running (sleet ice broken limbs) 1:09:40 [4] 6.0 mi (11:37 / mi)
shoes: Hoka Speedgoat 3

More limbs breaking today and last night than when the ice was heavier 10 and 15 years ago (2000-2010 or so 3-4 major ice storms...mom and dad were out of power one storm three weeks!). I heard one limb break...like a rifle shot...about 1 mile in. Steady but heavy sprinkle the whole way...limbs leaning over sidewalk a few places and I stopped to move limbs off sidewalk 3 times. Heard total of 3 limbs breaking during the run...then as I got home I heard a loud pop in the backyard...had already pulled limbs off the yard up under the trees at 5 this morning...more had fallen while I ran...one medium side one was on the vinyl tool shed...it seemed ok.

I worked ice storm claims up in Ponca City (way north nearly to Kansas)...people described how the power was out and they could clearly hear the limbs breaking all night long...like rifle shots. The limbs were heavy...even would stick in the ground rather than fall flat and tore some roof up pretty badly.

This is so early most of the leaves are still on trees so must have gather extra weight because the ice is just not that thick but the trees are older and bigger so that may have something to do with it also.

Anyway there was slush in places on the sidewalk that I never trusted...always afraid of a slick spot...but didn't slip once and overall the sidewalk except for puddles were better than I expected. Had ice on the bill of my hat but overall it was like yesterday...I got into a groove like a robot and just let things happen. I really thought my pace would be about 13 minutes or not much quicker...but I beat that quite a bit.

When I finished I pulled off my gloves...hands got cold quick and all I could think of was if I was an old frontiersman caught out in something like this...wet everywhere...you are soaking wet, cold and maybe no shelter at all and probably no way to start a fire in most cases. So I have no illusions about being 'tough' since I had a dry warm house to come back to and dry clothes to put on.

Afternoon: 2 hours cutting limbs and putting them in piles. Not done. More to do tomorrow. Limbs falling in yard and other yards while I was working.
