Note

Here is another way of viewing today's route (well, it's Walter's route, the handle on the lollipop is the extra bit he did to get to and from from his house to our meeting place in Conway).

9 AM

biking - dark blue bike 3:41:28 intensity: (37 @1) + (1:31:39 @2) + (1:53:18 @3) + (13:54 @4) + (2:00 @5) 38.1 mi (5:49 / mi) +5096ft 5:10 / mi
ahr:132 max:166 weight:137lbs

Was about to head out the door to do the D2R2 100K route when Walter called suggesting a plan B, a ride in the hills with him, and Bill and Ceil, and Gary Fentin, and another friend of his. Took about 5 seconds to decide that the 100K could wait for another day. So drove up to Conway, and then did a lot of hills, some paved, most dirt.

Excellent outing! And real nice that I was neither the fastest or the slowest, so could go along without worrying about waiting up or (more likely) keeping up.

And a nice cool day too, 70s, low humidity.

Over to the hills in West Deerfield, included a couple of unmaintained dirt road sections which added a little spice to things. Took some work getting up Old Albany Road, but the rest of the ride was nice. Breezy, more or less from the south.

Corn ride. Out the usual way, easy pace, tailwind. Back via Pine Nook Road (dirt), 6:43 for the Eaglebrook climb (.62 miles, 320' climb). Seems I did it once before, in May, 7:08, so this is excellent. I mean at this age, 3 months older should make you about 10% slower, right? Although it could just be the new bike.

Plus I had an ear of corn in each of my short pockets.

Took a bit of gumption to get out the door -- warm and humid and I could easily have gone to take a nap instead -- but thunderstorms were expected in a couple of hours so had to get going. And once I was out it was mostly OK, just took a few minutes to get the legs going, and the butt was still getting unhappy at the end.

Whately and Hatfield, lots of flat, but also a bit on dirt roads in West Hatfield, hadn't been up there in maybe 40 years. Nice bit of variety. Worked hard the first few miles into a modest breeze from the south, took it easier on the way home.

Waiting for cooler weather to do the next longer ride. Maybe the D2R2 100K or some modification of it? Certainly would be more pleasant on my own than having to worry about being run into the whole time. Or the last 50-60% of the Greylock century, could put together a good loop? Or see if I can make it up Ascutney? Lots of possibilities.

ahr:110 max:136 weight:136.5lbs

On the flats in Whately and Hatfield, relaxed pace. Legs feeling better, butt still a little unhappy. Gorgeous day.

648 miles biking for the month. Was aiming (in a casual way) for 700, so pretty close. And 2,350 for the year so far. And enjoyed almost all of it.
