One of those days where it probably helps that you have no idea when you start how fast your ride partner is planning on going. And where it surely helps to have absolutely no compunction about spending the whole ride, well, at least 99% of it, glued to his rear wheel. You gotta do what you gotta do.
Fine ride with Phil on one of his standard loops, which, despite the fact that much of it is in Northampton, has remarkably few sections of the really crappy pavement that the city is known for. Phil had his road bike out, which he seems to be able to move along at a pace a fair bit better than anything I can do. So the only hope was to draft as much as possible.
Which pretty much worked. :-)
Almost got dropped on the climb before Williamsburg, at one point I was losing it and starting to drop back, but maybe Phil was working hard too and I managed to get back on. If he had a rear-view mirror he might have noticed and put the hammer down, but he doesn't.
Best part was heading back along route 9, more down than up and a bit of a headwind. I felt the wind as we turned in Williamsburg, and that put a smile on my face, not the normal reaction to a headwind. But I just tucked in tight and enjoyed watching Phil work a lot harder than me.
Last time I did any loop at 18 mph was a long time ago. Not that this one was legit (for me, it certainly was for Phil). But nice to get it done.
And the first raindrops came just as we were finishing. Perfect timing.

Montague Center and Leverett via Cave Hill Road. Nice ride, nice pace on the ups, neither trashing myself nor dogging it.

Just up from the house on the west slope of Mt. Toby, checking out the continuation of the single-track bike trail we found last time. This section was a bit scruffier in general (I would have been off my bike in several places), but a fine exploration.
At one point it cut through an area that had been logged several years ago. The trail went through some waist-high grass for a while and then started to get worse. I suggested it might be best to turn back. "Onward" was Gail's immediate response. :-)
And in another 100 yards we were out of it, and there was a trail running right along the edge of the cut. Hmm, we seem to have missed something.
Climbed up as far as the height of land on Muck, then headed back. It was clear we'd have to take the same trail back, just to see where we had missed. And sure enough, there was a little turn-off in the high grass that made it all easier. Nice to know.
So the hike gets an A+, of course. A bit of adventure, right?
Plus met one guy riding a mountain bike, had a nice chat. Real pleasant, lives just down the street.

A nice route with what seem like a proper amount and quality of ups. Sunny, about 80, low humidity, breeze out of the south. Enjoyed the whole thing.

With Gail on Falls Road.
And when we got home she spotted this guy eating a milkweed leaf. Seems like it will transform into a Monarch Butterfly at some point. Been reading about them in the article Phil's daughter Nora wrote.

North, very gently rolling. Warm and humid once again. Another very modest effort.
The thinking is that once or maybe twice a week should be something more ambitious, but most days just getting out for some exercise should be sufficient. Actually, just getting some exercise would be perfectly sufficient for physical health, but an occasional something ambitious is good for mental health. :-)

Keets Brook Road, Keets Brook Branch Road, and (once we got into Vermont) Bassett Hill Road. Warm, but the humidity was dropping, so reasonably pleasant.
A nice granite marker at the state line, dated 1896.
