8 AM

biking - dark blue bike 1:36:53 intensity: (12:25 @1) + (1:24:28 @2) 21.13 mi (4:35 / mi) +591ft 4:28 / mi
ahr:110 max:127

With Walter. Relaxed ride, really nice. Though my legs were certainly absent.

3 PM

biking - dark blue bike 40:56 intensity: (18:10 @1) + (22:46 @2) 8.93 mi (4:35 / mi) +83ft 4:33 / mi
ahr:100 max:116

With Gail, out Falls Road. Hot, but not so humid and a breeze out of the NW. So pretty nice. Except I was running out of gas before we were home. Certainly glad we hadn't gone any farther.

Gail seems to be managing pretty well on the bike, busted shoulder and all. But then she's been doing her exercises regularly. It won't be as good as it was, but it's gotten a whole lot better.

biking - dark blue bike 2:56:46 intensity: (31 @1) + (53:47 @2) + (1:26:39 @3) + (34:38 @4) + (1:11 @5) 39.83 mi (4:26 / mi) +2819ft 4:10 / mi
ahr:137 max:162 weight:140lbs

In the hills with Phil. Struggling on the uphills the whole time. Warm and muggy, actually quite enjoyed the rain the last 10-15 minutes, pretty hard by the end. Certainly cooled things off.

But the hills.... :-(

36:45 up East Hawley Road.

4 PM

hike with Gail 1:07:51 [1] 4.02 mi (16:54 / mi) +133ft 16:23 / mi

Sand Gully and Hoosac Roads.

Second training of the day. I'd requested something rather flat, to give me some chance of doing it. Managed OK, but now the legs are really trashed.

ahr:103 max:118 weight:140lbs

With Gail, managed to get out (and back) before the storms moved in. :-)

Slowly increasing her rides. I'm sure she'd be doing more if we didn't have the hikes as well, and the hikes are probably better for her bones.

hike with Gail 1:20:31 [1] 4.25 mi (18:57 / mi) +564ft 16:50 / mi
weight:141lbs

New England Trail (formerly the M&M) south from Prescott Road in Shutesbury. With Di, we missed one turn while we were chatting away. Nice trail, mostly somewhat overgrown old Quabbin road, part hiking trail.

Had it to ourselves.

5 PM

biking - dark blue bike 47:47 intensity: (2:06 @1) + (36:57 @2) + (8:44 @3) 12.6 mi (3:48 / mi) +180ft 3:44 / mi
ahr:120 max:150

Late afternoon ride, warm (85) and muggy. Put out more effort than planned, by the last 15 minutes I was feeling rather feeble.

biking - dark blue bike 48:51 intensity: (2:12 @1) + (30:59 @2) + (12:46 @3) + (2:54 @4) 10.0 mi (4:53 / mi) +768ft 4:33 / mi
ahr:122 max:156 weight:140.5lbs

A perfect Valerie (at least ten miles, but no more), though on second thought, a perfect Valerie would not have any uphills, so this ride surely doesn't qualify.

On the other hand, it was just the right way to start my Lincoln Gap training -- steady effort, keep the heart rate under control. 10:45 up Sugarloaf. Lincoln Gap will take 25-30 minutes, if I can stay on the bike.

hike with Gail 1:09:50 [1] 4.01 mi (17:24 / mi) +400ft 15:54 / mi

Pine Nook Road.

12 PM

biking - dark blue bike 1:25:42 intensity: (1:32 @1) + (40:27 @2) + (43:33 @3) + (10 @4) 21.24 mi (4:02 / mi) +750ft 3:54 / mi
ahr:127 max:151 weight:140lbs

Thought I might catch some rain but just a momentary sprinkle or two, though in some places there was enough water on the road to indicate it had rained recently.

Legs were dead, at least on the first part, especially going up Jackson Hill Road. It's not much, but I had it in my lowest gear and the legs were still complaining. But things improved after that. Nothing like some downhills to improve morale.

I was thinking, I'm never going to make it up Lincoln Gap if the legs feel anything like this.

biking - dark blue bike 40:28 intensity: (5:08 @1) + (34:53 @2) + (27 @3) 10.32 mi (3:55 / mi) +189ft 3:51 / mi
ahr:111 max:134 weight:140lbs

Main storm had passed through by mid-afternoon and the roads were mostly dry by the time I went out for a short ride into a bit of Whately and Deerfield. I saw several trees down and a few trucks from the electric company. Seems Whately was about 90% without power and Sunderland maybe a third without. Just as glad it was the other (south) end of town.

We certainly got some rain. Lots of small ponds in the farm fields. The kind of rain that can do more harm than good, depending on what crops are being grown and how far along they were.

And now, waiting for dinner to finish cooking, it's back raining again. We do need it.

Will probably help the FDFs too. They were looking a little lethargic yesterday.
