Note

From an article in today's New York Times regarding Russian losses in Ukraine --

As he walked through the wreckage, the commander picked up a soldier’s silver dog tag. It bore the number 785 000 and the imprint of the Soviet Army — VS U.S.S.R. He picked up an empty army satchel, with a tag with the name A.G. Gagarin on it and his unit number, 666. “They did not succeed,” he said grimly. “Gagarin is OK, he is dead.”

It seems to me that the last 6 words would be quite fitting on my tombstone (not that I expect there to be a tombstone), perhaps replacing the current favorite -- "I should have done it a year earlier." :-)

walking 53:00 [3] 1.0 mi (53:01 / mi)
weight:139.5lbs

Snipe hunting.

1 PM

hike with Gail 48:28 [1] 2.1 mi (23:05 / mi) +150ft 21:37 / mi

Trails near Cranberry Pond, mostly single-track, including some new to us, and a few ups (on which the legs felt like jello).

Bennett Meadows.

2 PM

walking 7:40 [2]

Rain came earlier than expected, opted for indoor route #2, front door to bedroom, so up and down a set of stairs. 10x, careful as ever. Actually starting to breathe a little harder, first time that's happened in a while. Doesn't take much.

5 PM

walking 8:55 [1]

10 x #2, easy.

9 AM

walking 2:37:00 [1] 3.73 mi (42:05 / mi)
weight:140lbs

East Leveratt Conservation Trails. Nice morning, windy out in the open but nut in the woods. Slow and careful.

Continuing to improve slowly. Sneezed yesterday without realizing it was about to happen and it was almost tolerable. Sleeping slowly gets better. The focus is still, and may be for a long time, on being careful.

4 PM

hike with Gail 28:46 [1] 1.42 mi (20:15 / mi) +41ft 19:42 / mi

From the gate on Mt. Toby, the spot to go when the wind is strong and from the northwest. When far enough to get to the start of the Power Line Power Climb, though that will have to wait for another day. Or another life.

When we got home, both of us seemed to be entering into the territory of low blood sugar (though perhaps it was just a handy excuse for what followed). Gail, possessor of by far the better memory, reached into the freezer and extracted a container of Bart's chocolate ice cream that I had totally forgotten about. Boy did that taste good. All credit to Phil, who brought it along when he visited recently, and who is probably appalled that it lasted so long without being eaten. That certainly would have never happened at his house. :-)
