George said there was a 10-miler in Norfolk, CT, this Saturday and suggested I try it, not that far from Litchfield. Fine, except for the timing, went to Litchfield today. But, having looked up info on the race, and its route, it seemed like a reasonable idea to go run it this afternoon on my way home.

And it would have been a reasonable idea if I had just had a bit of energy in the legs. But they were dead as can be. Or so it seemed.

Croaked for real on the climb from 7 to 8 (which really isn't much of a climb), had to walk several times. Though it did offer the advantage of removing any need (for ego reasons) to run up the short steep hill at 9.5. Walked the steepest bit of it quite happily.

But still a good outing. Saw a bit of new territory. A beautiful day. A short visit to the library in town just to check it out. And a couple of good podcasts to listen to. Not so bad.

Except I seem to have Dave showing up at 8 in the morning to run. It will be slow.

At the Smith indoor track with Phil. Very pleasant -- good company and we had the track to ourselves. Legs were a little heavy from yesterday, but not unreasonably so.

track 7:42 intensity: (32 @2) + (2:38 @3) + (4:32 @4) 1.6 km (4:49 / km)
ahr:147 max:155 shoes: pegasus 5

A rather lassez-faire track session -- no grand plan, just do something and then decide what (and if) you want to do something else. Made it nicely low stress.

So first off was a suggested 1600, a little bit faster than current 5K pace (that being about 7:50 for me and 7:40 for Phil).

track 7:37 intensity: (20 @2) + (1:15 @3) + (6:02 @4) 1.6 km (4:46 / km)
ahr:151 max:159 shoes: pegasus 5

And after a Phil-style recovery (a leisurely amble around the track), the feeling was, why not do another. So we did.

track 3:41 intensity: (16 @2) + (53 @3) + (2:32 @4) 0.8 km (4:36 / km)
ahr:150 max:158 shoes: pegasus 5

And then, being the intelligent folks that we are, an 800 seemed to make much more sense for part 3. And having done that, our intelligence was once again on display, as we determined there was no need for part 4. A fine workout.

track 13:31 intensity: (33 @2) + (12:58 @3) 2.4 km (5:38 / km)
ahr:142 max:149 shoes: pegasus 5

And a little slower at the end to match the little slower at the start.

ahr:141 max:155 rhr:55 weight:139lbs shoes: pegasus 5

Some roads in Pelham I hadn't run on for a long time, but still pretty much the same. A long up, a long down. Felt OK on the way up, especially the last bit, whereas the way down seemed hard, legs were quite tired the last mile or two. Of course if I'd done the down first....

Important to put in a decent effort today as tomorrow a run at the track with Phil is scheduled, and I want to make sure he has more energy than I do. Wouldn't be good for his ego otherwise. Mission accomplished.

road running 46:50 intensity: (20 @1) + (7:37 @2) + (33:21 @3) + (5:32 @4) 5.1 mi (9:11 / mi) +361ft 8:36 / mi
ahr:142 max:157 rhr:54 weight:139lbs shoes: pegasus 5

Back roads in Deerfield and Conway, one hill (Hoosac Road). Tried legs to start, but they actually felt better as I made my way up Hoosac Road. A pleasant surprise.

Went to Bridge of Spies last night, third movie in a month after a year or two without any. The other two were Spotlight and Brooklyn. Nice that there are some decent films around, not everything geared to the immature set. And there were even a couple more that we would been happy seeing (Chi-raq and Trumbo). Maybe it's the time of year, studios getting their Oscar candidates out. Whatever, we've enjoyed them.

ahr:138 max:159 weight:139lbs shoes: pegasus 5

Down to Forest Park again, same routine, this time a 10K. Beautiful morning, low 40s and getting warmer, shorts and a t-shirt. :-)

road running race 51:12 intensity: (24 @2) + (10:39 @3) + (31:01 @4) + (9:08 @5) 6.31 mi (8:07 / mi) +237ft 7:50 / mi
ahr:157 max:163 shoes: pegasus 5

Both satisfying and depressing. The former because I put out a good effort and felt like I was doing OK. The latter because the watch keeps going faster and faster, with the change in the last year or two accelerating quite rapidly. But the former still trumps the latter by a long shot. Being able to do something still beats being able to do nothing.

Figured I should do just under 51 based on last week's 5K time, and I would have, except when I reached 6.21 miles on my watch, the finish was still 150 yards away. So I guess the pace I thought I was going, well, it was just a bit slower. Still an OK run.

10 AM

road running 30:42 intensity: (10 @1) + (7:17 @2) + (20:33 @3) + (2:42 @4) 3.2 mi (9:36 / mi) +124ft 9:15 / mi
ahr:138 max:153 shoes: pegasus 5

And then a round-about way back to the car, trying to do enough so the day would count for a long run too, so no demands for tomorrow. Legs were pretty tired by the end.

Went home, had something to eat, and then took a nap.... :-)

Note

Spent a very useful hour with a lawyer friend who just happens to specialize in estate planning, long past the time when we should have been updating things. Lots of progress, and feeling much better for having gotten the ball rolling.

ahr:143 max:147 weight:139.5lbs shoes: pegasus 5

Roads in South Deerfield, virtually flat. Had in mind to go longer, but I was feeling sluggish and modified the route a couple of times, shorter each time. Warm out, lower 50s, had too much on and sweating a lot.
