| Same loop as a couple of days ago, working hard and going even slower. Knee still sore, though it moves around a bit, which I will assume is good. Hopefully one of these days it will feel a little better.
The nautilus stuff has felt ok, though I'm not sure what good it is doing me.

| Today's tax story is not amusing or uplifting or horrifying or particularly interesting. But, as I've said before, it's my log and I can write what I want to....
A guy today, came in with his wife, they've been clients for a bunch of years though this was the first time the wife had come along, I think she was just curious. He drives a truck for a local fuel oil company, also gets called out in the middle of the night to repair heating systems, type of guy those of us who sit behind desks take for granted, and also depend upon. We're going though his numbers, seeing what the possibilities are, and I point out that his income is down from the year before, less overtime I assume. Yeah, he said, but part of the reason for that is he was out for a while when he was operated on. What for, I asked. My prostate, he said. So we put aside the tax papers and spent the next half hour talking about all that he had been through, his wife also an active participant in the discussion -- which doctors he'd seen and what he thought of them, the various steps along the way both pre- and post-operation. A good and very open talk, maybe here it is an advantage to being a taxman and feeling that it is ok to ask about just about anything. I guess this is just a step in the learning process, talking and reading, eventually making decisions, maybe sooner, maybe later. I can't say I like any of it. I have always been one who, if I needed to buy something, bought the first thing I saw that seemed to meet the need (if the pants fit, get them, no need to look at 10 other pairs just to see if one might fit a little better). In this case, however, I know I need to get educated. I just don't really look forward to the prospect. And the process of getting educated is not exactly fun, because you are reminded at every step of the way what the possibilities are. As opposed to, say, the process of deciding which O' meet to go to, where all of the possibilities would be appealing. But it has to be done. And so I may put things in this log from time to time as a way of forcing myself to deal with this, unpleasant as it is. And there has already been an upside, a couple of good e-mails from AP readers who have already been down this road. Thank you. The truck driver, by the way, says he is doing very well. His wife concurs. And that was nice to see.

| Glad I wasn't planning on a run, as there was a mix of sleet and freezing rain and then heavy rain. Better tomorrow I hope.
So the Feb. 1 goal for the G of 139 was missed. Just too much muscle....

| With Dave, Lovers Lane loop from the office. Usual aches.
Good and useful conversation the whole way. I had a not so good PSA number at my recent blood test, probably the start of a journey I don't look forward to taking, one that Dave has been down in the last 3 or 4 years. (Despite that, he is running better then in many years.) A reminder, if one is needed, of the value of friends.

| Tax season is in full swing and with it comes my exposure to a broad range of humanity. My favorite today was a woman who I first got as a client several years ago, did her and her husband and their 6 kids. At some point a year or so later I was reading in the local paper about a big drug bust and was scanning the list of who they had grabbed, and there was her husband, the name was unusual enough that there was no doubt.
So a few months later she showed up for the tax appointment. In this business you get used to asking questions that one might not ask in polite society, all for tax purposes of course. Yup, her husband was still locked up, and no, she sure wasn't defending him ("not the man I thought I knew!"). And she's been on her own since then, trying to work full time and also raise the kids. Last year she wasn't making much, didn't want to come see me because she couldn't afford to pay me, but a very good friend of hers is also a client of mine, so I passed along a message to come see me anyway and I wouldn't charge her. I knew she would get a good refund, earned income credit, and I didn't want her to mess up doing it herself. Earlier this week I saw the friend. Make sure Kristie comes back, I told her. Kristie came in this evening, bearing some cookies as a gift. She's doing better, now earning 20k, still raising 6 kids. We're done, she's getting a big refund, she asks what the fee is. I tell her it's double what I charged last year. It takes a moment for that to register and then she starts to object. Listen, I said, the time will come when you are doing better, and then I will definitely charge you, but right now you are not quite there yet. She's a nice person and deserves a little help. And this, trivial as it was, put a big smile on her face. And on mine too.

| Usual stuff. Knee felt sore today, even though it wasn't bad on yesterday's run, nor after. Try again tomorrow. | ||

| In Greenfield up on the ridge. Trails were packed out well, just a little rough footing and a bit icy, might get a lot more icy after tonight if we get rain as predicted. But it was real nice to get out and do the 40 minutes I planned. Could certainly feel the hills. Knee was not bad, though a little sorer afterwards. | ||

| The A set of machines afterwards, plus a little time on the foam roller for the quads and backs of the legs. On the quads it is especially painful, though the last couple of trips up and down weren't as bad. | ||

| Up to the power line via 47 and Claybrook because the back trail isn't runnable, at least not by someone in my condition. North Mountain was mostly ok, well packed snow, except for a few places that were sheet ice covered by the light dusting of new snow. Could manage on the way up, on the way down I got smart and went in the woods.
Nice to get out and off the roads, but my body sure isn't used to it. Breathing too hard for the pace.
