Running race 19:44 [5] 5.07 km (3:54 / km)
ahr:179 max:186
Headed down to the waterfront 5k.
Short version: It was hot, not much wind, beaut evening. I ran. It hurt. But I finished strongly enough and timed in at 19:44. Not super speedy, but it's a result on the board, which was the biggest goal tonight.
Longer version:
It's 9-10yrs since I successfully finished a 5km race. Time trials (and athletics, and cross country) are something that I've always struggled with physically and mentally. With the wisdom of hindsight, the physical struggle was in no small part thanks to my heart issue, which in turn prob lead to the mental struggle and dislike of any head-head racing that I've had ever since school.
Anyway, as a result I've never completed a 3000m time trial (a goal for this year), and until today I'd never gone under 20mins on a 5km. Too many bad experiences with breathing/dizziness/trying not to pass out meant I'd given up even trying these things in the last years. So today was just about getting over the first mental hurdle and running a steady 5k. Which I did. :)
Also @han_solo claimed he was going to slip-stream off me, but lasted 5-10s behind before coming past and disappearing into the distance. Not sure if he understands the concept of slip-streaming, but can't fault his technique as it lead to an impressive PB.
