Note
Missed another morning run due to the Phillies game going 14 innings and past my bedtime. At least they won. It amazes me that they would intentionally walk Ryan Howard in extra innings to put a runner in scoring position and face a .300 hitter. I'm no manager, but my guess is that it is more probable that a .300 hitter will score a runner from second than it is that Ryan would score one from first, and the presumption is generally in extra innings that 1 run is as good as 3, but what do I know?

I made up my last skipped run, and hopefully I'll again be able to do so this weekend amongst course setting duties. Can I run 7min/k carrying rebar and e-punch units?

Tonite I get to escape my out of control life to finally see Tool, who I've been a fan of since the beginning of time, it seems, and with 2 albums in my top 100, I'm pscyhed. I don't believe we have pit tickets, which is unfortunate, as it would be cool to log moshing on AP. What color would I make it?

I guess that's just as well -- the last time I was in a mosh pit, about 2 years ago from Bad Religion/Less Than Jake, you couldn't help feel a bit out of place.

At least the stumble seems to be settling into an under control state. Thanks Sandy.

decided to run this week at a 2 pace. I think my body is banged up. As usual, not much speed difference between gears 2 and 4.

perhaps a PR on this newly-minted loop :-) Well, felt pretty good today anyway. LIghting was truly spectacular, and got so close to a fox I almost stepped on it. Hope the weather is as nice for the CNYO meet.

Note
Woke up this morning to pouring rain, and blew off the run. I can count the number of times I have done this on one hand over the past 8 years, but I still feel guilty when I do so.

Will have to make it up this weekend, and that will be tough.

move a couple of controls around. Control 400m into the dark green laurel seemed unreasonable, so we tweaked it 400m into the greenbriar ...

for better or for worse, this is my final answer. Put a fork in in this one too ...

felt like a loop PR pace, but it wasn't to be. Think I started off too slowly, as I felt pretty good towards the end as I was kicking it in. Oh well, treat myself to a post run bowl of strawberries and honey for the effort. Is there anything that doesn't go well with honey? Even with all this machinery making modern food, that is something they'll never be able to trump.

reviewing vetter comments; moving that control that made me queasy (killing a darling; not that the rest of the contols won't make the runners queasy :-)); replace original tape with control number tape . Put a fork in it, its done. Total distance 8600m. Set your expectations low, and you still may be disappointed ...

Mishung the GO control. Vetter didn't catch it either, but did make a comment that caused me to reinvestigate things. Only would have been 5 seconds max at most, but mishung is mishung.

I think we're close, if not done. At least j-man has 2 fantastic sprints. This is the most difficult area I've ever tried to set anything in. WT should be fine, and controls in the right place, at least ...

running (trail/XC) 2:06:15 [3] 22 km (5:44 / km)

tough run in the wind and rain with the ghost of Ernesto passing thru. We got to know each other quite well, and I appreciated the change from the same ol' boring headwind patterns on Mt. Joy. Passed by the car 3 times, and each time thought of packing it in, but I felt motivated to finish the planned run; more from the negative of how bad I'd feel if I wimped out rather than the positive of finishing. Oh well, its better than no motivation.

I guess I'm glad I got to do a couple of world cups. Of course, when I started, being 70 pounds overweight and absolutely no sports background (I didn't even do gym in high school, and was forced into doing some sport due to diabetes testing), I put no limits on how good I could get, and even tho I figured my chances of getting to a WOC were closer to nil than getting to Pluto; if I foreclosed on the possibility, they'd be absolutely nil, and I was clueless (well, more clueless), and I don't give up.

Since the US rules make it easier to get to a WC than a WOC, it was the perfect intermediate goal. And while I certainly wasn't good enough to do a WC in 2004, my trajectory was still up, so I figured it would be valuable, and I think it was (the prestege, pomp and circumstance, and being with teammates is different than a random WRE, and IMO the mental experience is valuable if you have WOC aspirations). I certainly wasn't twice the WT in the B final (in the classic, anyway), I was 27% behind Matthias Müller and 24th of 39 starters.

Had I been 20 years younger and had some modicum of physical talent, it would have been immensely valuable, and I feel sad not for myself who would never do another WC in any case, but some possible kid that could be in that situation -- now that important motivating stepping stone and experience opportunity is gone. I guess you're supposed to get that at JWOC, but why foreclose of adult beginners or late bloomers? At least one WOC team member this year was an adult beginner. IMHO, WRE and WC aren't even the same class of thing.

(I did decline WC in 2005, but that adult beginner talked me into one later in year, which I should have declined, no longer being on an upward trajectory, but the chance to run in Cervara was worth the embarrassment the IOF no doubt suffered with the likes of me making the IOF controller and the media circus wait around for a few centuries after everyone else had finished ...)

Oh well, there is nothing I can do to correct the situation. But it motivates me to keep entering WREs (and the cynic in me is saying to pay IOF sanctioning fees). In the odd incentive system the IOF has set up, I'm still motivated to score points for the federation, even tho I would likely never go to a WC myself. Weird. I actually don't think my points are enough to help, but I'll keep trying ...

Onto other threads ... I've actually run in a race in Sweden where there was a mishung control (#10 was mishung), and they thru out that leg and all remaining legs. I didn't like the idea then, and don't like it now, but I forget why. I know I've blogged about the whole thing, and I'm on the 'throw out the unfair course bandwagon' in pretty much all cases.

Oh well, time to do housework and prep for the final visit to HR for coursesetting.
