Note

One more addition to the list, a Northern Leopard Frog this morning. Never saw it (actually there were at least a couple of them), but the voice was distinctive.

And a few birds are moving north....

hike with Gail 1:27:53 [1] 4.77 mi (18:26 / mi) +721ft 16:08 / mi
weight:140.5lbs

S. Schoolhouse and Glen Roads in Leyden. Hilly. Lovely day. Hardly any cars, hardly any people. A little more than our usual four miles, seemed appropriate to go to the end of the road.

Hemenway Road. Dirt, no traffic, a couple of walkers, no dogs. Managed to run it all. I wonder if the time will ever come again when it won't be just hard work.

3 PM

Note

Today's addition to my frog collection was an American Toad. At least 3 of them, though I never actually saw any. But they were singing quite splendidly.

For reference.

Hemenway Road just about to the Leverett Co-op. Nice to have a break in the rain so we could get this in.

Good run, even made it up the last hill. Breathing helps.

hike with Gail 1:13:18 [1] 4.04 mi (18:09 / mi) +517ft 16:11 / mi
weight:139.5lbs

Old Albany Road to intersection with South Shelburne Road.

The highlight, obviously, was the great frog hunt, which was both unsuccessful in that we never actually found the frog, despite my confidence that I had located it carefully camouflaged in the mud. Gail was quite certain that all I had found was mud, and when I poked the area with a stick it seemed she was right. :-(

But also successful! Identified the critter as an Eastern Gray Treefrog by its voice. Took a recording on my phone. Once back home, it didn't take long to figure out what it was as there are only 12 species of frog in the northeast. If I could figure out how to post my recording here I would, but that (like many things) seems beyond my ability.

Exciting, right? Actually in the world of COVID-19, it rates as really exciting. :-)

And, of course, there is an action shot of the hunt --

road running 20:13 intensity: (35 @1) + (2:27 @2) + (13:58 @3) + (3:13 @4) 2.06 mi (9:50 / mi) +184ft 9:04 / mi
ahr:138 max:155 weight:140lbs

Around the block from home, some effort but gentle. Seemed OK. Remembered partway up the first little hill to pay attention to my breathing, and that helped. Good to get back to what suits me.
