O-training warm up/down 18:55 intensity: (58 @0) + (12:00 @1) + (4:40 @2) + (1:17 @3) ***** 2.15 km (8:47 / km) +84m 7:21 / km

Stopped at Castle Hill on the way from Jacksons to Christchurch. Beautiful drive. Got a map printed at the campsite and then drew some controls. Ran with Conor as a warm up. Amazing features of limestone and was very fun. Map was very difficult to get my head around.

Running (off-road) hills 38:01 intensity: (36 @0) + (13:26 @1) + (5:10 @2) + (5:51 @3) + (8:01 @4) + (4:57 @5) 3.32 km (11:27 / km) +436m 6:55 / km

4x 5min hills up the side of Castle Hill with Conor.
This was stupidly steep. Conor said we'd never get 5 mins out of it but he was very wrong. Flattish start and then kicked up crazy hard. Too steep really but fought on. Conor was strong, I suffered big time on reps 2 & 4. 3 was oddly decent. Maybe it was the Don cheering? For the last we started further up the hill with the intention of getting to the to pin 5 mins. Not having the flatter start killed me. Managed 5:30 if effort but was toast then.
Once at the summit climbed up the big rock and had a look at the views. Very nice.

Running (off-road) warm up/down 23:00 intensity: (1:53 @0) + (17:18 @1) + (2:00 @2) + (49 @3) + (1:00 @4) 2.73 km (8:26 / km) +51m 7:43 / km

Cool down from the summit started oing but then just wanted to explore so did that instead. Amazing area.

Stopped for 1.5 pies in Sheffield. They were very very good.

Avalanche Peak from Arthur's Pass.
A proper steep one up and down. Speed was variable, especially when I had the camera and was going in front taking photos, then being behind and having to catch up. Spectacular views the whole time. Quite windy, but gusty and omnidirectional. Made the exposed summit a bit interesting. There was a resident Kea up top which was nice but a bit sad to see people feeding him.

Sneaky beach run before some driving for the day. Just down and up, a few birds about. Quads in an absolute world of hurt with DOMs still. Finished with 6x 100m strides on the road. Really not up for them at first but got into them after 1 or 2.
9 PM

Note

After breakfast went body boarding at the beach by the campsite (they were free from the campsite). Then looked at the shags by the lighthouse I ran by yesterday + 2x seals. Drove south to Pancake rocks and blowholes. They were fairly good. Shopping in Greymouth where we bought an aux to tape converter but then didn't have a tape player to had to return it. Next to Moana and Lake Brunner for a little walk and dip my toes in before heading up to Jacksons. Looked for more glow worms before bed but they were remarkably non-spectacular after the last encounter.

Note

Lazy morning doing washing before going to the seal colony at Cape Foulwind. Followed up with a swim there in some great waves. Little walk to a lighthouse and then back to the campsite. Legs barely capable of walking around really. In an absolute state after yesterday.

Running (road) tempo 1:04:01 intensity: (1:27 @0) + (45:38 @1) + (6:34 @2) + (8:01 @3) + (1:47 @4) + (34 @5) 11.99 km (5:20 / km) +26m 5:17 / km

Ended up in flat land so wasn't sure where the hills were going to come from but had a look at some maps and made a route that should work.
Plan was:
20min tempo, 8x 30s hills

Along the beach for warm up first, great tail wind. Quads in proper bits with DOMs from the epic descent yesterday and took a lot of warming up. Was glad I had the tailwind to start and did a little loop out to the end lighthouse, though I did get stuck behind some woman walking up the only path. Then headwind city for the next 15 mins. It was a suffer but I got it done. Was a bit short as a result and had to do the first 4x 30s on the flat before I got to the hill. Tried hard and it was a nice session. Back to the campsite for a tasty BBQ then.

Up Mt. Owen from the Hut. Nice to have a lighter bag. More great views and then amazing landscape near the top with exposed karst limestone pavements (https://bit.ly/2FfPcKs for LoTR pic). Steep enough finish. Had a bit of a race with Conor with the summit which he was always going to win since I had been down the back chatting with Don. The summit was on the edge of a huge cliff though that gave us a bit of a fright. Don's hat blew over the edge. Bit of lunch up there, met a Czech guy who was climbing solo before going down to the hut for some lunch.
1 PM

Running (off-road) 1:24:46 intensity: (11:07 @0) + (46:30 @1) + (19:05 @2) + (7:05 @3) + (59 @4) 9.4 km (9:01 / km) +262m 7:55 / km
ahr:132 max:165 shoes: Inov8 X-talons 225

Ran down from the hut with Conor. First bit was really nice along the river bed, nice and technical before the bit of a climb where we caught Don. Quick jelly stop and key swap there too. Then the descent. 1000m of just down. Past the Czech guy from the summit, saw 3 more Weka and we were going grand. Got to the junction but by then we were starting to suffer. Down the the river was great but by the end both of our legs were on absolute fire. My quads would barely hold me up. The extra weight of the bag was really noticeable. Took a detour to look at some tourist things, gold mining stuff. Then some flat before a last detour up to a pool in the river for a swim which was glorious. Once down we had to wait for the rest. Car was too hot and there were huge numbers of bees and sandflies not in the car so it wasn't the nicest wait.

Then on to Westport for the evening. Burger and Kumara fries before dinner while watching the rest of them put up their tents in the rain while Gina and I sat in our nice dry car.

2 day walk on the cards. We skipped the sunrise option, too early in the southern hemisphere on new years, and drove through Nelson and on towards Mt. Owen. I had a good sleep in the car. It got quite late and we started at about 17:30 from the field of bees. Steep from the get go. Conor hared off and tired most people out early. Lovely walk and plenty of nature. Saw a southern robin which are not even red-breasted. Changing vegetation style regularly kept it interesting. Overnight bag felt heavy enough and was glad to get to the lovely hut for some dinner before dark.

Kayaking 2:15:38 [0] 1.65 km (1:22:12 / km)

Kayaking Pelorus sound! 2x doubles and a single for Ruth. Lovely morning pottering around. Beautiful area. Stopped for lunch on a nice beach. Went through a nice sea arch (just about). Crossed in front of the ferry in a nice windy stretch. Got a little burned on the neck. Fecked up the GPS by setting it to swim which doesn't use it so the other one has some GPS track. Laser eye surgery made this a much better experience than it otherwise might have been.

Evening easy one from the campsite. Tried the the other way which was nice for a while but then the path just went out onto the road so I turned around. Back past the tent and a little loop. Went swiming then in the sea off the pier immediately after which was great. Again having no contacts made swimming under water so good. Messing about with my goggles looking a some fish, sting rays and starfish.
