no pain in the injury spots until after the run, in the knee. I guess that's a good sign. Finally got around to looking at the US champs results, which I guess is an indication of how little free time I have. 19/50 on M21, surprising for an out of shape boomeister who wasn't having fun. Would have been nice not to lose 10 minutes on the first control.

Feeling major depressed and quite unmotivated this morning, only managed to make it to the park by a slothful 10:30 (not that there's anything wrong with running late, I just tend to enjoy the sunrise the most). This is the first time I can remember lacking motivation in a long time. Slow going until a little spunk in the last part when I feared I would not break 2 hours. Had a long discussion with Clare yesterday, at least I feel I articulated my concerns as best I could. Unfortunately, the concept that some people may be unwilling to donate their time for free to commercial enterprises simply doesn't seem to resonate. Perhaps it is an Internet thing, where that concept is de rigeur in the Internet culture; everything freer than everything else, except for commercial use. Lisa Carr and Greg Lennon (on the USOC web site) acknowledge the concept in their comments, so I am not totally loopy, but in USOF I am an outcast, and so it goes. Which is fine, iconoclasts need not apply. I only have so much time in my life, and I'd prefer to donate the charitable component to real charities. Its not rocket science. To each his own.

Those attending may want to pay attention to that eating thread, as I am shooting for 17:55 for M21, under the logic that it is an IOF sanctioned race, and therefore the WT should be in the 12-15 range for top-ranked IOF runner, not top-ranked USOF runner. Still undecided, but I think the terrain can be used better that way. So, eat an extra beefburger due to the longer course. Rumor has it that the sanctioning chair is uncomfortable with this line of thought, but that the ESC chair is ok with it. We are also strongly considering setting middle distance for non elite courses (ala Zermatt, again still undecided; which may mean M50 runs the M21 course also). And now an award. I've been judiciously studying every campus sprint I've run, and come up the Mapsurfer Favorite Campus Sprint Award. Not a sanctioned A meet. Not a championship. Not a WRE. But still my favorite. Would that my course be nearly as fun, tho I am confident that the weather will be warmer. Set by Mary Jones, map by Gene Wee (IIRC, apologies for imprecise memories).

| joy loop 2 + detour to ranger station
So, this dude has been putting Christian propaganda on my car for the last nine years in the parking lots where I run. I finally caught the guy doing it. I'm not offended as a non-Christian (tho we know how I feel about proselytizing), but I am offended as a non-litterbug. He does it every week, these small pieces of paper, no one wants to deal with it, the wind catches them, etc, and it ends up a big area of litter. So, I didn't confont him; I simply took his license number and the materials to the ranger station. Perhaps he has a permit to do this, (tho I was informed that this is a federal crime on federal land, by someone, admittedly, who didn't know all that much), perhaps he should be cited for littering, or perhaps nothing should happen. I just don't want this crap on my car and in my public lands. Anyway, there was a bigger FAQ pamphlet this time, and I started reading the FAQ while I was stretching (not much else to do). I will say, that if I were to convert to a meme-based religion, this would be the one; its sweet. The real upside on this thing is that no matter how wicked you are, you can get a "substitute" to stand in for you on judgement day, and, as I read the fine print, you can continue to be wicked, as the substitute has to deal with it (didn't Jerry Cantrell write a song about this principle?). OTOH, one of the FAQs asserted that no matter how virtuous you were, lack of faith in this religion was grounds for eternal damnation. Ouch. And everyone in other religions, even people who went to church were damned. Had to have faith in the religion behind this FAQ. Woe be to those who don't park on Mt. Joy or Mt. Misery. Perhaps I should not have reported the litter; now even those people will be damned. Now, my theory is to be wicked and sinful all my life, and convert to this thing on my deathbed. (I actually worked for a guy who said he was going to do this, no lie). Unfortunately, according to the FAQ, the world is going to end in a ball of fire in 2011. Well, since he's been putting this stuff on my car since 1998, I guess he'll have to find a new line of work in 4 years.

may have been a PR for this version of the loop. Usual time ~59. Who knows? Stunningly beautiful morning on Mt. Misery today. Leaves are at peak (a month late, I might add), and the diffuse lighting was incredible. I'm so glad I got CCC out so people can enjoy it in Chester County's full fall beauty.

hard, wind-driven rain. Temp drops 20% over the hour. Makes you wonder why you continue, tho it was actually quite enjoyable until it started getting cold. I've gotten a ton of positive feedback on my latest outdoor puzzle. More positives in the past week than many, many years of being associated with USOF. I feel a USOF rant coming; well, nevermind, but where are those championships I dropped everything in a hard, stressful life to move? Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me. I feel myself drifting farther and farther from orienteering. I never trained before orienteering, now I feel I look forward to the training more. Just strap on some running shoes and troll around VF. What could be more simple? No BS, no complications, no people in your face. I think it is two things, the sanctioning train wreck and the lack of recovery of any competitive ability after my injuries. Both my fault, I suppose. And perhaps it is the trend of course setters, etc., feeling it is necessary to choose thorny experiences and venues, without fail, as if it is cool or something. When I choose a venue for recreation, I avoid thorns. I'm not much of a scientist, but from what little I know about evolution, thornbushes evolved thorns so other creatures would avoid them. But what do I know? It is interesting that I am lurking on a googlegroup of a group that happened to be at Ridley the same day as a recent club meet. They are unaware of my lurkerness and don't even know I exist. The negative things they had to say about the orienteers at the park were astounding. Derision about the clothing, being competitive, being surly, etc. Geez. Similar feedback in other fora. I'm not sure how much of it is warranted, and how much of it is "us and them". I know I go out of my way to be nice to people on the trails, but my clothing, we all know about that -- hey, I ought to be able to wear whatever I want. I have no idea why I'm writing this. I have no idea why I write anything. Except outdoor puzzles. Some people seem to take to that. It is nice that there is something positive I can do. It is a shame USOF doesn't feel how I transformed sanctioning from what it was to what it is is one of those things.

Good news is the latest outdoor puzzle is done. Bad news is, astoundingly, that USOF did not move the championship bids I went out of my way to get done before the board meeting. I have a very, very hard life, and, contrary to I guess some peoples' perceptions, this stuff takes time. The silver lining is that at least, or so I'm told, they voted to move them within a week (go figure), so I suppose they'll be done by this saturday. All I can say is that if they fall into a Gookin-style black hole, its not my fault.
