biking - red bike 45:32 intensity: (59 @1) + (8:55 @2) + (33:20 @3) + (2:18 @4) 12.38 mi (3:41 / mi) +568ft 3:31 / mi
ahr:136 max:156 weight:141lbs

In Litchfield again, just enough time to squeeze in a short ride. Glad I don't have to end most rides by coming up the Gallows Lane hill.

We have an agreement to sell the house, so most of the morning spent at the lawyers and the afternoon dealing with tax and accounting issues. But progress... :-)

11 AM

hike 1:00:23 intensity: (11:40 @1) + (45:46 @2) + (2:57 @3) 3.19 mi (18:56 / mi) +946ft 14:47 / mi
ahr:111 max:134 weight:141.5lbs shoes: pegasus 6

From the Notch, the M&M to the top of Norwattuck, then tdecided to come down the old jeep trail on the south side -- the only times I remember going that way was many winters ago training for Barkley, when it was as snow-free (and as steep) as anything around -- actually jogged down most of it, slowly, no falls, not even any stumbles. Taking Charlie's advice and looking where I was putting my feet. :-)

Then back along the south side, picked up a bike trail I'd never been on that skirted the edge of the quarry.

Nice outing, not too hot, but still sweating a ton.

biking - red bike 1:25:15 intensity: (9:24 @2) + (59:37 @3) + (14:39 @4) + (1:35 @5) 23.74 mi (3:35 / mi) +976ft 3:27 / mi
ahr:143 max:166 weight:141lbs

Ride with Phil from South Hadley, around the range clockwise. Modest breeze, generally out of the east. Warm, but a thin cloud cover kept it much more tolerable than if the sun had been out.

And managed to pretty much keep up, though he may have been toying with me...

And earlier, an hour and a half stroll around the MHC campus checking points for Friday's sprint.

hike 2:26:58 intensity: (1:06:09 @1) + (1:14:22 @2) + (6:27 @3) 5.67 mi (25:56 / mi) +1834ft 19:51 / mi
ahr:105 max:136 weight:141lbs shoes: pegasus 6

Across the river from Brattleboro. Good pace climbing up Mt. Wantastiquet, sweating away even at a relatively early hour. Then meandering over to Indian Pond, lots of stop to appreciate the forest. Good pace all the way back, came down a somewhat more direct way.

Back seemed to hold up for the most part. And no falls. Rather parched by the end.

hike 1:33:57 intensity: (54:32 @1) + (39:25 @2) 4.84 mi (19:24 / mi) +950ft 16:21 / mi
ahr:98 max:123 weight:140lbs shoes: pegasus 6

At Northfield Mountain, part on ski trails, more on hiking trails. Warm day, worked up a good sweat, at least on the way up.

View at the top. Not sure what the huge sacks of ??? are....

12 PM

biking - red bike 11:30 intensity: (4:04 @1) + (7:26 @2) 2.29 mi (5:01 / mi) +83ft 4:51 / mi
ahr:103 max:120

A bike ride that was intended to be short and easy didn't even come close to that. Hot, no energy or desire, looked around a little bit and called it quits. Time for a nap.

3 PM

biking - red bike 1:45:10 intensity: (25 @1) + (15:04 @2) + (1:22:07 @3) + (7:34 @4) 27.76 mi (3:47 / mi) +1465ft 3:36 / mi
ahr:138 max:157 weight:140lbs

A quick trip to Litchfield was needed (showing the house), put my bike in the car just in case. Stopped on the way home at Charlie's regular spot, Pleasant Valley, and did Charlie's regular route -- Riverton, then Sandy Brook road.

Felt much better than yesterday. Wasn't as hot, at least not there, low 80s and overcast, felt very pleasant. When the road tilted up after Riverton I just put it in a lower gear and kept trying to produce circles.

Figured I'd turn around when I reached the end of Sandy Brook Road, but I felt good and the state line beckoned, so off I went. Except when I got there the mileage was short -- seemed I'd taken a short cut instead of following SBR to its end. Cut out one hill. Was dirt, but one of the reasons I got wider tires was to make dirt roads easier/safer.

Corrected my error on the way back -- one long and delightful downhill. Except for my butt, which feels a little tenderized...

hike 2:43:49 [1] 5.19 mi (31:33 / mi) +89ft 31:03 / mi
weight:141lbs shoes: pegasus 6

On the north side of Quabbin, sometimes moving energetically, sometimes not at all. Starting to get warm.

1 PM

biking - red bike 40:01 intensity: (1:14 @1) + (19:38 @2) + (19:09 @3) 10.38 mi (3:51 / mi) +302ft 3:45 / mi
ahr:128 max:149

Cut it short, just too hot combined with tired legs was not a productive combination.

4 PM

hike 1:01:07 [2] 3.01 mi (20:18 / mi) +746ft 16:26 / mi
shoes: pegasus 6

A late afternoon outing on North Sugarloaf, outer loop, up the north side, down the south. The temperature had dropped a few degrees, plus in the shade, plus a breeze, so reasonably pleasant. And the legs felt better.

And did my good deed for the day -- soon after I got back to my car a young woman arrived (I'd seen her near the top, going the opposite direction). She was looking a bit weary, glad to be done, except it seems she was not at the parking lot where her car was.

After some discussion, it was clear that her car was at the parking lot at the south end of South Sugarloaf, and we were at the north end of North Sugarloaf. The map on her phone, and her interpretation of it, had been lacking. And when I said the shortest way back was a little over 2 miles, she did not look happy.

I guess one of the advantages (?) of being old and small is that you look less threatening, for she didn't have to think very long before accepting a ride. Plan B, I suppose the standard these days, was just to call a friend and get them to come rescue her. Walking back? No way.

Just part of my continuing education in the ways of the young. Though I must admit that I carry a phone too, and I can imagine lots of situations where plan B is to call Gail. :-)

11 AM

hike 1:16:10 [1] 3.52 mi (21:37 / mi) +791ft 17:50 / mi
weight:140lbs shoes: pegasus 6

At Mt. Tom, hiked up from Lake Bray to Goat Peak, then down mostly via the road and one loop around the lake. Very pleasant and the rain held off. Worked up a good sweat going up.

5 PM

biking - red bike 33:39 intensity: (1:19 @1) + (14:32 @2) + (17:48 @3) 9.27 mi (3:38 / mi) +123ft 3:35 / mi
ahr:126 max:148

Short ride on the flats trying to pedal not quite so much in squares. :-)

Monday May 23, 2016 #

3 PM

biking - red bike 1:20:09 intensity: (49 @1) + (15:53 @2) + (1:01:53 @3) + (1:34 @4) 20.7 mi (3:52 / mi) +947ft 3:43 / mi
ahr:136 max:153 weight:141lbs

Up to Lake Wyola and back. Not much energy on the way up, better on the way back, neither one a surprise. The new bike continues to be a pleasure, stable and smooth.

Earlier, took a hike up Mt. Holyoke on the road, back via the M&M trail, the latter bringing back a lot of old memories.

biking - red bike 1:00:47 intensity: (54 @1) + (24:24 @2) + (33:11 @3) + (2:18 @4) 16.82 mi (3:37 / mi) +429ft 3:32 / mi
ahr:131 max:157 weight:141lbs

Whately and Hatfield. Don't know if my legs are getting any better, but my butt is getting tougher. It wasn't complaining at all today.

Nice trip out to Knightville Dam this morning, never been there before.

Saturday May 21, 2016 #

Note

Was over at Quabbin this morning. With the exception of one O' event in the SE corner several years ago, haven't done any orienteering there for a long time. In places the vegetation sure has changed -- red pine plantations dying out, some cutting and regrowth, fewer deer eating the underbrush -- all combining to make the place look a lot less like the wide open place it was. Good forest management, I suppose, but I miss the way it was.

2 PM

biking - red bike 56:06 intensity: (49 @1) + (6:29 @2) + (44:56 @3) + (3:52 @4) 15.28 mi (3:40 / mi) +604ft 3:32 / mi
ahr:138 max:157

Leverett loop clockwise. Took it easy up the first few hills and then worked a little harder the rest of the way.

Friday May 20, 2016 #

3 PM

biking - red bike 1:17:11 intensity: (54 @1) + (17:20 @2) + (58:15 @3) + (42 @4) 20.33 mi (3:48 / mi) +655ft 3:41 / mi
ahr:135 max:153 weight:140.5lbs

River Road - Deerfield. Seemed like the (gentle) wind was always in my face, though maybe that was all in my mind. In any case, just a modest effort, especially going up the hills. More fun that way.

ahr:122 max:159 weight:141lbs

Decided to see if I could make it up South Sugarloaf in the new bike (with a double ring in front instead of a triple, but more gears in the back). Seemed about the same, next-to-lowest gear for the first part, then lowest gear for the rest, not dying but not much in reserve either. 10:23 up.

Otherwise, short and mellow ride.

Earlier, got to watch a few of our feathered friends up real close --

biking - red bike 1:35:59 intensity: (53 @1) + (40:19 @2) + (54:47 @3) 26.19 mi (3:40 / mi) +199ft 3:38 / mi
ahr:130 max:146 weight:140.5lbs

Down to the Coolidge Bridge on the east side of the river, back on the west side. The only problem with the route is that a little bit of it is in Northampton, which lived up to its reputation -- bad pavement, and I got yelled at by the usual yahoos that seem to hang out only in Northampton around here.

Westerly breeze, so a crosswind most of the time. Good steady pace, not hard. New bike is nice, soaks up the bumps better, and the 28mm tires are nice, certainly helped when I spent much of Damon Road riding on the dirt shoulder (traffic was mostly standing still). Ah, Northampton, nice town but not for biking.

biking - red bike 58:20 intensity: (1:02 @1) + (7:34 @2) + (37:44 @3) + (12:00 @4) 15.23 mi (3:50 / mi) +683ft 3:40 / mi
ahr:140 max:156 weight:141lbs

Leverett loop, counter-clockwise. Very windy out of the west and cool.

ahr:94 max:124

Back to Pond Mountain to finish up (maybe?) vetting the points for the Long and Middle at the Team Trials. Takes a while, as it always does, including a few minutes doing some map corrections with a Sharpie, because that was all I had... :-)

1 PM

orienteering 41:59 intensity: (14:25 @1) + (27:34 @2) 1.39 mi (30:06 / mi) +435ft 23:14 / mi
ahr:106 max:126

And a couple more points easier reached from a different parking place.

orienteering 28:44 intensity: (6:32 @1) + (22:12 @2) 1.18 mi (24:15 / mi) +251ft 20:12 / mi
ahr:108 max:129

And still a couple more points easier reached from a different parking place.

ahr:127 max:148 weight:141lbs

Breeze out of the south again. Best to start off into it.

biking - red bike 29:59 intensity: (58 @1) + (14:20 @2) + (14:41 @3) 8.39 mi (3:34 / mi) +77ft 3:33 / mi
ahr:125 max:148 weight:138.5lbs

Got the new bike today. Also did the closest thing to bike maintenance I've done in years (adjusted the seat, loosened the pedals, put on a rear-view mirror). That will probably be about it for maintenance for quite a while. :-)

As far as the specs for the bike, the one thing I'm pretty sure of is that it is red. Bright red. With a little bit of white. Right now it is clean and shiny. That will not last. As far as the brand, or anything else, I don't know, but here's a photo, and maybe you can tell something from that.

Took it for a ride on the flats around town. Seems to go faster than the old one, despite the fact that I am rather depleted from yesterday. Maybe there is a motor hidden in the seat tube. Just have to find the on-off switch. Won't Phil be surprised!

orienteering 6:03:38 intensity: (2:14:09 @1) + (3:44:52 @2) + (4:37 @3) 8.24 mi (44:08 / mi) +2006ft 35:52 / mi
ahr:104 max:134 weight:140.5lbs

Many many hours vetting points at Pond Mountain, at least a couple more hours than it should have taken, but you play with the cards that are dealt you.

On the other hand, the forest is gorgeous.

ahr:134 max:154 weight:141lbs

To Montague again, nice late afternoon, less windy.

biking 50:56 intensity: (53 @1) + (29:10 @2) + (20:38 @3) + (15 @4) 12.85 mi (3:58 / mi) +291ft 3:53 / mi
ahr:127 max:152 weight:141lbs

Gentle ride to Montague, with a detour out to the end of Wills Ferry Road, never been there. Body pretty sore from yesterday, including right shoulder I landed on once, but back doesn't seem to be among the wounded parts.

Yesterday seems to have turned out just about right. My navigation was perfect, the company was excellent, but it is also very clear that I have no aspiration to do any more competitive orienteering. And that seems just fine. And good to finish up with a Billygoat.

Sunday May 8, 2016 #

11 AM

orienteering 2:43:14 intensity: (30:03 @2) + (2:10:09 @3) + (3:02 @4) 7.62 mi (21:25 / mi) +612ft 19:54 / mi
ahr:137 max:155 weight:141lbs shoes: x-talon 212

Billygoat at Townsend. Had a nice walk around the course with Charlie, lots of good conversation, occasionally even about where we were going. No mistakes. Back was mostly OK, despite about a dozen falls, but legs very tired and butt and hamstrings rather sore. But could have been much worse.

I haven't really though much about the course design, but once aspect of the course deserves mention, and that is the placement of the controls. Excellent job by Alex (and Ed checking?). Nothing bogus, nothing vague, just nice distinct points. The way it ought to be.

And a very nice ride over and back with Phil, plus a fine visit from Dave Pruden last night. So much to be thankful for.

My sense is that my orienteering days are (about) over, though Phil is not at all convinced. :-)

And of course not a day to totally ignore my current pastime (which I am not at all skilled at, but enjoying), along the way I tuned into several black-and-white warblers, ovenbirds, chipping sparrows, a wood thrush, and a couple of towhees. Better than I expected for not paying attention.

ahr:126 max:150 weight:141lbs

Up to Montague, not much zip, but not trying too hard either.

Note

Regarding this, just one of a number of "discussions" over the years that have made me wonder about the mental health of some folks in this sport. Fortunately they are well outnumbered by some very fine folks.

3 PM

ahr:142 max:161 weight:141lbs

Leverett loop, counter-clockwise. First day in a while with dry roads, although still cool, cloudy, and breezy. But needed to get out and do something.
