| Day 2 at Dutchman Flat.
Excellent run -- decent energy, good physical effort, excellent willpower and concentration, and my orienteering was pretty much perfect. Will have to give some thought to adding it to the top ten list (which has been stuck at 6 candidates for the last 18 months -- perhaps this will motivate me to resume working on it...). And to repeat, it is a fantastic area, another fine course, and overall one of the best O' experiences that I've had in the US. Thanks to CROC and ORCA and course setters Jeff and Andy for making it happen.

| Day 1, US Champs in Bend, OR.
A terrific area, wide variety of terrain put to good use by the Red Y course I was running. At some point in the middle of the course I was thinking that this would be a fine place to hold the World Champs.... My own run was uninspired. A few minor time losses, plus time wasted being too careful, also had no energy, maybe because the altitude (6-7,000') was kicking in. Nothing really bad, but feeling like I was moving in slow motion the whole time. I'll post my routes in a couple of days.

| Relay, ran first leg on a CSU team with Victoria and Jon Campbell (and a great last leg by Jon got us into 3rd place in the open class).
Had an ok run until a couple from the end when I thought I was farther than I was and turned off the trail to look for the control too early. Loss was less than a minute but cost 3 or 4 places, not a big deal, just a bit of pride at stake. Other than that, just working hard the whole time, navigation was a mix of following but also trying to find ways to save a little time/distance whenever possible. Which made it a lot more fun and better practice than just hanging on to someone's back the whole time. Went down to Crater Lake in the afternoon. Really beautiful.

| Sprint at Central Oregon Community College. Much more interesting/difficult that I had imagined -- I'd thought most of the terrain would be around the college buildings, whereas most of it was in the forest just west of campus. Ran well, but O' was shaky, not relating map and terrain well at all. Got lucky a couple of times -- there's a control, oh, it's mine!

| orienteering 37:48 [4] 4.8 km (7:52 / km) +100m 7:08 / km | ||

| Middle distance in the afternoon at Arnold Ice Caves. A neat area topographically, though the running was tougher than expected -- you had the choice of rocks, or soft sand, or sage, and the sand was best (though it took me a while to figure that out -- I was running in it much of the time and finding it was a struggle and trying to find something better, by the end it seemed easier just because I accepted the fact that it was better than anything else).
A good run, at most 30-45 seconds of errors. Got a little extra motivation at the end because I knew Pam had run 38:03. I was 36 with a control still to go and looking a little doubtful, 37:15 at the top of the last hill and looking very doubtful (and I said to myself, it's ok, you came close), and then I remembered I'd started my watch 10 seconds early, and zipped down through the sage fast as I could. Would have made it even without the extra 10 seconds, should be a lesson to stay away from pessimistic thoughts....

| I was chatting with Bob Lux yesterday evening about how fast we could run a mile in these days. I think I remember saying I thought I could get under 6. So today I had to try, and despite a good effort, under 6 was not to be. 6:01.5 for 1600 meters, add a couple seconds to get a mile time. Didn't feel particularly zippy, so on a better day it should be possible. | ||

| Operating under the theory of "if you aren't going to train much, at least train hard," it was back to the track with the usual group (all non-orienteers except for Phil). 6 x 800 with a 2 minute rest between, 3:08, 3:06, 3:05, 3:00, 3:01, 3:05. First 3 felt easy, last three hard, almost bagged it after one lap on the last one. | ||

| So 12 hours after pontificating about the virtues of never quitting, I drop out of a 10K with a couple miles still to go. Hmmm. I suppose I can excuse it by saying the weather was brutal, dewpoint about 75. What I actually should have done is not even started. Nothing to be gained in such conditions, and if I hadn't pre-entered a month ago I wouldn't have gone.
The course in Shalburne Falls has a wicked hill starting at about 2 miles. Had nothing for it, walked the steeper parts, then was struggling just to keep going on the ensuing downs. Finally decided to stop, was feeling a little too wobbly for my peace of mind, with visions of lying by the side of the road. I think I've dropped out of about half a dozen races -- 3 100-milers (all hot weather) where I was really croaked, my first marathon where I discovered where what the "wall" was, a trail 50K (again really hot), and a 5-miler in Amherst many years ago on a day like today, where I quit after 3 miles and was glad I did. The ambulances were busy at the finish that day. A bad day like today poses the question as to whether it will always be like this (feeling tired/weak) from now on. So far the answer has always been No, there have been more good days in store, but at some point the answer will be Yes. I'd better enjoy things while I can.
Thursday Aug 11 | ||

| trail running 28:59 [3] | ||
| weight:141lbs shoes: Air Max Trail | ||
| To the power line (16:26) and back (12:34), a little quicker at the end. Plenty of oxygen, but plenty of those little fahrenheit and dewpoint guys too. Had a hard time getting out the door, haven't done a "training" run in more than 3 weeks, but I guess it was better then expected (or maybe not as bad as expected).

Monday Aug 8 | ||
| Note | ||
| Spent the night in Chicago, courtesy of United Airlines. Sure seemed like general incompetance (i.e. nothing mechanical or weather related). Took an hour to turn a 70-seat regional jet around in Colorado Sprints, including 15 minutes trying to decide if there were 61 or 62 people on board. I think there were 62 bodies and they had collected 61 boarding passes. They must have counted empty seats half a dozen times (it's really not that hard....) and asked a couple times if anyone on board wasn't meaning to go to Chicago.
And then in Chicago it took us 30 minutes from touch-down to arrival at the gate, including an extra loop around terminal C and then a while just sitting waiting for a gate. Missed our flight to Hartford by 10 minutes. Then after standing second in line for a few minutes at the gate for the departed Hartford plane to have the agent rebook us for the morning, the agent looked up and announced he was going home after he dealt with the person he was dealing with and we'd have to go somewhere else. I'm just glad I don't have to fly all the time....

| Relay Champs, running 4th on 12 point team. Gail, Viktoria, and Suzanne performed so well that all I had to do was not mis-punch or skip a control. Feeling tired from the last few days, didn't run (or walk) agressively at all, but no mistakes. Team won by about 15 minutes. Would have been interesting if we had been in the 8 point class.... | ||

| US Night O' Champs at Manitou Lake. Another very good run af a careful start (very low confidence!). Second to Walter Siegenthaler on the green course by a few seconds, first in M60. Very satisfied, probably best night O' ever (though I haven't run very many). | ||

| Day 1 of the Colorado 3 Day. Borrowed a compass from the Balls, and promptly smashed it about 8 minutes into the course. Pretty good run except for one control late, where a compass would have been very handy. Very interesting area, some controls were very tucked away. I liked it, some hated it, definitely would have been better if controls had been more open.
Cold rain -- I thought this wasn't allowed.

| The Chase -- started just after Vald and Vadim and almost managed to keep up to them. Good effort, good run until the last control, could have used a compass there (compass seemed to stop working about halfway, suddenly had a huge bubble....). | ||
