ahr:124 max:154 weight:138.5lbs

Better today. Another mild day, mid-40s, no wind, overcast. Roads wet after some earlier showers. But reasonable energy and much more enjoyment.

ahr:144 max:158

Flats south of town. Mid-40s, S 10-15. Into the wind the first half, then with it.

Ate lunch just before heading out, not sure that was a good idea. Also was dressed for 15 degrees cooler, sweating a lot. Or maybe it's something else. Was feeling very tired the first despite not working hard, pulse was high too, stayed high in relation to perceived effort the whole time. Maybe just more of the old age stuff.

ahr:129 max:143 weight:138lbs

Too nice a day not to go out, about 30F and a light breeze from the south, sunny, and I managed to get going early enough for once (a couple of hours later the temperature is about the same, but the sun is lower and there is somewhat more traffic, neither of which is preferable).

South of town, flat, rather pleasant. Nice coming back north on 47 with a bit of a helping breeze.

ahr:137 max:151 weight:138lbs

It had been raining pretty hard much of the day so I assumed no outdoor activity was in store, but about 3:45 the clouds broke, the sun came out, and there was some blue sky. And still time for a ride.

North up along the river and back, mid-30s, minimal wind, roads very wet. Very glad to get out. And maybe one of these days I'll get a couple of attachable fenders...

5 PM

Note

And then off to a school committee meeting. Yup, seemed to have gotten myself appointed, first meeting was last month and I haven't quit yet.

Tonight was mainly financial stuff, including a first go at the FY19 budget. Long meeting but seemed very productive, or maybe that was because yours truly was asking at least 80% of the questions. :-)

ahr:130 max:150 weight:137lbs

Nice day, mid-40s, very light breeze from the south, so went a little longer, down to Northampton and back. Nice choice of route, got to stop and admire a snowy owl along the way.

ahr:135 max:153 weight:138lbs

Nice day, lots of melting going on, mid-40s, W 5mph. Flats south of town, roads were dry maybe half the time, but only ice was at the top of our driveway.

Put out a decent effort. Or maybe my conditioning isn't very good right now. Been slacking for the last month or so. Will probably continue such for another month or so. If there was a training plan, that would probably be part of the plan, so no problem.

Joined the group at Walter's -- Bill and Siel, Gary, Dusty, Tim, and Walter -- for a session. He has it all set up, just hook up your bike, put in a figure for watts, someone chooses the program, and off you go for an hour. Program this time, after a good warm-up, was 3 x 20 x (10" hard, 20" easy) with 5' easy betweens blocks.

Things brightened up significantly when I discovered the power of the little electronic box in front of me, more precisely the up and down arrows, even more precisely the down arrow, that being the magic button, you press it and number of watts the machine demands of you drops by one. You keep pressing it, the number keeps dropping. Nirvana.

So I went from the first block being a struggle, wondering how I would manage to survive the hour, to (after hitting the down button a lot of times) the second and third blocks being not unpleasant at all.

So nice when you can just let your ego take a timeout.

fat biking 38:40 intensity: (10 @1) + (6:30 @2) + (22:31 @3) + (9:29 @4) 3.22 mi (12:01 / mi) +422ft 10:41 / mi
ahr:148 max:180 weight:138lbs

With Walter and Gary, in the woods up behind Walter's place. Good conditions, mix of ice, crusty snow, and bare ground. Borrowed Siel's fat bike (she's laid up with a broken arm), tires fully studded. About 10F, NW breeze but you don't feel it in the woods.

Not a sterling performance. First, dropped the chain off the inside of the cassette, took a while to get it unstuck. Then started back up without realizing the front end had done a 180, knew something was wacko, stopped to check if the handlebars were reversed and somehow decided they were OK. Wasn't until Walter came back to see if I was all right that it dawned on me that they were actually reversed. Which certainly adds to the challenge -- feet kept hitting the front wheel whenever I turned a little and could hardly reach the brakes. Don't know what I was thinking.

And then generally feeling totally exhausted. Don't know what the deal was with that.

Very glad they were happy making it a short outing. And I'm hoping this was just one of those days and not the new normal.

Note

A lot of warm rain overnight (and then turning sharply colder). We went back to have a look at where the turtle was. No sign of turtle, also no sign of any ice, just open water.

Also stopped in and chatted with a ranger. Sounded like what we saw was not too unusual. He was a little surprised an eagle hadn't swooped in for an easy meal. I'm guessing that the thick fog precluded that fate. But we'll never know what happened to that fellow.

Gail spotted this guy, thought it was dead --

On closer examination (but not too close), it was clearly alive, but barely moving. Perhaps it was about done with, or perhaps this time of year that's just the way it is. Its speed seemed to be about 2 or 3 minutes per foot.

She also spotted this guy, thought it was dead too --

But it was just napping.

biking - dark blue bike 1:23:24 intensity: (54:23 @1) + (29:01 @2) 16.64 mi (5:01 / mi)
ahr:99 max:124

Out with Gail again, this time along the east side of the Great Dismal Swamp, using an abandoned road that has been converted to multi-use. Nice place to ride, also a bit weird just now as it was low 60s out but also snow and ice around. Most of the road was clear but wet, some puddles, and some snow/ice/slush.

So we got a bit wet, and Gail crashed twice in the snow/ice/slush, but it seems she mostly survived. And it was fun in the way things can be fun/interesting/adventurous just by being different than usual.

Stopped a couple of times to look around, had to put out some effort to catch back up.

ahr:129 max:152

Heading north, but still balmy, upper 50s. Shorts and a LS shirt, normal bike gloves. Pulled off the interstate to visit a short bike trail along the Neuse River, just 2.9 miles one-way. But it was excellent, not a single road crossing and a good bit of character -- not a rail trail so not dead straight.

By myself, Gail figured a day off was wise, so I put in a good effort. And then packed up and hit the road, made it through NC without spending a dime. Or does that not matter anymore? Can't say I keep up with the shenanigans in NC politics.

Legs felt good, but then were well rested.

Did the Spanish Moss Trail from Port Royal to Clarendon Road north of Beaufort, and back. Real nice, paved and wide enough and well maintained. About 60F, light breeze from the north.

Another pleasant ride with Gail, out to the north end of the island. Not much reason around here to ever change gears. Warmer, upper 50s and a light breeze from the north.

Meandering around a bit of St. Simons Island, combining a bit of exercising with some sightseeing. Mid 40s, NE 20 mph and gusty, sunny.

Note

Sometimes it's hard to know for sure whether something that happens should be viewed positively or negatively. Perhaps that statement will be clearer if I cite an example from this morning. Early this morning.

The alarm in our room went off at about 6 am, courtesy of the previous guest, I assume. Now awake, I decided I needed to pee, so off to the bathroom, a very short distance and there was enough light that there seemed no need to turn on any more.

Past the open door, hand on the wall on the right just for the usual security. Took a step or two, move my hand forward, but there was no more wall, just a shower curtain. And since I was leaning just a bit that way, and the shower curtain offered no support, the next thing I knew I was tumbling through the curtain and into the tub, eventually ending up more or less on my back in the bottom of the tub, but crosswise, legs sticking out of the tub.

This is clearly another sign that the end is near, and that statement, by the way, is not (at least at the current time) a positive statement.

I have certainly fallen lots of times over my decades of orienteering, but never did I end up in a bathtub. It is quite distressing.

On the other hand, I suppose it's rather positive that no part of me other than my pride seems to have been injured. I doubt that there are many on AttackPoint who have fallen into a tub as gracefully or as damage-free as I seem to have done. :-)

Not that I wish to do it again. Though something tells me I surely will.

With Gail, up to the north end of the island, back along the ocean for a bit. Low 40s and a little breezy. Felt chilly.

Out to the north end of the island. Nice outing, more touristy than anything. Late afternoon, finished just as the sun was setting, mid-40s, W 5-10. Definitely balmy.

ahr:131 max:157

Back to the bike trail after breakfast, this time on my own. Upper 20s, NW 10 mph, but no problem staying warm as I was working harder (except for a bit in the middle when I was exploring the riverfront across from Augusta). Totally enjoyable except for, well, I was working harder.

10 AM

Note

Today's reloading after the bike ride (first time I've ever had a KK and I must say it was delicious) --

And then headed towards the coast. Saw our first snow since leaving New England, and it was a serious storm, enough to close down the Savannah airport. From the Atlanta newspaper --

It’s been nearly 30 years since Savannah and parts of the Georgia coast saw this much snow, according to Channel 2 Action News.

Bulloch and Effingham counties, which are northwest of Savannah, saw 3.5 inches, Channel 2 meteorologist Brad Nitz said.

Officially, 1.2 inches of snow fell at the Savannah airport.

“That’s sixth place on the all-time snowfall total list and the most since December 23, 1989,” Nitz said. “No. 1 on the list is 3.6 inches on February 8, 1968.”
