treadmill 48:22 intensity: (3:26 @1) + (9:57 @2) + (34:59 @3) 5.0 mi (9:40 / mi) +787ft 8:25 / mi
ahr:131 max:143 rhr:50 shoes: pegasus

Raining pretty hard outside and neither JJ nor I was interested in running outside, so he took off (though not before presenting me with some chocolate chip cookies to fatten me) and I headed for the treadmill.

A mile to wam-up up, then 3 miles at 6 mph and 5%, then another mile flat. Sweating a lot but it didn't feel hard and heart rate stayed pretty low. Which I think is good? I assume it's better to be able to do a specific workout with as low a heart rate as possible?

Car Talk. Pleasant but forgettable.

trail running 5:00 [3] 0.5 mi (10:00 / mi)
rhr:47 weight:133.5lbs shoes: pegasus

A little warm-up. Definitely felt better after this, 10 minutes would have been better.

orienteering 1:28:21 intensity: (18 @1) + (1:58 @2) + (1:18:39 @3) + (7:26 @4) 6.32 mi (13:59 / mi) +961ft 12:13 / mi

CSU local meet at Rocky Woods. Decent run, one scalp.

More later, but now off to Litchfield....

The map, with the Red course.

The map from 1977, last time I was here.

And today's route. Only lapse was to 15, got down the hill and wasn't at all where I intended to be. Rest was OK.

Mood: Oops again, still going the wrong direction. Need to show a little more discipline. But at least the running has been hanging in there.

12 PM

trail running 57:26 intensity: (1:03 @1) + (19:24 @2) + (35:58 @3) + (1:01 @4) 5.94 mi (9:41 / mi) +971ft 8:23 / mi

Usual loop, just a little ice now so just about perfect. Nice run, very relaxed pace, trying to get up the hills without working hard. Given the effort, time was not bad.

Will probably head over to the Boston area for the CSU meet at Rocky Woods. I think I was there once in the late 70s, old black and white map. Might have to try and find it.

treadmill 55:16 intensity: (3:17 @1) + (16:12 @2) + (23:54 @3) + (11:53 @4) 6.0 mi (9:13 / mi) +919ft 8:03 / mi
ahr:133 max:165 rhr:48 weight:134lbs shoes: pegasus

Got just enough snow to make the trails a little sloppy, so time for a little uphill on the treadmill. All at about 9-minute pace, a mile at 1%, then one at 2%, one at 3%, one at 4%, one at 5%, half a mile at 6% and that was enough, finished with a half mile flat. Sweated a whole lot.

Now Mt. Washington is an average of about 12%, but then 13 or 14 minutes a mile would be just fine. So I'm not sure how relevent today's workout is. But I just wasn't up to setting the grade at 12%.

A Fresh Air interview about an HBO series The Big Love, never seen it or even heard of it, about a polygamous family, just ended a five year run. Quite an interesting interview. I wonder from time to time if I should get HBO, never have.

ahr:134 max:155 rhr:49 weight:133lbs shoes: pegasus

On the usual trails, before the snowstorm predicted for tonight. It would be nice if that fizzled away. Although this time of year even a foot can melt away in a couple of days.

Anyway, very nice run, legs felt good, no falls, no dogs.

Fresh Air, about Italian cooking, then a short section about some music stuff that was all beyond me, then a short interview with a Canadian doctor who had spent time in Afghanistan. Enjoyed the first and thrird segments.

ahr:136 max:154 rhr:49 weight:133.3lbs shoes: pegasus

Beautiful day, sunny, mid-50s. On the ridge, relaxed pace as I was going a little longer. Just fine except for one fall, got both knees and both hands but no real damage other than to the pride.

The upside of a longer run is being able to get just about all the way through two Fresh Air interviews. The first, with Dan Savage and his husband and about bullying of gay kids, was excellent. As was the second, though it was entirely different, with a journalist about current events in the arab world.

Nice to get in a good run on fine terrain and learn a little something in the process.

13 hills loop, harder effort. Just a little bit of ice left. Doesn't seem to take much for the legs to get wobbly.

Entertainment from a This American Life story about the Georgia "justice" system, or at least one small part of it. Both interesting and appalling.
