Tuesday Oct 31

running (trail/XC) 54:03 [3] 10 km (5:24 / km)
(injured) shoes: yellow
misery loop 5

no pain, but did not feel fit.

Sunday Oct 29

orienteering race 54:07 [3] 6.88 km (7:52 / km)
(injured)
washington's crossing red official distance +380m taped run

mediocre run, but no pain

Friday Oct 27

running (trail/XC) 25:09 [3] 4.19 km (6:00 / km)
(injured) shoes: yellow
misery loop 2 first part

was going to run up and down the creek to remind my body that it is supposed to train on consecutive days, but felt well enough to give going over the moutain a try, first time this month. No pain came out, but it felt like it wanted to on the long downhill.

Thursday Oct 26

running (trail/XC) 40:26 [3] 8.67 km (4:40 / km)
(injured) shoes: yellow
joy loop 1

no pain, but the bio-mechanical problem doesn't feel fixed. We'll see if we can get volume up to normal levels by year end. Haven't run consecutive days since NAOC, which I think was a big mistake.
C • Why a mistake? 9

orienteering race 1:02:19 [3] 6.9 km (9:02 / km)
(injured)
dvoa long o champs green course, official distance (#520 was mishung; fixed for later runners)

pain onset mild @ 40' moderate @ 57' on the final downhill but no significant progression. Course shorter but more physical than last week. Certainly didn't feel worse than last week.

Probably could have finished the red course, possibly even the blue course, but felt the psychological benefits of a "normal" run on the green course would be better than risking a DNF on a longer course. But I don't feel better, as this is one of my favorites on the calendar, I'm the defending champion, and I've never failed to medal on it when the bags were in the right place, so I went away feeling a bit hollow, perhaps a with a feeling that I am being too cautious.

Base loss is not catastrophic yet, but noticable; 9min/k is certainly an underachievement under normal conditions.

Certainly, if the pain is all it was today and last week, I'd be fine, the problem is the onset is sudden and catastrophic when it does get severe, and one never knows when that will be. It certainly happens faster on straight XC runs; not only does it seem volume related, it seems intensity related, unless of course the bio-mechanics of XC running are that much different than the bio-mechanics of O.

Of course, this midweek's apparent regression can perhaps be explained by the fact that the week was NSAID free, as opposed to the prior week, and perhaps one should see that as a sign of encouragement when looking week over week. OTOH, my ancestors spent time looking for signs of significance in the entrails of goats, and that is what this seems like to me.

C • Good 1

quail hill red (official distance; #456 was mishung)

The good news is I finished, tho certainly didn't have the A speed, the bad news is no more horse doses of naproxin as I woke up sick in the stomach, and have felt off an on crappy all day

Monday Oct 9

aerobics 15:00 [3]
(injured)
little pain at 11:00, but it dissapated. Could prolly have done full 30 minutes but stuck to plan. Encouraging.

Saturday Oct 7

orienteering 45:00 [1]
(injured)
naoc middle model

started off running but had moderate pain so walked
orienteering race 42:15 [2] 4.48 km (9:26 / km)
(injured)
naoc middle official distance

goal was 41:30, ran 42:15. I generally enjoy this sort of thing -- difficult orienteering. Was technically solid except for hosing 10 for a fairly big number, perhaps 2-3 minutes, also missed a couple of others for small numbers.

Pain was severe right out of the triangle. Though about quitting, but it wasn't getting worse. Actually abated at #10, as there was some rest in the slower relocation process.

Morale is down -- I'm done for the weekend, most likely done for the Highlander. Hopefully will be 100% for the DVOA A meet, I love that terrain.

Friday Oct 6

orienteering 13:00 [1]
(injured)
naoc sprint model

knee started hurting after 3:45 at 2 pace so I walked
orienteering race 19:55 [3] 3.1 km (6:25 / km)
(injured)
naoc sprint offical time and distance (my watch showed 8 seconds difference, as did eddies)

got thru it, no mistakes, but perhaps hosed a couple route choices. Moderate pain; abated somewhat later in the course

Wednesday Oct 4

knee hurt after about 1 minute warmup on the stationary bike. We'll see how tomorrow goes.

Sunday Oct 1

coursesetting 32:00 [1]
stumble - hanging controls
coursesetting 30:00 [1]
stumble - control pickup

course seemed basically well-received, I guess. All that really matters was that the bags were in the right places, and the secondary goal of being a bit shorter with NAOC next week.

There were a couple tweaks I would have made, but all and all I was satisfied with the courses, and certainly with the WT. The one disappointment has to be that there wasn't a lot of variance in window order selection. And in each window, only a small minority took the optimal route as calculated by me and my computer. But, what do computers and their operators know? Never bet against the wisdom of the audience if watching Millionaire; OTOH, totally bet against the audience if buying tulips in the 1600s or tech stocks in the 2000s ...

In any case, the best part of the stumble is that it is over. One more piece of stress out of my life. I'll be off the board next summer, possibly sanctioning within the week (we'll see), and I'm not sure where I am with the ESC (although that is not stressful, and I don't mind being a part of it unless someone better is around, which is more than a distinct possibility).

And, we'll look to some course setting possibilities in '08; hopefully the one project I want comes together -- I think it is sprint WRE material.

C • Very well done and tough windo... 7
orienteering 37:57 [3]
stumble - existence check at race pace

well, this isn't good. Really bad knee pain, started happening right out of the blue while running. Don't know the cause. Right now, NAOC is out; hopefully it resolves as quickly as it came, but I have historically bad luck with knee issues. Fortunately, monday is a scheduled rest day anyway, so we'll see. I'm not checking the injury box yet; I'm still in the denial phase.
C • Let's hope denial works... I'm... 1
