biking - dark blue bike 49:07 [3] 11.39 mi (4:19 / mi) +963ft 4:00 / mi

From Mike and Vivian's in Aiken. Not a long outing but a (real) hard effort. Lots of short steep hills that had me gasping a number of times. Been a while since that had been the case. Late afternoon again, sunny, low 50s, not much traffic.

Saw only one other biker, in my rear-view mirror, well, actually just saw the shadow, well, actually was looking at my own shadow stretched way behind me as I headed up a rise directly into the sun. Once again confronted with my own mental decline. All you can do is laugh. :-)

treadmill 20:59 [3] 2.0 mi (10:29 / mi)

Almost got the weather right. Our itinerary is determined with a look at the weather patterns and it seemed possible that all the rain would move through overnight. We had already missed Thursday's and Friday's rain in much of Georgia. But it was raining hard when I got up, and seemed it would last until late morning.

Not so bad though. Hopped on the treadmill for 2 miles, currently my standard distance. 4 on, 1 off (which means 4 minutes running, 1 walking, as opposed to 4 on the treadmill, one standing by the side). 10:52, 10:07.

And then a leisurely breakfast. And pretty soon the sun will be out. :-)

hike with Gail 1:13:03 [1] 4.05 mi (18:02 / mi) +10ft 18:00 / mi

Flat again. Tomorrow we head for some hills.

run/hike 23:30 [2] 2.28 mi (10:18 / mi) +7ft 10:17 / mi

Cloudy, mid 60s, quite humid, dewpoint 64 (haven't seen a number like that at home for a while). The 7 feet of climb seems pretty accurate. 3 on 1 off.

Lots of marshland around here (Jekyll Island, GA) that wouldn't be at all appealing for orienteering (unless maybe for Joe B. and one of his 24-hour adventure races), but it is home to a lot of critters. Like the Little Blue Heron (adult) and the White Ibis (juvenile).

biking - dark blue bike 46:24 [2] 9.8 mi (4:44 / mi) +1ft 4:44 / mi

A short ride finishing just before it got dark. AP says I did 1 foot of climb. Thought it was more. Decided towards the end that I needed to learn how to do a proper bunny hop, so I tried a few. A lot of room for improvement.

hike with Gail 1:13:35 [1] 4.07 mi (18:05 / mi) +7ft 18:03 / mi

On the north end of Jekyll Island. Low 60s, sunny, no wind, just perfect. Stopped occasionally to check out the birds. No snakes or alligators. Was planning a run/walk session too, but didn't finish the walk until the sun was below the horizon, so that will have to wait to tomorrow.

Note

Lots of critters were out and about celebrating the new year, though this Field Sparrow needs to be careful. At a little less than half an ounce (12 grams), it would make a tasty appetizer for the roughly 50 times bigger Red-shouldered Hawk. Though I think the hawk generally has a preference for rodents.

12 PM

run/hike 21:00 [2] 2.01 mi (10:28 / mi) +175ft 9:40 / mi

Sunny, low 50s. I could get used to this. 3 on, 1 off.

4 PM

biking - dark blue bike 48:54 [2] 11.27 mi (4:20 / mi) +554ft 4:09 / mi

A late afternoon ride. Low 50s, I was a little chilly in just one shirt and shorts, so had to work harder for the first bit to warm up. Low 50s on New Year's Day is still pretty fine.

One short venture onto a mountain bike trail. Pretty much a series of bumps and dips, and most of the dips had some good Georgia mud in them. Managed to stay on my bike despite almost grinding to a halt a couple of times, and I did exit at the first opportunity, not really my thing.

Heading for the coast tomorrow.

Oh, and more critters. These guys checked in at well more than the 3 or 4 grams that most hummingbirds weigh. Don't think they have to worry about any hawks.

hike with Gail 1:09:35 [1] 3.3 mi (21:05 / mi) +43ft 20:50 / mi

At Chattahoochie Bend State Park. Been here once before, April 2012, bad memories (especially see the comments).

Also with Gail's brother Bill. And a lot more enjoyable day than in 2012. :-)

3 PM

Note

AP's summary for the year. Clearly slacking off on the bike. But more than made up for it with 55 hikes with Gail, a tiny little bit of running, and ditto of orienteering.

Goal for 2020. Try to stay in a comfortable spot between too competitive and not competitive at all.

run/hike 24:53 [2] 2.25 mi (11:04 / mi) +150ft 10:24 / mi

Front went through overnight, so sunny, low 50s, low humidity. Still sweating a bunch. Even jogging slowly seems to be hard work. 1 off, 2 on.

6 PM

biking - dark blue bike 1:04:36 [2] 14.1 mi (4:35 / mi) +1525ft 4:09 / mi

Bike trails in Peachtree City. Managed to make my way back to Caroline's house without checking my phone to see where I was (more of an accomplishment than you might think). Sure helped that the sun was out so I at least knew what directionI was going.
