I can only swim four consecutive lengths of crawl before collapsing at the end of the pool in a heap however I appear to have signed up to swim three times this (400m) in a triathlon so the basic aim of this session was to attempt 16 continuous lengths of crawl. Warmed up doing breaststroke then set out on the first attempt and died after 8 lengths. However, for the last two I was stuck behind a slow person and realised that clearly I only know how to swim crawl in a somewhat manic fashion, so after a short rest I deliberately set off behind someone going a bit slow and completed 16 lengths in 10min. Style had fallen apart by the end but at least I know now that I can make the distance. Warmed down doing breaststroke and then went home to read about swimming drills and how on earth to actually train for swimming rather than just using it as an easy session.

Yesterday in a fit of enthusiasm I entered a 10k (actually two but one is being done in fancy dress to support a friend so it doesn't really count), a half marathon and a sprint triathlon so I thought I ought to see how slow I've got before planning some training. Tried to keep the pace up but this wasn't as hard as I could go in a race, HRM readings are useless, I reckon this was 70-80% effort the whole way. Actually quite pleased, I had a feeling it was going to take closer to 70min. Today I'm entering some orienteering events.

Tim came out on a borris bike to keep me company which was nice. Was planning on going around St James park, through Green park then a loop around Hyde park but when we hit Hyde we realised that winter wonderland was in the way and there were millions of people around so we cut it a bit short.
I finally got around to putting the metronome track on my shuffle so did a cadence interval of 1min at 90bpm followed by 5min how I normally run. 90rpm felt fast but not insane and I think my normal cadence of 83rpm is a bit slow. Towards the end I was trying to keep up the cadence without the clicking and managed to average 85rpm for the last two 5min sections. Also noticed that the higher cadence sections were at increased pace so if I can get used to a higher leg turnover maybe I could go a bit faster.
Something happened to my heart rate readings, they look quite acceptable for the first 10 minutes then drop to 50bpm at 15min and then go up and down with how much effort I was putting in but from a baseline of 50. I've noticed some other questionable readings recently so will put a new battery in the HRM strap and see if that sorts it out.
