Note

Was over at Quabbin this morning. With the exception of one O' event in the SE corner several years ago, haven't done any orienteering there for a long time. In places the vegetation sure has changed -- red pine plantations dying out, some cutting and regrowth, fewer deer eating the underbrush -- all combining to make the place look a lot less like the wide open place it was. Good forest management, I suppose, but I miss the way it was.

biking - red bike 56:06 intensity: (49 @1) + (6:29 @2) + (44:56 @3) + (3:52 @4) 15.28 mi (3:40 / mi) +604ft 3:32 / mi
ahr:138 max:157

Leverett loop clockwise. Took it easy up the first few hills and then worked a little harder the rest of the way.

biking - red bike 1:17:11 intensity: (54 @1) + (17:20 @2) + (58:15 @3) + (42 @4) 20.33 mi (3:48 / mi) +655ft 3:41 / mi
ahr:135 max:153 weight:140.5lbs

River Road - Deerfield. Seemed like the (gentle) wind was always in my face, though maybe that was all in my mind. In any case, just a modest effort, especially going up the hills. More fun that way.

biking - red bike 31:36 intensity: (1:15 @1) + (20:04 @2) + (7:27 @3) + (2:50 @4) 6.02 mi (5:15 / mi) +663ft 4:45 / mi
ahr:122 max:159 weight:141lbs

Decided to see if I could make it up South Sugarloaf in the new bike (with a double ring in front instead of a triple, but more gears in the back). Seemed about the same, next-to-lowest gear for the first part, then lowest gear for the rest, not dying but not much in reserve either. 10:23 up.

Otherwise, short and mellow ride.

Earlier, got to watch a few of our feathered friends up real close --

biking - red bike 1:35:59 intensity: (53 @1) + (40:19 @2) + (54:47 @3) 26.19 mi (3:40 / mi) +199ft 3:38 / mi
ahr:130 max:146 weight:140.5lbs

Down to the Coolidge Bridge on the east side of the river, back on the west side. The only problem with the route is that a little bit of it is in Northampton, which lived up to its reputation -- bad pavement, and I got yelled at by the usual yahoos that seem to hang out only in Northampton around here.

Westerly breeze, so a crosswind most of the time. Good steady pace, not hard. New bike is nice, soaks up the bumps better, and the 28mm tires are nice, certainly helped when I spent much of Damon Road riding on the dirt shoulder (traffic was mostly standing still). Ah, Northampton, nice town but not for biking.

biking - red bike 58:20 intensity: (1:02 @1) + (7:34 @2) + (37:44 @3) + (12:00 @4) 15.23 mi (3:50 / mi) +683ft 3:40 / mi
ahr:140 max:156 weight:141lbs

Leverett loop, counter-clockwise. Very windy out of the west and cool.

orienteering 2:18:30 intensity: (1:40:31 @1) + (37:59 @2) 3.73 mi (37:08 / mi) +669ft 31:44 / mi
ahr:94 max:124

Back to Pond Mountain to finish up (maybe?) vetting the points for the Long and Middle at the Team Trials. Takes a while, as it always does, including a few minutes doing some map corrections with a Sharpie, because that was all I had... :-)

1 PM

orienteering 41:59 intensity: (14:25 @1) + (27:34 @2) 1.39 mi (30:06 / mi) +435ft 23:14 / mi
ahr:106 max:126

And a couple more points easier reached from a different parking place.

orienteering 28:44 intensity: (6:32 @1) + (22:12 @2) 1.18 mi (24:15 / mi) +251ft 20:12 / mi
ahr:108 max:129

And still a couple more points easier reached from a different parking place.
