11 AM

hike with Gail 1:27:31 [1] 4.88 mi (17:56 / mi) +623ft 16:00 / mi
weight:139lbs

Hawks Road to the Shelburne town line, also with Di. Beautiful day.

4 PM

biking - dark blue bike 13:47 intensity: (5:52 @1) + (6:12 @2) + (1:43 @3) 2.54 mi (5:26 / mi) +164ft 5:07 / mi

Went to chat with another member of the school committee about plans for opening school. Good to help clarify my thinking.

Getting up her driveway was another matter. It's oil and stone, been a while since it was done but there is still loose stone here and there in the travel lanes. And really steep, immediately. Headed up, it was clear within 20 yards I was seriously in too high a gear, in 30 yards that I wasn't going to make it. At least did a graceful dismount.

Coasted back down, downshifted about 3 gears, headed back up. Made it, but not without a struggle. If I lived there and had to do it every day....

biking - dark blue bike 1:01:01 intensity: (48:39 @1) + (9:58 @2) + (1:41 @3) + (43 @4) 12.61 mi (4:50 / mi) +270ft 4:45 / mi
ahr:96 max:153 weight:139lbs

With Gail to the end of South Ferry Road and back. Plus once up Claybrook, with gusto.

5 PM

Note

A little upper body work dealing with vegetation that suddenly wasn't where it was supposed to be. We were first on the scene. The main branch was across the road, but it looked like a lane could be opened with the proper use of leverage. And as it turned out, it could. The next guy to arrive hopped out to help, but by then I had it mostly done.

Charlie, of course, could have done it with one hand tied behind his back.

biking - dark blue bike 1:35:25 intensity: (1:32 @1) + (48:05 @2) + (36:58 @3) + (7:26 @4) + (1:24 @5) 24.32 mi (3:55 / mi) +850ft 3:48 / mi
ahr:129 max:164 weight:138.5lbs

Stayed down in the valley, but a route that picked up a few hills. Worked hard on those, 10-15 minutes, legs felt OK, rest was just turning over the pedals. But now I'm feeling weary.

biking - dark blue bike 42:23 intensity: (1:35 @1) + (30:42 @2) + (9:58 @3) + (8 @4) 11.14 mi (3:48 / mi) +90ft 3:47 / mi
ahr:120 max:155 weight:139lbs

Flats south of town. About 85 and very humid, but also overcast and a breeze from the west, so fine. But no desire for a longer outing.

1 PM

hike with Gail 1:28:22 [1] 3.84 mi (23:01 / mi) +738ft 19:28 / mi

Southwest side of Mt. Toby. Checked out the Sunbowl, plus a couple of other pieces of trail I'd never been on. :-)

Sometimes hilly, sometimes rocky, sometimes both.

Note

Sometimes things seem surprisingly large, other times way too small. On the large size was this thing, I presume a fungus? Almost look like a wood carving. Maybe 15 inches across.

And then there was this little guy, heading into the maze for a little practice. I saw some movement, still took a while to locate it.

And a closer view. No bigger in any dimension than a quarter.

ahr:139 max:163 weight:139lbs

With Phil, a loop I've done several times before -- Northfield, Warwick, Wendell, and back home. Didn't have good legs today, so it was a struggle. Pretty low on gas by the end of the climb up to Wendell, and certainly running on fumes the last few miles. One of those days. Was 90F by the time we finished, so that certainly didn't help.

But good company, and good to have done it.

ahr:113 max:152 weight:139lbs

North Amherst via Bull Hill Road, back via 116. Made it up the hill on BHR out of the saddle the whole way (all of a minute and a half). Very slowly getting better at that.

2 PM

hike with Gail 1:10:30 [1] 4.03 mi (17:29 / mi) +300ft 16:20 / mi

Hemenway Road up to near the top of Rattlesnake Gutter.

4 PM

road running 1:01 [2] 0.1 mi (10:10 / mi) +4ft 9:48 / mi

Just to remember how it feels.

Plus, when you get old, you really need three trainings a day to stay in shape.

ahr:118 max:162 weight:139lbs

One hard effort, all of two minutes, up Hillside Road. That seemed enough.

hike with Gail 1:17:03 [1] 4.01 mi (19:13 / mi) +431ft 17:27 / mi

North Mountain Road, Sugar trail. Warm and muggy, glad to have blue hats.

5 PM

biking - dark blue bike 42:05 intensity: (2:18 @1) + (31:09 @2) + (8:38 @3) 11.14 mi (3:47 / mi) +89ft 3:45 / mi
ahr:116 max:145

Flats south of town, breeze from the WNW. Quartering/helping on the way out so a mellow effort. Quartering/hurting on the way back (though definitely some protection from the trees), working harder. Legs felt fine. About 90F, dew point mid to upper 60s. Tolerable for a short ride because there's always a breeze.

6 PM

Note

From a couple of days ago, a Yellow-billed Cuckoo and a Yellow Swallowtail. See the latter a lot, the former rarely (though I hear it cooing on occasion). Swallowtail seems to be a male.

Sunday Jul 19, 2020 #

8 AM

biking - dark blue bike 1:04:10 intensity: (1:12 @1) + (46:05 @2) + (15:37 @3) + (1:16 @4) 16.45 mi (3:54 / mi) +506ft 3:47 / mi
ahr:123 max:155 weight:139lbs

Overslept, so didn't get out as early as I meant too. But still early enough that it hadn't gotten real hot. Actually rather pleasant. Gently rolling, worked hard on all the ups, that seemed more than enough ambition for the day.

Up into the hills with the plan being another go at Kingsley Hill Road, about the steepest road around these parts. I'd done it when I was young (three years ago). I figured there wasn't any point driving a bunch to do Lincoln Gap if I couldn't make it up KH.

A pleasant morning, about 70, overcast, somewhat humid. Certainly good for this time of year, so I headed off. Parked where the road splits, one fork following the Deerfield River up to the tiny town of Monroe Bridge and the start of KH, the other going to Rowe and a possible way back if I was feeling energetic.

Ten miles to Monroe Bridge, along the river but definitely not flat. I could tell on the first hill that my legs weren't good. But sometimes things improve after I get a few miles done. So the plan was still KH, then a short loop back to Monroe Bridge to avoid coming straight back down KH, and then the option of doing Monroe Hill Road and looping back through Rowe. The only decision so far was that going really slow up KH was OK, the goal was just to not get off the bike.

Got to Monroe Bridge, turned onto the climb. The first 50 yards are pretty flat. Started downshifting. The next 50 yards are pretty steep. Finished my downshifting, all the way to the lowest gear. Except it didn't feel right. By now I was on the main climb, brutal, and it felt like I was still in second gear. And I sort of hoped I was, because as I looked up the slope, it was pretty clear that if I really was in first gear, then I probably wasn't going to make it.

There was one old driveway just ahead, last bit of civilization. It didn't take but a moment to decide to bail. Turned in, got off the bike, yup, second gear. But the shifter wouldn't go any farther.

Got back on, back to the bottom. Fiddled with the derailleur, still not right. Finally grabbed the chain and with a bit of brute force got it on the big ring in the back. Tried it out, not making any noise, so I figured I was good to go. Headed back up. In retrospect, funny how it never occurred to me to just bag it, not my day. I guess I just had in mind to do it.

It certainly isn't easy, but at least it felt doable, just keep turning the pedals over and try not to fall off. It's paved, but it's ratty pavement, though that's still a lot better than dirt.

The first 8 or 9 minutes are the worst, average about 20%, then you get some variation, little bits where the slope eases, Still have to pay attention on the steep parts. And then eventually the top comes, 21:39, about a minute slower than 3 years ago. Given how I felt, no complaints.

Did the loop around, into Vermont for a couple of miles and then back to Monroe Bridge. Thought about Monroe Hill Road, just didn't have the desire. As it was, the road back down along the Deerfield River still had a lot of ups, and my legs, warmed up as they surely were, still didn't have any zip.

This profile seems reasonably accurate --

2 PM

hike with Gail 1:23:27 [1] 4.34 mi (19:14 / mi) +393ft 17:42 / mi

Pine Nook Road, then up to top of ridge.

ahr:125 max:162 weight:141lbs

Felt better than expected. Moderate effort with the exception of a short hard effort up Randall Road. Light breeze from the north, upper 70s, felt rather pleasant.

Monday Jul 13, 2020 #

Note

Late last week I passed the 3-year anniversary with my gravel bike (Specialized Diverge). 13,400 miles, 590,000' climb. The bike is still hanging in there, as I suppose am I.

3 PM

biking - dark blue bike 44:01 intensity: (32:35 @1) + (11:26 @2) 9.92 mi (4:26 / mi) +162ft 4:22 / mi
ahr:96 max:110 weight:140.5lbs

With Gail, up along the river to the north. Tired after yesterday, and this was just the right pace.

Sunday Jul 12, 2020 #

10 AM

biking - dark blue bike 3:21:00 intensity: (34 @1) + (1:20:05 @2) + (1:51:13 @3) + (9:08 @4) 45.87 mi (4:23 / mi) +2989ft 4:08 / mi
ahr:132 max:156 weight:141lbs

With Phil from his place, up the the hills with maybe 6 miles on dirt. Legs felt (a lot) better than last Sunday. The couple of times they started to feel less good I ate and drank a little more and in a little bit they would feel better. Warm and humid, breeze generally from the SW but very variable.

Never have figured out why some days you feel good and others you feel bad. Just have to be happy there are still at least the occasional good ones.

4 PM

hike with Gail 1:28:10 [1] 4.0 mi (22:02 / mi) +822ft 18:27 / mi

Summiting! Bull Hill via South Mountain and the Robert Frost. Warm and humid, but got some breeze up on the ridge which was much appreciated.

Good to get out after sitting around most of the day.

Saturday Jul 11, 2020 #

Note

A nice-looking guy hanging out at our house. Actually, I believe it's a lady.

12 PM

biking - dark blue bike 49:44 intensity: (45:33 @1) + (4:11 @2) 11.05 mi (4:30 / mi) +94ft 4:28 / mi
ahr:93 max:116 weight:140lbs

With Gail, south of town. Good breeze from the south, so coming back was a lot easier.

Friday Jul 10, 2020 #

9 AM

biking - dark blue bike 42:08 [2] 11.1 mi (3:48 / mi) +75ft 3:46 / mi
ahr:115 max:135 weight:140lbs

Flats south of town. Just right. Got to rest up for getting trashed again by Phil on Sunday.

11 AM

hike with Gail 1:38:16 [1] 4.78 mi (20:35 / mi) +586ft 18:26 / mi

With Di too. From top of Claybrook, bike trail going up, then up the power line. Back via Middle Mt., Muck cut-off and North Mt. Warm, very humid, and very enjoyable.

Thursday Jul 9, 2020 #

Note

I was late getting out for a ride because I spent most of the morning out with the camera and binoculars.

I generally see quite a few turtles, most commonly sunning themselves on a log in a pond, but I've never paid much attention to them except for Snapping Turtles. Today there were only a couple of turtles around, but I decided I should learn a little something about turtles. So, with the help of a guide, I'm pretty sure this guy is an Eastern Painted Turtle. Supposed to be common.

Also out and about were some young Wood Ducks and a Green Heron, the latter always one of my favorites.

11 AM

biking - dark blue bike 1:06:46 intensity: (21:28 @1) + (45:18 @2) 15.24 mi (4:23 / mi) +217ft 4:19 / mi
ahr:102 max:113 weight:140lbs

Ride with Gail (virtually). Hot and humid. Decided the best way to take it easy was to keep my pulse about where it is when we ride together. Almost succeeded (was aiming for a max of 110). Made the ride much more tolerable, even though at the end I was very happy not to be going any farther.

9 AM

biking - dark blue bike 45:21 intensity: (1:05 @1) + (39:32 @2) + (4:27 @3) + (17 @4) 11.76 mi (3:51 / mi) +306ft 3:46 / mi
ahr:118 max:152 weight:140lbs

Morning ride, South Deerfield, mostly flat, breeze from the south.

12 PM

hike with Gail 1:16:56 [1] 3.7 mi (20:47 / mi) +615ft 17:58 / mi

North Mountain Road on Mt. Toby. Climbed higher than we usually do, last 0.4 mile was steep and rocky.

The highlight was clearly this guy, Mr. (or Ms.) Black Rat Snake. Seemed to be about 6' long. Haven't seen one for a long time, but had one hanging around the house (and up on the deck) for a while back in the 80s.

Tuesday Jul 7, 2020 #

10 AM

biking - dark blue bike 58:56 intensity: (1:10 @1) + (31:28 @2) + (16:10 @3) + (9:41 @4) + (27 @5) 12.58 mi (4:41 / mi) +1184ft 4:18 / mi
ahr:129 max:164 weight:139.5lbs

Picked up my bike at the shop (getting a new chain) and figured I might as well ride from there, and if I was going to ride from there obviously I ought to go up Mt. Holyoke. Next step in hill training in preparation for Lincoln Gap (which, realistically, may never happen, but then again it might). Mt. Holyoke has one short steep part (18%?). The overall is nothing special, averages about 7 or 8%.

A nice ride over to warm up, with a good headwind to keep me cool, so I turned off 47, started my watch, and headed up with no delay. And also with no desire for a hard effort, keep the pulse in the 150s instead of the 160s.

The steep part seemed no problem, though I was thinking at that moment that 25 to 30 minutes on such a grade, or maybe a little steeper, might not be a whole lot of fun. But this one passed quickly and before long I was at the top. 19:51 to the end of the parking lot. Done it twice before, 19:15 and 18:38, so the decay is not too bad.

And then the real pleasure. The road has been repaved since I was last there. I'm sure it helped on the way up. It was really nice on the way down, even though, with a bunch of sharp curves I was on the brakes most of the time. Let it go on the steep section because it was straight, but there was a 90-degree turn right after. The disc brakes are sweet.

Next hill to try should probably be Monroe Hill Road. That one is definitely harder, but still has spots to recover.

3 PM

biking - dark blue bike 44:51 intensity: (8:15 @1) + (36:36 @2) 9.93 mi (4:31 / mi) +31ft 4:30 / mi

With Walter. Relaxed ride, really nice. Though my legs were certainly absent.

3 PM

biking - dark blue bike 40:56 intensity: (18:10 @1) + (22:46 @2) 8.93 mi (4:35 / mi) +83ft 4:33 / mi
ahr:100 max:116

With Gail, out Falls Road. Hot, but not so humid and a breeze out of the NW. So pretty nice. Except I was running out of gas before we were home. Certainly glad we hadn't gone any farther.

Gail seems to be managing pretty well on the bike, busted shoulder and all. But then she's been doing her exercises regularly. It won't be as good as it was, but it's gotten a whole lot better.

In the hills with Phil. Struggling on the uphills the whole time. Warm and muggy, actually quite enjoyed the rain the last 10-15 minutes, pretty hard by the end. Certainly cooled things off.

But the hills.... :-(

36:45 up East Hawley Road.

4 PM

hike with Gail 1:07:51 [1] 4.02 mi (16:54 / mi) +133ft 16:23 / mi

Sand Gully and Hoosac Roads.

Second training of the day. I'd requested something rather flat, to give me some chance of doing it. Managed OK, but now the legs are really trashed.

biking - dark blue bike 45:50 intensity: (12:12 @1) + (33:38 @2) 9.94 mi (4:37 / mi) +150ft 4:33 / mi
ahr:103 max:118 weight:140lbs

With Gail, managed to get out (and back) before the storms moved in. :-)

Slowly increasing her rides. I'm sure she'd be doing more if we didn't have the hikes as well, and the hikes are probably better for her bones.

Thursday Jul 2, 2020 #

11 AM

hike with Gail 1:20:31 [1] 4.25 mi (18:57 / mi) +564ft 16:50 / mi
weight:141lbs

New England Trail (formerly the M&M) south from Prescott Road in Shutesbury. With Di, we missed one turn while we were chatting away. Nice trail, mostly somewhat overgrown old Quabbin road, part hiking trail.

Had it to ourselves.

5 PM

biking - dark blue bike 47:47 intensity: (2:06 @1) + (36:57 @2) + (8:44 @3) 12.6 mi (3:48 / mi) +180ft 3:44 / mi
ahr:120 max:150

Late afternoon ride, warm (85) and muggy. Put out more effort than planned, by the last 15 minutes I was feeling rather feeble.

Wednesday Jul 1, 2020 #

10 AM

biking - dark blue bike 48:51 intensity: (2:12 @1) + (30:59 @2) + (12:46 @3) + (2:54 @4) 10.0 mi (4:53 / mi) +768ft 4:33 / mi
ahr:122 max:156 weight:140.5lbs

A perfect Valerie (at least ten miles, but no more), though on second thought, a perfect Valerie would not have any uphills, so this ride surely doesn't qualify.

On the other hand, it was just the right way to start my Lincoln Gap training -- steady effort, keep the heart rate under control. 10:45 up Sugarloaf. Lincoln Gap will take 25-30 minutes, if I can stay on the bike.
