Walter called, he and Ceil were heading out shortly, was I interested? Why not, I ride enough by myself. So hustled over to a Conway meeting spot, and then not quite 3 hours of taking whichever road seemed to offer the less traffic (and usually, as part of the package, more hills). And usually "less traffic" really meant no traffic.

Once again, a few spots I'd never been. The country around here is so gorgeous. Just have to get out and enjoy it.

Up to Lake Wyola and then Wendell, all paved, then back via the state forest, maybe 4 miles rather rough dirt.

Hadn't been sure what I felt like doing for today's ride. Finally decided to wait until tomorrow for a good hilly ride, thought I'd go up to Wendell, maybe 1,000' higher but Take It Really Easy, so it would be mostly a rest day.

So that accomplished its purpose of getting me out the door (ie. self-deception). The ride itself was a good steady effort, certainly not taking it easy despite my intentions. We'll see tomorrow whether any harm was done.

In the flats south of town. Seemed like a little more work than intended. But good to get out before the showers come.

Note

Here is another way of viewing today's route (well, it's Walter's route, the handle on the lollipop is the extra bit he did to get to and from from his house to our meeting place in Conway).

biking - dark blue bike 3:41:28 intensity: (37 @1) + (1:31:39 @2) + (1:53:18 @3) + (13:54 @4) + (2:00 @5) 38.1 mi (5:49 / mi) +5096ft 5:10 / mi

Was about to head out the door to do the D2R2 100K route when Walter called suggesting a plan B, a ride in the hills with him, and Bill and Ceil, and Gary Fentin, and another friend of his. Took about 5 seconds to decide that the 100K could wait for another day. So drove up to Conway, and then did a lot of hills, some paved, most dirt.

Excellent outing! And real nice that I was neither the fastest or the slowest, so could go along without worrying about waiting up or (more likely) keeping up.

And a nice cool day too, 70s, low humidity.

Over to the hills in West Deerfield, included a couple of unmaintained dirt road sections which added a little spice to things. Took some work getting up Old Albany Road, but the rest of the ride was nice. Breezy, more or less from the south.

Corn ride. Out the usual way, easy pace, tailwind. Back via Pine Nook Road (dirt), 6:43 for the Eaglebrook climb (.62 miles, 320' climb). Seems I did it once before, in May, 7:08, so this is excellent. I mean at this age, 3 months older should make you about 10% slower, right? Although it could just be the new bike.

Plus I had an ear of corn in each of my short pockets.
