Walk 56:00 [2] 5.3 km (10:34 / km)
(injured)

Street-0 at Bellbird Dell on a damp night. I walked slowly as l was in a bit of pain. The course was set by the Newbury Navigators and they did a great job.

Walk/jog 51:00 [3] 5.7 km (8:57 / km)
(injured)

I went to Geoff's scout street-O at Nunawading tonight and plodded around, alternating jogging and walking. A bit if time was spent hunting for controls that weren't quite in the centre of the circle, but overall Geoff had set a good course where route choice counted. lt was particularly nice around the freeway park area.

Walk 1:00:00 [3] 6.0 km (10:00 / km)
(injured)

I'm going to count this as an hour's walk, although it took somewhat longer. I took my Benalla firend Peter up to Kangaroo Crossing and shadowed him walking around Course 4 (Women's C) from the Xmas 5-days. He didn't do too badly for a first effort. I enjoyed the walk and being in the bush. It is amazing how much easier it is to choose the best route when you are not in a hurry.

There was a lot of smoke settled in the Wangaratta valley but the air at Eldorado was fine. It was very hot and don't think I could have run even if I tried.

Swim 35:00 [3] 1.0 km (35:00 / km)
(injured)

Swim in the Benalla pool after a big morning of gardening. A friend was there but neither of us realised it until we put our glasses on.

I didn't go to either the SS1 event at Baw Baw or the MTBO event, but have entered for SS2 next week at Mt Beckworth, an area I like, even if I have to walk.

Unfortunately, at the risk of boring you all, I may not be quite as ready for a running comeback as I had hoped, as my knee was swollen this morning following yesterday's run (which my head enjoyed immensely). The risk of re-occurance is high after aspiration and I probably need to either give up running or seek further advice. I have a referral to a surgeon so will use that in the next few weeks.

Run 43:52 [3] 5.9 km (7:26 / km)
(injured)

First run in a long time. It was a slow plod around Reef Hills (back in Benalla) and I didn't lift my feet very high. But I didn't stop and jogged up the hills and felt OK. So continues the recovery.

It has taken a long time to get to this point - but then again, as I learned during a visit to the doctors earlier this week, the baker's cyst that was removed was 4.5 x 2.5 x 1 cm, which was quite large, and it would have taken some time before the ligaments etc settled back to where they were supposed to be.

Walk 1:00:00 [2] 6.0 km (10:00 / km)
(injured)

Walk around Blackburn followed by a trip down the Peninsula. This included fish and chips and a swim in the sea. Very nice.

Note

Drove to Melbourne on the afternoon of my birthday. The trip took 5 1/2 hours instead of the usual 2 1/2. We could see the Epping fire developing approaching Melbourne . I looked it up on the CFA website and then in the Melway, only to discover it was likely to impact the freeway. Traffic was subsequently diverted down the highway, where it came to a halt and remained that way for 2 hours. We could see all tbe action as the fire developed, so l didn't mind. Sort of a busman's holiday.

Swim 35:00 [3] 1.0 km (35:00 / km)
(injured)

Swim in the Benalla pool. It was very crowded as the local secondary school had its swimming carnival outdoorsl and there was aqua aerobics and hydropool aerobics, each with its own music, indoors. Yes, another notch in the downhill slide today.Fortunately 5 is my lucky number.

Walk/jog 1:15:00 [3] 6.0 km (12:30 / km)
(injured)

A wander around the tracks on the Beechworth Gorge map, including across Spring Creek .l forgot the garmin so distance is a guess, but it wouldn't have been too far due to the rugged nature of the area. Knee was a bit sore on the downs but OK on the ups and so the recovery continues. It was pretty hot

Walk/jog 35:00 [3] 1.0 km (35:00 / km)
(injured)

2.5 % a week. That is the rate at which my knee is recovering. Today I swam in the Benalla pool, which was unusually crowded.

It rained last night in Benalla - for the first time in months - and that was great for the garden. However it was not such a great thing for the mattress I had on my trailer and was towing back to Benalla. I didn't check for rain before leaving, which was a mistake, but luckily I had put the mattress in a large plastic bag with only the rear end exposed, and drove fast all the way, so it survived.

Walk/jog 1:25:00 [3] 9.0 km (9:27 / km)
(injured)

Street O at Hays Paddock. I walked most of C course and then shuffled around collecting controls along the freeway reserve. It was quite warm.
Today was Valentines Day - and who better to take a large bunch of flowers to than Kevin Moloney (not red roses though!) He is substantially better, was sitting in a chair and has started rehab. He has started eating and had some maps to look at. I was glad l went as l was his first visitor since Saturday.

Walk/jog 47:45 [3] 5.54 km (8:37 / km)
(injured)

Street O at Box Hill North. I tried shuffling/jogging on and off, for the fjrst time in ages, and that seemed to work reasonably well. I went home to get my BBQ food but then couldn't find the BBQ.

I had a big dentist day - l 'm still getting the crown finalised. I celebrated once l got home with some lemon tart and ice cream!

Walk 44:00 [3] 4.4 km (10:00 / km)

Geoff's street-O at Wattle Park. I just walked and the controls were all on proper features and correctly placed, which was good. But there just weren't enough of them, as l completed the course in 44 minutes. I should have walked the runner's course, which l didn't see until later and which had well designed butterfly legs. I thought my knee was heaps better, thanks to my new super hard mattress that makes me feel 3 inches taller in the morning, until l got to the steps.......

Walk 1:10:00 [3] 7.0 km (10:00 / km)
(injured)

Walk around Blackburn with an old school friend, who was visiting from Colac ,and her two dogs.

MTBO 1:10:00 [3] 11.75 km (5:57 / km)
(injured)

The annual attempt at MTBO at Lysterfield Lake. I haven't been on my bike since the Westerfold event last year- so over a year! The course was almost the same as the last one here. Last time l was back 10 mins early and wished l'd done one more control. This time , at the same decision point, l attempted the extra control, but was so slow on the single track that l subsequently had to miss 3 easy controls to get back on time. Knee didn't mind the peddling, but wasn't too happy with the constant jarring as l stopped and started - yes, always that knee!

Stretching/exercises 30:00 [3]
(injured)

Strength work on an exercise bench l have borrowed. This included 100 quad strengthening lifts ( 10kg) and 70 hamstring lifts (10 kg). This should strenthen my knee muscles. The bench is coming back to Melbourne with me and l'm planning on using it about 4 times a week..

Walk 1:26:25 [3] 8.63 km (10:01 / km)
(injured)

Further exploration of previously unexplored (by me) parts of Reef Hills, including a cross country jog in an area with no undergrowth and hardly any sticks on the ground. It was very pleasant. I found two more small mining areas - after all, it is not called 'Reef Hills' for nothing. The mining was mainly alluvial and therefore in the gullies, and amounting to small diggings. There were a few deeper mines on the ridgetops. I am looking forward to when my knee will hold out for a longer cross country run.

The rest of the day was spent helping Peter renovate his house - hard work on a hot day.

Swim 35:00 [3] 1.0 km (35:00 / km)
(injured)

Very pleasant swim in the Benalla pool on a 'not so autumny' day (bit hotter), paced by a very pregnant walker in the next lane who could (annoyingly) almost keep up with me. Not to be outdone, I tried a little harder. The question for the day was how many little old ladies, carrying foam pool toys (i.e bashers) could fit in the one hydro pool. There seemed to be an awful lot of them (maybe 20) with not a lot of space for anything else.

NB. I AM enjoying my holiday at home. With great weather, pool and nice bush to walk in nearby, I could almost be at a resort!

Tuesday Feb 5, 2013 #

Walk 1:19:52 [3] 8.1 km (9:52 / km)
(injured)

Lovely longer morning walk at Reef Hills. I decided to explore some tracks I haven't been on before and found two more areas of mining detail - not Rowdy Flat style, but suitable enough for hiding a few controls - bringing the number of mining areas on the (not yet drawn) map up to 5. The area would be lovely open spur gully running and, while it would only be suitable for a club event, it would make for an awfully nice club event!

I'm also starting to feel a bit more positive about a full recovery - my knee was good the whole way and enjoyed the uneven terrain of the bush tracks. It didn't even hurt when I jarred it in a small hole! But I do still have to stop every now and then and make sure patella is aligned properly -so need to resist the urge to run for just a little longer.

Swim 35:00 [3] 1.0 km (35:00 / km)
(injured)

Swim in the Benalla pool. I have a week off work and am spending most of it up in Benalla, catching up on lots of things. It is lovely to be home and the air has a decided autumny feel about it today.

Sunday Feb 3, 2013 #

Walk 1:13:00 [3] 6.9 km (10:35 / km)
(injured)

Walk around Reef Hills. I haven't been here for ages and really enjoyed being out in the bush again. Although I just walked, my knee did not hurt at all and is definitely getting stronger - helped, of course, by not jarring it or doing anything adverse in recent times. I am hoping to start running in 2 weeks.

Swim 36:00 [3] 1.0 km (36:00 / km)
(injured)

Enjoyable swim in the Benalla pool with the company of one other patron.
