New PB at the New York City Marathon.
So long time no update. New York was a great race for me. Really wanted to go out and run a controlled first 30k with the hope of avoiding previous epic collapses like LA and RVM two years ago. I set a goal time of 3:35 which is a 10 minute PB and a stretch probably on a hilly course like I had been warned New York was. But I had been training for a 3:30 pace on my tempo work so I figured it was a good A goal while still possibly achievable.
Splits below but the first 30k went really well. My thoughts during the run was focus on smooth and feel like I wasn't working hard. It's a strange thing to say in a marathon but I wanted to really focus on my pace. If it felt like I was pushing or working to keep the pace then I was going to slow down. I found it worked really well for me and I set a new PB of about 7 minutes.
Interesting tidbit. My LA time for 25k and my NYC time for 25k were basically the same. 2:06:06 and 2:05:59. However in LA I had gone out really fast and was already slowing down whereas in NYC I was running very even splits. The result was that in NYC I was 10 minutes faster for the next 15k than I was in LA. Ouch. And that includes the fact that LA was downhill for the last 7 km.
5k splits:
24:39
49:24, 24:45
1:14:45, 25:21
