biking - dark blue bike 1:35:03 intensity: (2:06 @1) + (52:34 @2) + (38:00 @3) + (2:23 @4) 16.02 mi (5:56 / mi) +1089ft 5:34 / mi
ahr:126 max:159 weight:137.5lbs

About 4.5 miles of serious mountain bike mode up on Mt. Toby. First mile or so was OK, then it just got more eroded and more rocks and roots and more mud. Off the bike about 6 times to deal with fallen logs and such, plus one time unintended (but seems like no harm done). At this point, just too hard.

And then a good effort when back on the pavement, especially the short steep climb on Long Hill Road.

ahr:104 max:126 weight:137.5lbs

With Gail, across the river to South Deerfield and Whately. Legs were tired from yesterday, so this was just right.

biking - dark blue bike 2:02:26 intensity: (24 @1) + (20:55 @2) + (1:38:45 @3) + (2:22 @4) 25.65 mi (4:46 / mi) +2048ft 4:26 / mi
ahr:137 max:154 weight:137.5lbs

A route Phil did maybe a month ago, said it was on the Northampton Cycle Club web page. So it was. Nothing I hadn't been on before, but it seemed like a nice route, interesting but nothing really hard.

And so it was. Had a good ride, helped by cooler weather (low to mid 70s, dewpoint about 60). Minimal traffic. Put out a decent effort but not really pushing. And certainly enjoying my better eyesight on the downhills on the dirt, didn't hit a single pothole. :-)

ahr:104 max:119 weight:137.5lbs

With Gail. To the north, loop past the Turners Falls airport. Low 70s, overcast, lower humidity, dare it say it, felt cool.

biking - dark blue bike 1:39:30 intensity: (2:20 @1) + (40:38 @2) + (53:13 @3) + (3:19 @4) 20.34 mi (4:53 / mi) +1069ft 4:40 / mi
ahr:130 max:155 weight:137.5lbs

Tired when I got up this morning, tired when I started, not surprised that it didn't get any better. Took a long time to get up Whately Glen, lots of mud to be (mostly) avoided, but then after that there wasn't much climbing left. And I never ran out of low enough gears, so there was at least that. Oh, well, got it done.

Cooler weather coming. :-)

ahr:102 max:119 weight:138lbs

With Gail, same as a couple of days ago, to the power canal in Greenfield. Another warm day, certainly better getting out in the morning.

biking - dark blue bike 1:54:18 intensity: (2:23 @1) + (50:42 @2) + (58:34 @3) + (2:39 @4) 24.38 mi (4:41 / mi) +1600ft 4:25 / mi
ahr:128 max:156 weight:138lbs

Up in the hills in Leverett and Montague. The highlight was Rattlesnake Gutter in the up direction, nice climb with the challenge of an erosion gully for several hundred yards that snaked its way down, sometimes in the middle of the "road" and sometimes over to one edge or the other. Quite pleased to have managed it all.

Warm and humid, as usual. And lower right leg continuing to be a problem, as usual.

biking - dark blue bike 1:21:13 intensity: (20:09 @1) + (1:01:04 @2) 18.46 mi (4:24 / mi) +580ft 4:16 / mi
ahr:104 max:123 weight:138lbs

With Gail, to Turners Falls to have a look at the partially drain power canal (to allow some maintenance on the sidewalls). Going along at a nice pace.

ahr:130 max:159 weight:138.5lbs

Loop around through Old Deerfield. Getting out before Henri arrives, assuming it hasn't faded away before it gets here. Modest NE breeze.

ahr:107 max:138 weight:138lbs

With Gail, corn ride to Old Deerfield. Continued warm and humid, seems like until late next week. Just when I'm getting used to it.

biking - dark blue bike 1:08:13 intensity: (4:49 @1) + (1:00:58 @2) + (2:26 @3) 16.83 mi (4:03 / mi) +390ft 3:58 / mi
ahr:113 max:145 weight:138lbs

Corn ride, with a small detour to check out the staging area for tomorrow's D2R2. Less of a production than usual, just as good as the fields looked really wet. And glad I'm not riding in it tomorrow.

Warm and humid. I was feeling rather feeble, so eventually I pulled out a Cliff Bar (I try to always have one with me, just in case). Had several bites, then stopped for the corn. Figured at that point I would just go real easy heading home. But actually felt a little better. Polished off the rest of the Ciff Bar, felt even better. Didn't have any water left, but seems I needed sugar and not fluids. The last few miles were a delight.

Short ride, roads wet but not enough to kick up a spray. Lots of rain this morning, now just really humid.

In the low hills to the east. Warm and humid.

biking - dark blue bike 1:55:01 intensity: (1:18 @1) + (1:04:17 @2) + (43:12 @3) + (6:14 @4) 24.31 mi (4:44 / mi) +1282ft 4:30 / mi
ahr:127 max:159 weight:138lbs

With Phil, doing the first and last segments of the D2R2 loop he is planning on doing on Saturday. Two moderately crappy dirt sections, the first of which is as hard as anything he'll have Saturday.

Enjoyable outing. My comfort level on the crap is better, so at least on that part I wasn't struggling to keep up. Which is normally the prime consideration. :-)

Back on the pavement he tended to move right along, but I'm getting better at glueing myself to his rear wheel, so even that part was enjoyable.

ahr:111 max:143 weight:138lbs

Another corn ride, trying another new (to us) place. Easy pace, warm and humid but fortunately there was cloud cover for all but the last few minutes.

biking - dark blue bike 1:16:44 intensity: (4:44 @1) + (1:03:07 @2) + (8:53 @3) 18.85 mi (4:04 / mi) +690ft 3:56 / mi
ahr:117 max:147

Loop on both sides of the river. Got out early enough that it was very pleasant, about 70, low clouds, and a little bit of fog. And no sun until I was just about done. Be needing the arm warmers pretty soon. :-)

ahr:131 max:153 weight:138.5lbs

Lake Wyola and Shutesbury loop. Low 80s, dewpoint low 70s. A lot better than it will be this afternoon.

Managed OK, moderate pace was fine, trying to go any faster would not have been fun.

With Gail, north. Humid but cool.

biking - dark blue bike 1:16:19 intensity: (54 @1) + (1:01:36 @2) + (12:53 @3) + (56 @4) 18.92 mi (4:02 / mi) +560ft 3:55 / mi
ahr:120 max:153 weight:139lbs

North up this side of the river, the rail-trail bridge, south down the other side, the Sunderland bridge. Almost all minimal traffic, and now that North Main Street has a base coat of pavement down, that part is just fine too. Medium effort, certainly not wanting to do any harder. And better these days, it seems at sticking to my intentions.

ahr:134 max:154 weight:138.5lbs

The same loop as last week with Walter, Ceil, and Bill, except starting at the Conway school, so a couple of miles shorter. Still had the hills.

I'd felt distressingly tired on that ride, so I was curious to see if another day might be better. And I suppose it was, about 7 minutes quicker. But the uphills are still uphill. Still, pleased with the outing, both for actually getting out and doing it and for not feeling so bad.

Warm but tolerable. Drank half a bottle.

ahr:97 max:115 weight:138.5lbs

With Gail, to the north.

No corn ride today. I am still in shock. The corn purchased yesterday from Thomas Farm and Dairy was the worst corn I can remember having. One bite, and most of that was spit out. Just atrocious. You can easily tell the difference if corn has not been picked that day, but I can't recall any experience with how corn tastes if it hasn't been picked that week.

I suppose it's possible it was feed corn, not sweet corn?

6 PM

biking - dark blue bike 11:43 intensity: (5:45 @1) + (5:58 @2) 2.69 mi (4:21 / mi) +38ft 4:18 / mi

To Mike's for some bread.

ahr:116 max:147 weight:138lbs

Corn ride, version 5, Thomas Farm and Dairy. You would think from looking at the map that the only hill would be coming back up our driveway, but the bike had other ideas.

Putting out as little effort as possible.

biking - dark blue bike 1:54:58 intensity: (2:23 @1) + (1:21:17 @2) + (31:18 @3) 24.34 mi (4:43 / mi) +1354ft 4:29 / mi
ahr:122 max:147 weight:138lbs

Corn ride version 4, Bar-Way's farm stand, after doing Old Albany and Hawks, both with some ruts and lots of loose sand and gravel. Crossing one rut, going uphill so very slowly, it flipped my tire differently than expected, managed to unclip and get a foot down and thereby avoided seeing what it might be like to hit an electric fence. Just as happy to miss out on that experience. Still, should have picked a better line. Out of practice.

ahr:118 max:152 weight:138lbs

Corn ride version 3. It's that time of year, and you have to get it freshly picked.

It's also the time of year when it's usually unpleasantly hot and humid, but we've had a good spell, highs in the 70s, lows at night in the 50s. Still supposed to have a couple more days before it gets warmer. Enjoy it while I can.

ahr:122 max:152 weight:137.5lbs

Another corn ride, different direction. Wind from the northwest, so once again an easy ride home.

biking - dark blue bike 1:17:44 intensity: (1:06 @1) + (34:50 @2) + (41:42 @3) + (6 @4) 19.61 mi (3:58 / mi) +671ft 3:50 / mi
ahr:129 max:151 weight:138lbs

A corn ride, to JJ's in Hadley, southernmost point on my route. Obviously not taking the most direct route to get there. Though I was on the way home, enjoying a tailwind all the way.

Took 96 seconds to procure the corn, and my method is to stop my watch a few seconds before the bike stops, and then at the end restart it after I clip in and am moving. So maybe 75 seconds for procure the corn, most of which was selecting the proper ears, especially wanting ones with minimal stalk below the ears (so they're less likely to fall out of my shirt pocket). The process is self-serve, dollar bill in the lock-box, take the corn, and go. And don't need a mask, at least not yet.

Decent effort.
