orienteering 35:53 [3] 4.4 km (8:09 / km)
rhr:48 weight:135lbs shoes: new Integrators

Flying Pig, first day (middle distance), M45. Same map as used for the 3rd day of the Team Trials last year. Hillsides are still steep and muddy, though a good bit of the course was on more gentle terrain.

3 mistakes, all easily avoidable, not sure what I was doing, total maybe 2-3 minutes. Ran ok, didn't really push it. Problems seemed to start when I got near the home for abandoned pigs, don't know why. Need to get my head straight for tomorrow, get rid of the "I don't like this terrain" thoughts.

Met Max for the first time. Didn't seem to scare him, like I often do with little kids. And he kept coming back for more of my Cliff Bar.

I'll post routes when I get back.

Out to the start.

Day off today with the Pig starting tommorow. So I went over to the golf course and hit a few golf balls for the first time in 6 months. Didn't whiff a single time, though there were a couple of close calls.

Will has bailed on our relay team (citing academic obligations and something to do with his PhD dissertation, talk about having your priorities screwed up...), but I think we have recruited mindsweeper for a non-official CSU 8-point team with Suzzane, Gail, and me. Suprising/sad that CSU can't even get a single official team there. Need to get our act together.

13 hills loop. Relaxed pace for the first half, a little more energetic on the way back. Another perfect day, trails in excellent shape, clearly not very useful preparation for the mud and thorns this weekend. Or the NEOC meet next weekend. But just right for Northern Nipmuck the weekend after that.

Still feeling the effects of the race/cake, plus various warnings from SF about the effect of a change in the G on international economic conditions, have combined to make me feel unduly stressed, since I now feel obligated to not post the daily reading until after the market closes for the day. By which point, I have trouble remembering not only what the morning reading of the G was, but also just what sort of workout I did at my usual 1 pm outing and what clever/amusing thoughts may have occupied my mind and kept it off the discomforts at hand.

But I will try.

I do remember that I added a little extra onto the end of my 13 hill loop, making it the 16 hill loop ("hill" is defined quite loosely, though it does always indicate movement in an upward direction), and that quite early in the loop where I cross Mountain Road there was all sorts of excitement -- a couple of fire engines, an ambuance, a couple of police cars, traffic halted. I correctly surmised that it had nothing to do with me (if I'd already posted the day's upward break-out of the G , then I might have been concerned that they were just keeping an eye on me in case of sudden terminal cake induced obesity). A little further along I came upon the rescue operation, perhaps 10 people escorting a stretcher with someone presumably strapped on, though I couldn't see for sure. But no signs of blood, no screaming, for all I know it was a case of acute pison ivy. Or maybe just a drill in case the terrorists come to Greenfield and start mugging people in the woods.

The only other item of interest is that last night on the way home I killed a cat. Seriously. Just down the street. It darted out and before I could hit the brakes I had hit it. Right by the Williams Farm. The light was on in their house, so I went and knocked on their door, and they opened up, an old couple, very fine people, I've known them for 20 years, and I told them I'd killed one of their cats. And they said they had about 20 "barn cats" and it happens from time to time and there was nothing to be done and don't worry about it. But I still felt like crap.

Easy run on the 13 hills loop. A few sore muscles, but nothing too bad.

road running race 1:27:30 [4] 13.1 mi (6:41 / mi)
weight:135lbs shoes: Pegasus 10/05

Westfield Half Marathon. Fantastic run.

Had run the race four times before, best in 82:45 in 1996 (age 51), worst in 94:34 the last time I tried it in 2002. So the goals for today were beat 94, then maybe beat 7 minute pace (about 91:45), then maybe maybe beat 90. And also in the back of my mind was seeing how close I could come to Balter's time of 86+ in Brooklyn a week ago.

The legs felt good warming up. And they continued to feel good, one of those days that a slight incline feels flat and a flat feels downhill. 6:41 for the flat first mile felt comfortable, then the next 3 miles were uphill and I was astounded to be under 7 minute pace. Wasn't sure if I'b blown it by going to fast, and by miles 8 and 9 I was getting a bit leg heavy, counting down the miles slower than I wished and doing the math in my head to see how much I could slow down and still break 90. Mile 11 started with a modest up, but I got up it ok and then it was like the legs got a second windand I felt good all the way in. Got within a minute of Greg, I thought as I finished, only to find out later that he'd run 87:10 and I was only 20 seconds off. Excellent. (Note: this is all preparation for our grudge match, over a course and distance yet to be determined, when he turns 50. If I can keep my weight down to 1 G, I think I can take him.)

Splits: 6:41, 6:55 (up), 7:13 (up), 6:48 (up), 6:28 (down), 6:25 (down), 6:32, 6:31, 6:47, 6:51, 6:36, 6:35, 6:30, 38. 5 miles: 34:05, 10 miles: 67:11, last 5k: 20:19.

Legs will be trashed for a couple of days, and I might have used up my good legs for a while, but so what.

Warm-up

Note

Drove down to Litchfield after the race to see my mother, taking along a cake I made the night before. It seems like a pre-race intake of the extra frosting didn't hurt. Now we'll have to see if the 3 pieces I put away at her house speed or hinder recovery.

speed golf 34:00 [4]
weight:135lbs shoes: Air Max Trail 09/05

Back to the golf course again, this time trying to be as macho as Kristin and run all 18 holes hard with recoveries at a slow jog from the green to the next tee. Good workout, felt ok except for a headache all day.

speed golf 38:52 [3]
shoes: Air Max Trail 09/05

9 holes before, 9 holes after, a little shorter than the other 18, since then I was taking the long way around each green to stretch out the recovery as long as possible.

trail running 54:12 [3]

"13 hills" loop in Greenfield. Well, it's actually the usual loop but it sounds better if I call it something different.

Was feeling a bit sluggish and uninspired, perhaps because of a couple of burgers in late morning, but then as I was heading up hill 8 my mind wandered to AttackPoint matters, namely Swampfox's problem with the meaning of W, and the next thing I knew I was at the top of the hill without even being aware of any effort. Thank you, SF. And don't be distressed, everyone has a bad day, even I'm sure your fellow intellectuals Newton and Einstein (though with Einstein it may have just been perpetual bad hair days).

And before I knew it, hills 9-13 were also done, and at a better pace....

trail/woods running 1:02:36 [3]
weight:135.5lbs shoes: Pegasus 10/05

Back to another familiar spot, Wills Hill in Montague, where the forest is clean enough to make woods running pleasant, and junky enough to make it useful training. About 30-35 minutes off trail.

Highlight was toward the end as I was coming down the west slope of Wills Hill and I scared up a critter about the size of a large cat, black or very dark brown, and the first thing that popped in my head was fisher, though it had been a long time since I'd seen one and wasn't sure what they looked like.

Anyway, it headed off along the slope and I took off after it, fast as I could though I was losing ground. After about 30-40 yards it started up a tree, and if I'd been smart I would have stopped and just observed. But it saw me still coming and instead of going higher in the tree it dropped down and took off again, this time up the rather steep slope and it wasn't long before it has disappeared in the underbrush. It seemed to be moving at about .5W.

Pretty neat anyway, as I had a real good look at it. But I wonder if any of the nearby homes are missing any cats.

trail running 1:01:16 [3]
rhr:49 weight:135.5lbs shoes: Pegasus 10/05

I've been told I should do something other than the "usual trails," so I drove over to an area I ran a bunch of times last winter, north of route 2 in Gill. Out and back from where Rt. 2 crosses the Connecticut River north to Darby Hill (topo). Some areas of frost holes but very nice overall and a good change from the usual. A nice day too.

trail running 54:51 [3]

Usual trails, cold and very windy even in the woods. Felt crappy to start, a little weak in the middle, and better towards the end.

trail running 1:36:00 [3]
weight:136.5lbs shoes: Pegasus 10/05

On Mt. Toby with Rob Higley, a good bit better runner (36+ at Holyoke yesterday and good on trails), so it was about a 3.9 effort just for ego reasons. Legs were getting tired but still got up the last hill pretty quickly. Two good efforts in a row.

Legs were feeling pretty trashed for the rest of the day. But I have some long courses coming up in the next 2 months and need to get ready.

road running race 41:15 [4] 6.21 mi (6:39 / mi)
rhr:48 weight:136.5lbs shoes: Pegasus 10/05

Holyoke 10K, 41:15, 14 seconds faster than last year, ok. A little cold (mid 30s) and very windy, sometimes it was a nice push from behind, sometimes not so nice. Seemed like hard work the whole way. Route. 99th out of about 2500, 3rd 60+. Results.

Course is flat for the first mile, then up somewhat for the next 3, then sharply down for mile 5 and a little more down for mile 6. Splits: 6:34, 7:09, 7:01, 7:06, 5:47, 6:25, 1:14. Just a few seconds slower than last year on the way up, then faster coming down (getting hurt, and then helped, by the extra weight that has appeared the last couple of days).

road running 25:00 [2]
shoes: Pegasus 10/05

About 15 minutes before and 10 after.

Thursday Mar 16, 2006 #

trail running 54:56 [3]
rhr:49 weight:135.2lbs shoes: Pegasus 10/05

Usual route, relaxed pace, feeling a little sluggish. No sign of any hanging rabbit parts.

Wednesday Mar 15, 2006 #

trail running 55:12 [3]
rhr:48 weight:135lbs shoes: Pegasus 10/05

Same route, relaxed pace, day dreaming most of the time. Cold, windy, snowing lightly, really pretty with the snow sticking to the hemlocks but the ground still mostly bare.

Then went to the store to get the usual supplies: bread, juice, yogurt, suet (for the woodpeckers), got tempted by a packet of trail mix (peanuts, M&Ms, raisins, other nuts), succumbed, polished off the whole thing by late afternoon, feeling a little bloated, not sure how much the G will spike at tomorrow morning's weigh-in.... Is this the beginning of the end? 145 here we come again?

Tuesday Mar 14, 2006 #

trail running 49:15 [4]
rhr:47 weight:135lbs shoes: Pegasus 10/05

Usual trails (same route as March 10), slowly cranked up the pace after the first 10 minutes, last 25 minutes was good hard effort, inspired mainly by a curiosity to see if I could do the loop in under 50 minutes.

Had thought about going to the track, but it's very windy and that's a pain on the track. Plan is to run easy the next couple of days, take Friday off, then have a go at the Holyoke 10K on Saturday and/or the last of the Sugarloaf indoor meets on Sunday evening. Depends on what the weather is like.

And looking ahead to the NEOC A meet, do I want to do 13+ km on Sunday? Would certainly get to see most of the park.

Monday Mar 13, 2006 #

trail running 53:53 [3]
rhr:47 weight:135lbs shoes: Pegasus 10/05

Usual trails. Light rain most of the time, a few minutes heavy rain in the middle, no big deal though it would have been smarter to wear my contacts.

If I'd been home, not working, all the time I pleased, I wouldn't have gone out. As it was, I didn't think twice, 1 pm came and I was out the door, though the ladies at work now are completely sure I'm nuts. Or maybe they just think I'm strange?

Sunday Mar 12, 2006 #

trail running 1:11:57 [3]
rhr:48 weight:135lbs shoes: Pegasus 10/05

On Mt. Toby, Robert Frost loop. Didn't feel any need to run long or hard, so I didn't.

Saturday Mar 11, 2006 #

trail running 52:55 [3]
rhr:48 weight:135lbs shoes: Pegasus 10/05

Late afternoon at Northfield Mt., perimeter loop, up the north side in 33:45, down the south in 19:10. Footing was a little soft/unstable in places where the top layer has thawed but there is still ice below, but a really nice day for running, sunny, mid 50s, shorts and a t-shirt. Felt lousy to start, the better. Steady effort going up, in control, then pushed a bit coming down, working on downhill running.

Friday Mar 10, 2006 #

trail running 55:57 [3]
rhr:48 weight:135lbs shoes: Pegasus 10/05

Usual trails, nice relaxed pace. Getting a bit muddy as the frost comes out of the ground, but still pretty good.

Warm weather (upper 50s) was a reminder that it won't be long before we're complaining about the heat.

Need to get my entry in for the Flying Pig, which means deciding what course to run. Would be nice if the course lengths were available so I knew what I was signing up for. Some events get that info out early, thank you.

track race 19:42 [5] 5.0 km (3:56 / km)
rhr:47 weight:135lbs shoes: Pegasus 10/05

Well, I was so impressed by Hammer's "Emma intervals" (45 on, 15 off x 32) that I thought I should try them, but I know I'm not as tough as Hammer so I figured I just shoot for 26 reps instead of 32, and then I still wasn't sure I could do the whole set so I left off the 15s.... Which left me with a 5K if I went fast enough.

Went to the Eaglebrook track, good day for a hard effort, light rain, about 40, almost no wind. Goal was under 20 minutes, so I figured I'd shoot for 6:20s for the 1600s, which would leave me a little cushion. Ended up doing 6:20.7, 6:20.3, 6:18.3 and 43.8 for the last 200. Seemed like hard work all the way but my concentration was good, didn't miss a single turn....

400 splits: 94.7, 95.7, 94.3, 96.0, 95.9, 95.3, 94.7, 94.4, 94.7, 94.8, 94.9, 92.8, and 43.8 for 200.

Quite pleased with the result. Best for the distance was 17:43 some time ago.

Before and after.

Wednesday Mar 8, 2006 #

trail running 1:01:27 [3]
rhr:49 weight:135.5lbs shoes: Pegasus 10/05

On the north section of the ridge, don't usually go there since it's mostly a collection of dead-end trails, but seemed like a good place to go on a day when I was feeling not too energetic. Felt better towards the end, finished with a climb from the river up to the tower that didn't feel bad. But wasn't pushing the pace.

They have a TV set in the gym where I take a shower and it was on Fox News, and they were showing live coverage (Live!!) of some police chase in LA. And all I could think was how idiotic this was, this was national news? And do the airhead announcers have a clue? Fortunately I was out of there pretty quickly and didn't have to put up with it for long.

Tuesday Mar 7, 2006 #

trail running 51:05 [3]
rhr:49 weight:136lbs shoes: Pegasus 10/05

Same route as yesterday, intensity was about a 3.8 compared to 2.8 yesterday. Trying to run at just under threshhold pace, keeping the breathing and heart rate under control.

Another perfect day, not so much in need of a nap, though it's looking like a long evening at work....

Monday Mar 6, 2006 #

trail running 55:21 [3]
rhr:48 weight:136lbs shoes: Pegasus 10/05

Usual trails, relaxed pace, legs a touch sore from yesterday. And afterwards, could have really used a nap....

Sunday Mar 5, 2006 #

trail running 1:56:54 [3] 14.0 mi (8:21 / mi)
rhr:46 weight:136lbs shoes: Pegasus 10/05

Ran the Mt. Toby race course, which had been the plan (basically to run for two hours), though at various times I thought about coming back from the top a shorter way (making it a Bricker two-hour run?). But when I reached the top in 63+, it seemed like I shouldn't waste the opportunity to try to go under 2 hours. Splits were 63:37 and 53:17. Course.

A good hard effort, a struggle at times towards the top going up and on the climb from the gate coming back, but the split back was good. Conditions were pretty good, some snow but all packed and with good traction, and a little ice -- went down once, just not paying attention. And a perfect day, mid-upper 30s, sunny, little or no wind.

Friday Mar 3, 2006 #

Note

Finally got around to posting my maps from Florida.

trail running 55:54 [3]
weight:136.5lbs shoes: Pegasus 10/05

Usual trails, harder pace the last 15-20 minutes. A cold and blustery day, winter seems to be staying around, though it is supposed to be warmer by next weekend. Which can only lead to one thing -- mud. Running conditions right now (a little snow, a little ice, a little firm bare ground) are actually excellent.

I thought I should pass on the secret to the recent decline in the G, and it's all because of the 2 or 3 bacon double cheeseburgers on some tasty whole grain bread that I polish off every day between breakfast and dinner. The key ingrediant is the bread, very tasty indeed, and especially important because my version of the burger holds the bacon, and, well, holds the cheese, and, well, holds the burgers too, as well as any mustard, catsup, relish, onions, or special sauce. What's left is very tasty and suits me just fine. Very similar the Swampfox's cheese sandwiches, except, as you can tell by looking at him, he doesn't hold back on the cheese.

Note

I've been getting really frustrated the last week and a half dealing with my web page -- the host decided to upgrade its security and for some unknown reason I've been unable to upload anything since then, despite extensive attempts to figure out what was wrong. So I signed up with another place and have gotten all (I think...) the pages transfered over. Now if I can just get a link posted on the old site, though there's no reason to think that will work either.

The new site is www.petergagarin.org The old site at crocker is still there, but it won't be updated any more.

trail running 1:14:00 [3]
rhr:48 weight:136.5lbs shoes: Pegasus 10/05

Usual trails, with an extra loop at the end to stay out a little longer. Felt ok. Cold and gray, but we're missing another storm that is passing just to the south.

Wednesday Mar 1, 2006 #

trail running 1:05:09 [3]
weight:137lbs shoes: Pegasus 10/05

Usual trails, still cold and windy, but a lot better in the woods than out on the roads. Seems like we're getting the winter that never showed up in January.

Legs felt ok.

Plan for March is to just keep up the training, maybe squeeze in a race or two, try to keep the G in its current low range.
