Tuesday Mar 30

trail running 1:12:00 [3]
Exploring a few trails north of Rt. 2 in Gill with Ken Walker. Beautiful day, lots of up and down, relaxed pace.

Monday Mar 29

trail running 28:52 [3]3.5 mi (8:14 / mi)
ahr:142 max:159
Up to the power line and back. Heavy legs going up, ran harder back.

Sunday Mar 28

orienteering 1:49:12 [3]14.2 km (7:41 / km) +390m 6:46 / km
ahr:148
Re-ran the Billygoat from 2001 at Gay City. Nice cool day, woods were beautiful, even a few scouts out orienteering. Good, steady effort. Ran all the hills except for about 50 meters going up to 19. Routes and comments.

Saturday Mar 27

trail running 48:58 [2]
ahr:128 max:147
Easy run exploring some trails north of Rt. 2 in Gill.

Friday Mar 26

trail running 1:25:02 [3]
ahr:137 max:166
Hot, well warm anyway, about 70, stayed mostly on the trails because I had shorts on. Relaxed pace except for a couple of steep climbs checking out Mineral Hill, surprised myself by running all the way up.

Thursday Mar 25

track 20:57 [5]5 km (4:11 / km)
ahr:159 max:170
5 x (800@3:10-3:15, 200@55-60). First track workout in a long time, just what I was planning, but harder work than I hoped. But it's a start.
Passed 3,000 meters in 12:36. Best ever was about 10:15-10:20 on the way to 3,200 in 10:58. Best ever 5K was about 17:40. Ain't ever going to see those again, but 5K in 20 minutes is a good target.
trail running 24:15 [2]
Warm-up, warm-down.

Wednesday Mar 24

part trail, part woods 1:14:40 [3]
ahr:143 max:162
Similar to yesterday, warmer day (low 50s), snow going fast.

Tuesday Mar 23

part trail, part woods 1:08:17 [3]
Willis Hill in Montague, about 45 minutes in the woods, mostly bare ground but still a few inches of snow in places. Nice steady effort. Have to keep doing the off-trail training, it makes a difference.

Sunday Mar 21

orienteering 1:01:56 [4]7.9 km (7:50 / km) +290m 6:37 / km
Ran hard again, but didn't orienteer as well. Still a good weekend, won one and lost one vs. both Eglinski and Mennehan. Routes and comments.

Red Day 2 - Splits

Saturday Mar 20

orienteering 1:07:12 [4]8.8 km (7:38 / km) +265m 6:38 / km
ahr:158 max:172
Day 1 on Red course, real good effort on a very warm day.

Red Day 1 - Splits

Friday Mar 19

orienteering 20:30 [3]2.56 km (8:00 / km)
ahr:142 max:158
St. Louis A meet at Hawn SP (site of the 1984 US Champs). Ran most of model course. Relxed pace.

Thursday Mar 18

road running 42:50 [3]5.5 mi (7:46 / mi)

Wednesday Mar 17

spinning 40:00 [2]

Tuesday Mar 16

trail running 1:06:41 [4]8.0 mi (8:20 / mi)
ahr:150 max:168
Race course over to the gate and back. Got out early before the snowstorm. Almost all bare ground (for a few more hours...), just a little ice. Good hard effort, legs felt good.

Sunday Mar 14

road running 59:43 [3]7.0 mi (8:31 / mi)
Fun run from Graham Warder's in Shelburne Falls. Had a very pleasant relaxed run on the roads with him, catching up on old times.....
trail running 54:38 [3]
.... then did the trail up Massamett Mountain (up 1100' in 21:20, some ice, mostly bare ground), down the other side to Davenport's Sugar House (would have been nice to stop for pancakes and maple syrup), then back up to the top (400' in 9:18, all still snowpack) and back down to Graham's. Tired legs and lots of heavy breathing.

Friday Mar 12

trail running 1:09:53 [3]8.2 mi (8:31 / mi)
ahr:147 max:164
Robert Frost loop on Mt. Toby. Blue sky when I started, snowing hard when I finished. Moderate pace, a little quicker at the end when I also coudn't see much....

Thursday Mar 11

part trail, part woods 56:26 [3]
ahr:135 max:157
NW of Greenfield above the Green River. A fellow at the sport store where I bought a pair of shoes yesterday said there was a nice snowmobile trail there so I thought I'd try it out. No luck, but I did meander through/across a sand pit, a tree farm, a couple of muddy corn fields, several patches of woods, .... and nobody took a shot at me. So I guess it was a success. But not worth a repeat.
Feeling tired, though better at the end.
New shoes definitely do not look new anymore.

Wednesday Mar 10

orienteering 51:43 [4]5.8 km (8:55 / km)
ahr:147 max:167
At Harvey Hill using USGS map, same training course I ran last spring in about 59 minutes. Definitely stronger now, but a couple minutes of the difference was in route choice not in speed. And at one point I wasn't 100% sure if I was at the right knoll or not, but just kept moving. And last spring at this time I was in terrible shape.
Still some patches of snow, but not more than about 10% of the time. Woods ok in places, junky in others.
road running 9:00 [2]
Cool-down.

Tuesday Mar 9

part trail, part woods 1:10:00 [3]
With Ken Walker again, over to and around and about on Willis Hill in Montague. Not much snow left. Explored the north side for the first time, woods were junky and selectively logged, excellent training! Overall, about 25 minutes on trails, 45 in the woods.

Monday Mar 8

road running 42:48 [3]5.5 mi (7:46 / mi)
ahr:142 max:158
Got out just before dark on a hilly loop north of Greenfield. Good steady pace.

Sunday Mar 7

part trail, part woods 1:43:00 [3]
With Phil in the hills just west of Northampton. Trails were icy, so we ventured into the woods frequently, but there was a lot of mountain laurel. Managed to avoid most of it, except for about 10 minutes in the middle. Overall, a relaxed pace, a little tired, but a good run.

Saturday Mar 6

part trail, part woods 1:00:15 [3]
ahr:145 max:168
With Jeff Saeger in Montague. Lots more bare ground now, spent maybe half the time off trail. Light rain, soaking wet before long, but a lot of fun.

Friday Mar 5

spinning 50:00 [2]

Thursday Mar 4

part trail, part woods 1:04:00 [3]
With Ken Walker over by Willis Hill in Montague. Real nice to have company. Conditions were better than Tuesday, still pretty sloppy but the snow/ice is shrinking. Legs felt good.

Wednesday Mar 3

road running 1:22:46 [3]10.2 mi (8:07 / mi)
Loop north of Greenfield, moderate pace.

Tuesday Mar 2

part trail, part woods 1:01:23 [3]
ahr:139 max:156
Interesting run. Wasn't really into it at the start, figured I'd try a little on the trails to see how bad they were (warm weather has turned them into a mix of ice and slop). They were pretty lousy and not much fun. But then I spotted a couple of bare slopes on the SW side of Willis Hill, and a circuit there got me going.
The rest of the run was like a trail race in wet conditions -- you spend the first part trying to keep your feet dry, but after a while you don't care how wet you get, and enjoy it more in the process.
Snow, ice, mud, water, whatever, but I never went in more than knee deep, and had just a fine time.

Monday Mar 1

part trail, part road 25:48 [2]
Poet's Seat ridge, feeling very tired from yesterday, but better for having done something.
