday Aug 9 | ||
| orienteering 1:35:37 [3]6.6 mi (14:29 / mi) | ||
| Boulder Dash Day 1, Red course. Very, very slow. | ||
Red Day 1 - Splits | ||
Thursday Aug 7 | ||
| biking 1:29:39 [3]25.9 mi (3:27 / mi) +500m 2:02 / km | ||
| Up Shutesbury hill, back via Wyola. Felt slow/sluggish over to East Leverett but got up the hill pretty well and then worked pretty hard the rest of the way (even the long gradual downs).
The route and a profile -- the second one down on the page -- (but I did it the reverse direction, equivalent to from about the 30 mile point to the 5 mile point). Wish I had the program for creating the maps and profiles, but I think you need a PC, not a Mac.
Tuesday Aug 5 | ||
| biking 1:59:44 [3]32.2 mi (3:43 / mi) +700m 2:10 / km | ||
| Over to Amherst, up the hill to Pelham, north on 202, up the hill to Shutesbury from the east, and down the S curves and home. Very humid again, rained a couple of times, didn't really seem any different as I was already soaking. Good steady effort on the climbs. | ||
Monday Aug 4 | ||
| trail running 43:42 [3]4.75 mi (9:12 / mi) | ||
| From the gate over to the power line and back. Tired, oppresive humidity, calf/achilles complaining a little. Had planned more but cut it short. | ||
Sunday Aug 3 | ||
| biking 27:37 [2]7.0 mi (3:56 / mi) +110m 2:20 / km | ||
| Nice relaxed ride up to Walter's to join him and Phil for an outing. Tail wind and new pavement! | ||
| biking 2:17:26 [3]35.4 mi (3:53 / mi) +800m 2:15 / km | ||
| With Walter and Phil through the Goshen and Ashfield hills. Mix of mellow and hard paces (several good doses of lactic acid on the climbs), plus some nice fast downhills. Caught some rain the last five minutes. | ||
| biking 24:35 [2]7.0 mi (3:30 / mi) +20m 2:10 / km | ||
| Back from Walter's, downhill then flat. Strange ride. First getting poured on, then within a couple miles the sun was out, then with about 2 miles to go I could feel myself bonking, made it up the driveway but not with much to spare. Probably both low blood sugar and dehydrated (dewpoint was 73, we were all sweating like crazy). Had to remember my old post-ultra routine -- eat/drink, nap, eat/drink, more nap.... | ||
Saturday Aug 2 | ||
| biking 49:58 [3]15.3 mi (3:16 / mi) +230m 1:56 / km | ||
| Leverett loop, easy the first 20 minutes, hard the last 30. | ||
Friday Aug 1 | ||
| trail running 6:32 [3]0.75 mi (8:43 / mi) | ||
| Similar to Wednesday, over to the start.... | ||
| trail running 13:18 [4]0.8 mi (16:37 / mi) +250m 5:15 / km | ||
| Up the climb, ran all but about 1 minute on the last steep pitch. Nice day for running, low 60s and steady rain.
(Did a little research afterwards, found I'd run this hill in 10:12 back in 1980. Nevertheless, I'm surprised to be doing it now as well as I am. I thought 16 minutes would be as good as I could do, 50 feet a minute climb. We used to have a race up the hill, the Power Line Power Climb. 8/10 mile, 800' climb. A guy drove out from Boston one year, thought it was an 8 mile race, didn't see the decimal point, was rather pissed. Best time was about 9 minutes. One year we had a special event -- the Power Line Power Hour -- to see how made round trips could be made in an hour. I got three with about 5 minutes to spare and I think that was the best. Eric Weyman had the fastest downhill time, about 4 and a half minutes I think. It was very impressive!)
| trail running 49:18 [2]5.5 mi (8:57 / mi) | ||
| Back to car via S curves, Muck and Sugar trails. | ||
