road running 38:11 [3] 4.7 mi (8:07 / mi)
shoes: Asics trail

With Dave, Lovers Lane loop from the office. Usual aches.

Good and useful conversation the whole way. I had a not so good PSA number at my recent blood test, probably the start of a journey I don't look forward to taking, one that Dave has been down in the last 3 or 4 years. (Despite that, he is running better then in many years.)

A reminder, if one is needed, of the value of friends.

Usual stuff. Knee felt sore today, even though it wasn't bad on yesterday's run, nor after. Try again tomorrow.

trail running 41:17 [3]
shoes: Asics trail

In Greenfield up on the ridge. Trails were packed out well, just a little rough footing and a bit icy, might get a lot more icy after tonight if we get rain as predicted. But it was real nice to get out and do the 40 minutes I planned. Could certainly feel the hills. Knee was not bad, though a little sorer afterwards.

nautilus 25:00 [1]

The A set of machines afterwards, plus a little time on the foam roller for the quads and backs of the legs. On the quads it is especially painful, though the last couple of trips up and down weren't as bad.

Knee more sore from yesterday than I would wish.

trail running 39:17 [3] 3.9 mi (10:04 / mi)
weight:140lbs shoes: Asics trail

Up to the power line via 47 and Claybrook because the back trail isn't runnable, at least not by someone in my condition. North Mountain was mostly ok, well packed snow, except for a few places that were sheet ice covered by the light dusting of new snow. Could manage on the way up, on the way down I got smart and went in the woods.

Nice to get out and off the roads, but my body sure isn't used to it. Breathing too hard for the pace.

Usual 10 tons or so.
So here is what I'm doing, generally all is 16 reps, trying not to strain so I don't hurt anything:
Hamstrings 45, leg extensions 80, bench press 60, pullover, whatever it is called 90, triceps press 50, some arm thing, elbows up and out 40, abs 70, curls 50, adductors 60, abductors 70 (or maybe I have them reversed), leg press 170, fly 40, some sort of arm extension 40, lower back 70, upper back 50, rotation, each way 45, triceps 45.
Hard to see where the 8 pounds is going to come off of, good as I am looking now.

treadmill 31:01 [3] 4.0 mi (7:45 / mi)
shoes: Asics trail

Included a mile at 7 minute pace just for variety, nice to do a little deeper breathing. More aches than pains.

treadmill 24:52 [2] 3.0 mi (8:17 / mi)

Knee still complaining. It would be nice if it calmed down just a little more, so I could venture outside without wondering if it is suddenly going to start hurting when I am a ways from home. But at least the running is feeling a little better.

Maybe a little bit better.

treadmill 20:00 [2] 2.32 mi (8:37 / mi)
weight:141lbs shoes: Asics trail

Knee feeling irritated enough to be annoying but not quite enough to stop.

So here is the predicted course of the G over the near future, based on the current 141 (and an unposted recent high of 144):

Feb 1 - 139
March 1 - 137
April 1 - 135

Just a warning....

road running 18:51 [2] 2.08 mi (9:04 / mi)
rhr:54 weight:142lbs shoes: Asics trail

Knee still off, but it seemed to recover from two days ago, so I figured I ought to try again. Quite chilly, but for the time being at least I have plenty of natural insulation.

nautilus 1:10:00 [1]

Good workout. Knee was sore after yesterday, so no run today, but it was feeling better as the day went on. Well, actually I did run a little, to the car after the UMass BB game to beat the crowd, knee felt ok and I was on the road before the jams started. Try again tomorrow.

Also decided it's time to try a little harder to keep the G under control.

road running 19:03 [2] 2.08 mi (9:10 / mi)
shoes: Asics trail

Another day, another mile. Actually 2 miles today! Whoopee. Knee still aches some, but it is slowly calming down. Don't notice it most of the time. Hope I am not overstressing it with these long runs....

My computer at work is starting to behave itself too. Had the computer guy in yesterday, mostly to deal with remaining issues with my tax software. Of course he had to also deal with other pressing issues, like how to make the print larger on AttackPoint. Well, smart as he was, he couldn't. He could change the screen resolution, which he did, which made it a little more legible, but the place where you can make the text smaller or larger had no impact at all, other than making the bullets larger. I guess when you use crappy products (PC and Explorer) you have to expect crappy results.

road running 13:53 [2] 1.5 mi (9:15 / mi)

A little bit icy. And a little bit farther. Still pretty feeble.

road running 8:33 [2] 0.92 mi (9:17 / mi)

Outside, in shorts! It wasn't all that warm, I just forgot to take my long pants.

Felt old, slow, and still a little sore.

nautilus 1:00:00 [1]

Note

So after spending a few hours yesterday dealing with new software and a new computer (one of the PC things) and continually running into problems, and mostly solving them, I show up today and discover a whole extra set of problems. Time to start over. Called up the guy we got the computer from, the one who supposedly transferred all the files over, get him to come back and do it all over again, this time hopefully right. And then re-install the 07 software.

There is reason to believe this might actually work (bearing in mind that a definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different outcome). He was told not to copy over the files from years prior to 2003, but I think what he did was look in the tax folder and just copy files starting with 03 through 06. Which was ok in itself, except he forgot about a lot of other files that don't start with any number at all (licenses, documents, settings, all the stuff I was dealing with yesterday, plus today's surprise, all the depreciation data, plus who knows what else).

So tomorrow morning I get to start all over again, with more success I hope.

I suppose in the meantime I am learning a little more about how those second-rate PCs work. Though this is interfering with my plans to go over to Worcester and find John Fredrickson and collect the bounty.

Feeling tired, maybe because I'd just been to the dentist and the right side was numb, so all my muscles weren't kicking in?

treadmill 4:00 [1] 0.3 mi (13:20 / mi)

Knee still a little sore, but this was about .28 miles farther than any running in the last four weeks, even if it was barely a run.

nautilus 1:10:00 [1]

Just another day in my "getting buff" program, plus cross-connecting with a couple more folks.

Actually the system at the gym is rather entertaining, because all the machines are hooked up to a computer and when you are done you have a record of it all. Which is interesting in itself, you can even access it from the web. And apparently it logged in all the stuff I did when I last was doing this about three years ago, so I can look up and see what I was doing then.

And you can see how you stand against all the other folks at the gym, if you're so inclined.

But the most entertaining is the single number it gives you at the end, namely, how many pounds you lifted. Which I can't remember exactly -- I know, I can access it from here, but it seems like they only upload the stuff in the wee hours each night, so what I can see from home doesn't have the current day.

But I think it was a little over 12 tons. :-)

Of course my hero Doyle could do that in about 30 reps.

hike 58:31 [1] 4.36 mi (13:25 / mi)

Just walking but working up a sweat....

Saturday Jan 12, 2008 #

nautilus 1:05:00 [1]

hike 29:36 [1] 2.08 mi (14:14 / mi)

Fast walking, still a little soreness, so no running yet. But maybe before long.

Friday Jan 11, 2008 #

nautilus 20:00 [1]

After 45 minutes at a foam roller class.

Thursday Jan 10, 2008 #

Note

Had a close look at a redtail hawk. It had its eye on some small birds, which evaded it.

Sunday Jan 6, 2008 #

Note

Checking out some possible O' terrain, though it seems better for a rogaine. Did a lot of walking, knee complaining.

Note

20 push-ups.

1.5 x A, plus B.

Got home, was sitting by my computer, wanted to make a call, couldn't find my cell phone. Looked in the car, not there. Called up the gym, they checked the locker I used, not there. Went back to check by the computer, it was sitting there in plain sight, open, ready to use. Must be getting short.

hike 31:10 [1] 2.08 mi (14:59 / mi)

Same as Wednesday, quite dark at the end, dodging cars on 47. Ran for 20 yards, still not good.

Thursday Jan 3, 2008 #

nautilus 55:00 [1]

2 x A and 1 x B.

Went to the UMass BB game last night, one of the most entertaining I've ever been to, 95-89 over Houston, full speed all the time, made even more enjoyable by third-row seats with Seth, everyone looks bigger and faster than if you are sitting up higher. Good to catch up with him, he was quite envious when I told him about meeting Big Deli.

Wednesday Jan 2, 2008 #

hike 32:22 [1] 2.08 mi (15:34 / mi)

Cold and windy but had to do something. Knee a little better, but even the walking still isn't pain free.

Tuesday Jan 1, 2008 #

nautilus 1:10:00 [1]

Once around the A and twice around the B. Had the place to myself, must have been the snowstorm going on outside.
