biking - red bike 23:10 intensity: (52 @1) + (6:56 @2) + (14:54 @3) + (28 @4) 5.32 mi (4:21 / mi) +237ft 4:11 / mi
ahr:132 max:152 weight:140lbs

I wasn't sure I was going to make it out today, especially after spending a few minutes outside removing branches from the driveway and retrieving a recycling container that had blown across the road. It was quite nippy. But I figured if Valerie could get out in this weather, then I ought to be able to too. :-)

19F, NW 15-20, gusting higher. Really, the only area that complained was my face. But it was a short ride so I figured it could manage, just HTFU.

I was reminded of the last time I had, if not frostbite, at least getting close. A mid-winter run with Fred up in the hills, about -5F, NW wind right in our faces for the first 4 miles. Had various parts of my cheeks and ears peeling a few days later, though no lasting damage to my good looks...

I'd guess XC skiers put up with the stuff all the time.

So anyway, today was really rather mellow.

biking - red bike 47:56 intensity: (50 @1) + (23:54 @2) + (23:12 @3) 12.2 mi (3:56 / mi) +182ft 3:52 / mi
ahr:129 max:148 weight:138.5lbs

33F, W 5-10. Added another layer on top, now 4.5, very toasty, plus dug out a pair of down mittens I must have had for 50 years -- with a thin pair of liners my hands were toasty too. Still need to work on the feet, a bit chilled. But overall excellent. But tomorrow is supposed to be low 20s at best, and stronger winds.

Legs were tired, one of those days, but the route was short and easy and I wasn't pushing it. So not much distress.

ahr:129 max:161 weight:139lbs

37F, S, maybe 5 mph? River Road - Old Deerfield loop. The roads were clear so I figured I better get a decent ride in today as it would offer the best conditions of the week.

Easy effort over the hills going north, then more work coming back south, even a little breeze makes a difference when you're out in the open.

Hands and feet getting a little chilly towards the end, but mostly OK.

South Sugarloaf. A few inches of wet snow. Just to hairpin and back. Left butt/hip very unhappy going up, OK going down.

hike 26:26 intensity: (7:44 @1) + (15:27 @2) + (3:15 @3) 1.68 mi (15:44 / mi) +487ft 12:21 / mi
ahr:111 max:137 weight:138lbs

South Sugarloaf (14:02, 12:24). 16, calm, sunny. Been enjoying these early outings, dial up a podcast (usually Fresh Air). Now if the butt would just get better...

11 AM

mountain biking 55:26 intensity: (1:00 @1) + (31:36 @2) + (20:35 @3) + (2:15 @4) 6.26 mi (8:51 / mi) +811ft 7:53 / mi
ahr:127 max:159

29, S 5. I considered various options for a last ride before the snow comes and opted for the mountain bike, up South Mt (on Mt. Toby) and then, assuming the going was OK, across to and then down North Mt.

Turned out just fine, in fact at one point I remember saying to myself that this was really fun. I'm pretty sure I was going downhill at the time.

Almost made it up South Mt, but had to get off a twice in the last 100 yards. But that's not so bad, it's a 20-minute grind and I was close to making it.

The trail crossing over doesn't get much use (I hadn't been there for a couple of years) and it's getting more and more eroded, glad I was going mostly downhill.

Only downside, besides the hard work climbing, was getting all sweated up, made the downhill chilly, wet shirt and not generating and heat. But it's still fun.

hike 27:31 intensity: (12:03 @1) + (15:28 @2) 1.68 mi (16:23 / mi) +491ft 12:50 / mi
ahr:108 max:130

South Sugarloaf (14:33, 12:58). 16F but no wind, so it felt warmer. Passed on the bear grease.

But my fingers were getting a little cold. Should I fill the gloves with bear grease? My concern is that I would end up with warm but hairy fingers.

2 PM

mountain biking 41:14 intensity: (52 @1) + (22:01 @2) + (18:21 @3) 5.5 mi (7:30 / mi) +558ft 6:51 / mi
ahr:127 max:149

Cold and windy out so I thought the mountain bike might be better. Probably was, but the fingers were still getting cold. 27, NW 10.

Up North Mt. to the power line, haven't been there in a long time. Not much ice, just where there normally are puddles, and there was enough room around the edges to manage without slipping or hitting a tree. Then back via Gunn Mt., Gunn Farm, and Falls Road, the last at least with the wind somewhat helping.

No falls, no close calls, didn't have to get off at all. Pleasantly surprised. I think maybe I have the tires softer than when I rode up there in the past, and that helps.

ahr:111 max:136 weight:139lbs

South Sugarloaf (14:55, 12:18), working harder going up and bare pavement. 30F and a good wind from the NW, real good visibility.

2 PM

biking - red bike 58:30 intensity: (16 @1) + (12:24 @2) + (41:01 @3) + (4:49 @4) 14.51 mi (4:02 / mi) +1021ft 3:47 / mi
ahr:137 max:157

In southern CT, but the bike was in the car and there was enough daylight to get in a ride. 33F, NW 10-15. Cold on the face for the first few miles, a little chilly on the downhills, and a couple of fingers were getting cold just at the end, but overall quite acceptable conditions.

Legs were very tired for the first few miles, debated cutting it short, but better thereafter. Glad to have gotten out.
