12 PM

road running 3:33 intensity: (37 @1) + (2:56 @2) 0.35 mi (10:00 / mi)
ahr:113 max:129

Tried a gentle run. Calf didn't really seem to like it. Shut it down immediately.

1 PM

hike with Gail 1:09:24 [1] 4.07 mi (17:03 / mi) +571ft 15:03 / mi
weight:139.5lbs

Cooleyville Road in Shutesbury, with Diane M again. Delightful afternoon and company.

Note

Annual Town Meeting yesterday afternoon behind the town office building (used to be the elementary school). Every one was doing a pretty good job of keeping their distance. Masks were required. Got the necessary business done, passed a budget, though it's hard to believe we won't be redoing it all when the state finally decides how much local aid it will give us.

It's been a strange 3 months for our local government (and for my particular interest these days, the elementary school). But it has been, and continues to be, immensely better than any other government I have to deal with.

biking - dark blue bike 56:22 intensity: (1:52 @1) + (34:30 @2) + (19:18 @3) + (42 @4) 14.83 mi (3:48 / mi) +290ft 3:44 / mi
ahr:124 max:153 weight:139.5lbs

Sunny, warm, and humid, light breeze from the SW. Same loop as a couple of days ago, worked a little harder.

11 AM

Note

This critter was spotted on our walk yesterday. Seems it's a red eft, or an Eastern newt, or actually both. Seen them lots of times over the years but never paid much attention. An interesting life cycle though not a good pet it seems, and best to just leave them alone.

North up the river, gently rolling. Modest SW breeze. Mid to upper 70s, getting warmer, glad I got out when I did. Legs felt OK.

Note

Until quite recently, upon spotting a toad, my reaction would have been along the lines of Yuck. Nowadays it's more like Wow.

I mean, this guy is a real work of art.

I think it's an American Toad (as opposed to the other toad species around here, a Fowler's Toad). But I'm more than willing to defer to an expert.

(Some ID tips.)

10 AM

biking - dark blue bike 53:28 intensity: (4:38 @1) + (45:35 @2) + (3:15 @3) 13.55 mi (3:57 / mi) +364ft 3:51 / mi
ahr:113 max:142 weight:140lbs

To Whately and South Deerfield. Some effort on all the little ups, otherwise mellow.

2 PM

hike with Gail 1:09:05 [1] 4.01 mi (17:13 / mi) +134ft 16:41 / mi

Sand Gully and Hoosac Roads.

ahr:103 max:132 weight:140.5lbs

Easy ride on the flats south of town. Feeling a little achy. We've been spending a few hours over the last three days uprooting prickers and bittersweet around the house. Wish I could say we were done. At least it's been nice and cool.

Note

I didn't know that red clover was such a useful plant.
