training times keep rising like the price of gas, and that can't be good news with a 10 hour drive comimg up. In all fairness, in attempting to work off the winter weight gain, I didn't have the pre-run donut. Of course, given the reported financial woes of the Krispy Kreme Corporation, it also seems like a wise decision not to nurture this addiction.

OTOH, last night's bowl of vanilla ice cream with a substantial golden honey glaze didn't help on the calorie front, but that is one treat you don't pass up when the opportunity presents itself.

Morale seems to be improving with the realization that I will be required to take a late start time in St. Louis, and thus be unable to get to the board meeting. Two USOF hassles in a row was too much for me, and I do believe mental fatigue takes a toll on physcial performance. While today's training was probably a bit of a hangover, I'm optimistic about running well in NC, especially if it is my favorite -- Piedmont terrain, tho my understanding is that it is more typical of mountain terrain. The wildcard is the effect of that long drive; I may try to convince eddie to stop along the way and do a lite 20 minute run just to keep the legs fresh.

Alot of bluejays out in the woods today, and saw a robin gathering just the right-sized stringy thing to make a nest. I've bought into the Darwin thing, but it would just be interesting to understand exactly how that particular skill evolved. Of course, the bird is probably thinking -- how did the skill of some moron sitting in Dilbertville typing inane words on AP evolve, when they could be here. (And in a related observation, it occurs to me that I've noticed most posting on AP during the general hours of 9-5 US time, but more data needs to be collected and analyized to see if there is a correlation).

Oh well, I hear the boss. Still trying to get some exotic google ads, but I'm not optimistic about this one either ...

wed is supposed to be intervals day, but I don't think I''ve done them since jan. Felt too mentally fatigued to do so this morning, so I just slogged my carcass around the long loop. Of course, I don't think there is much difference between my 2 gear and 4 gear, so I don't think it matters much.

Another beautiful day out there tho. A runner passing me the other way says "good morning". I must have been pushing it, because I don't think I could have done more than a caveman like "hi", so I just waved. Its sad when 5 minute Ks feels like pushing it, tho I really have no clue how long my loop is, just estimated once based on assuming it was 5 minute Ks.

a little slow today as it seems Mt. Misery has grown a line or two. I guess after 31K+ over the weekend, its ok. Plus, a bottle of single malt arrived unexpextedly in the mail yesterday (gettin' some love from the letterboxing world while USOF bigwig(s) are dissing me ...), and its tough not to take a nip or two and be glad we''ve already booked lodging for the 2007 Scottish 6 Day, which promises to be one of the finest.

I've been focusing on focus alot lately. I'm not sure why the powers that be think it is such a bad idea. When I started orienteering, it came down to one of 5 or so things: golf, letterboxing, writing, photography, or O. (Fortunately playing the tuba while riding uphill on a unicycle was not one of the choices, and if you've ever seen that done, you'd be glad it wasn't).

Anyway, besides golf and orienteering turning out to be the same thing (without the esoteric skill of hitting of a 3W in the fairway, which is harder than the tuba/unicycle thing), I decided to focus on one thing. I can't imagine having ended up with results I'd be pleased with in any of the activities had I tried to spend my limited resourses on all of them at once. Lets not forget family, housework, yardwork, and job.

So, the only conclusion I can draw from those who think focus is a bad idea are those who have tons of resources, tons of talent, or are not results-oriented. I'll leave the reader to draw conclusions as to where USOF is.

I don't care, really, if focus is a bad idea. Just don't dis me for it. Show me the evidence that it is a bad idea. And don't equate the concept of focus with the debate on what is to be focused on.

Note
reading recommendations?

I'm looking for reading recommendations. If you read my log, you may know me, and perhaps know my interests. I have the most difficult time finding good stuff to read. I mean, stuff that really interests me and is thought provoking.

I read mostly non-fiction in the science/philosophy/economic space; the fiction I enjoy is along the lines of what Umberto Eco does, and other novels I found particularily memorable are An Instance of the Fingerpost by Iain Pears, and, my favorite, The Quincunx by Charles Palliser.

So, if you've read something good lately, drop me a note.

took it pretty easy. Spectacular out there, light greens, purples, reds, and whites are all out, as were the wildflowers. April is the prettiest month in my part of the world. I was shot on the last 3K on the misery side. 20K after yesterday's race is a bit outside my comfort zone, I guess. Bursitis knee started to hurt; post-knee tendinitis started to act up also, but all seem fine now.

I wonder if running at a 2 pace has any value at all except to burn a couple of calories. Fortunately, I don't celebrate today, so I don't have to worry about pigging out. Although I'd love to pig out. God I love easter candy -- like those big coconut eggs and butter cremes. It'll all be on sale tomorrow :)

little chilly today, had a headwind going out and back on both loops, which I think was caused by a supernatural vortex which is certainly evidence of the veracity of the doctorine of intelligent design. We certainly haven't found any evidence in my dealings elsewhere.

Morale still rock bottom, but I've set up an off-line journal to keep the whining out of here.

Looking forward to the ride down with eddie to NC. XM radio is re-instating its heavy metal channel just in time :). Hopefully eddie can keep me entertained down that 500K slog of route 81 when 5 hours of death metal get old ... eddie needs to bring that IE album, as I don't have that one.

I have a theory that long drives lead to poorer race performance the next day. I am attempting to correlate this. I'm not sure why that would be so, or even if it is so, but my worst A meets seem to follow long drives. Perhaps it is a function of the sort of terrain that is within long drive radius of chester county.

Put route gadget on my site. Pretty cool, yet there are some enhancements I'd like to see. Still beats using a photo editing program.

For the past couple of days, there's this bird that has been trying to fly into my window. It keeps hitting the glass, falling down, and trying again for a few minutes. Amazing. I put a scarecrow of a halloween mask out there (the same one I wore at a night O a couple of years ago), but that only worked for a few hours. It was back the next day. It is just so weird, it must be hard wired to fly in that directon, or towards some object it sees in the house. I think how stupid that bird is. Then I think, I'm doing the same thing in USOF. I'm just as stupid as a hard-wired bird (of course, I believe I am hard-wired, and that conscious will is an illusion, so I guess it is the same).

I ended up putting several yard tools against the window, and that seems to work. Perhaps the pointy yard tools gave the scary mask some cred. Now I need some yard tools for my brain, so I'll stop. So, I'm visualizing this bird, this rake, and this demonic mask, and every time I think -- try to do a good thing for USOF, I'll visualize these things and not fly into a glass pane.

Geez, that's a long entry. Will this help my AP ranking? I don't get the google ads, but I wonder what ads this entry will spawn ...

Woke up this morning and felt like John Kruk, a professional baseball player who one day in the middle of the season just decided to up and give it all up and quit playing. So, I didn't run this morning, but managed to get out at lunch for the first time in a few months. Its just too nice out.

I don't think my morale has ever been lower, despite an otherwise fantastic season (by my standards) with a PR on a WRE and a couple of championships. While I lost 5 or 6 minutes on #5 on day 2 sunday, there is no explaining the other 10-15 minutes below where I should be. Did I just wake up one day and get 10% slower? As always, I gave it my best effort, as hard and aggressive as the terrain allowed me. I'd been feeling sick lately, but I don't think that accounts for 10%.

While I wouldn't be happy, I don't think I would be morose if I could point to 15-20 minutes of errors. And the thing was, the course and the forest were very enjoyable, and it was my kind of navigation. I should have eaten it it up. I am still very much depressed, and hope I pull out of it.

I seriously talked to my wife about quitting, at least at the serious level. I put too much time, energy, and money into something for mediocre to bad results. Couple that with the thankless hassles and headaches of the sanctioning job, which some people still can't seem to get over, I say to myself, why? Life is too short for aggrevation and mediocre results. I can get that in letterboxing whenever I want.

I'll be looking to have a good one at Fair Hill this weekend, another place I should eat up. We'll see.

definitely sick of some sort. Have no energy since saturday. Can't imagine I'm still recovering from the pig.

The lighting today was a photographer's dream -- perhaps its time to drop out of Dilbertville and follow that dream. Beautiful moring to be out there, and soon all the flowering trees will be out on Mt. Misery.

Chester County is now like one big garden, if you know the routes, the daffodils are out in the woods and the old farmsteads, weeping cherries are out. Time to plan a rural trespass rogaine :)

I thought I'd hate running in the morning, but it seems so much more beautiful, and I feel so much more in tune with what is going on outside.
