Walk/jog 1:06:00 [3] 7.0 km (9:26 / km)

Street O at Croydon. The event was a fair distance east of Melbourne and attendance numbers were down. I picked a fairly hilly route, my knee was sore and l just couldn't run. There were lots of groups of children out for Halloween.
I went to Tim Dent's memorial in the morning. It was well attended by orienteers, rogainers and bushwalkers. It was a fitting tribute to a well loved man.

Run 43:50 [3] 6.0 km (7:18 / km)

Run around Wang on a beautiful day followed by a riverside coffee. It was the day of the Ned Kelly run and lots of weary looking numbered plodders in the 50km / 42km events were still making their way along the tracks. Considering entering the 10 or 21k next year :)

Saturday Oct 27, 2018 #

Run 37:22 [3] 5.4 km (6:55 / km)

Run around Benalla lake and gardens, before a big day of gardening (and OA minutes). Felt quite good today.

Wednesday Oct 24, 2018 #

Run 47:00 [3] 6.3 km (7:28 / km)

Street O at Mont Albert. The event was in memory of the late Tim Dent. It was good to see lots of people there who came especially for the occasion.

Run 37:00 [3] 5.1 km (7:15 / km)

Run around Beleura Hill area of Mornington on a glorious sunny day.

Run 36:46 [3] 5.0 km (7:21 / km)

Run from the top of Beleura Hill, down to Mornington and back along some winding streets. I ran up all the hills (big ones) without stopping. I'd only just started when a young woman runner. with long blond hair and wearing scarcely more than a bikini, caught up with me and insisted on running with me for a while and chatting, before promoting her sports shop (with discounts for people like me, of course).

Note

I planned to go to Sprint into Spring and then down to Mornington to visit my sister. But l was a bit early, so detoured into Frankston, and then into the Subaru car yard. I didn't make it to orienteering and came out about 2 hours later with a signed contract for a newish (demo model, with 3000km on the clock) white Subaru XV. Bye bye to the elephant!

Run 38:00 [3] 5.4 km (7:02 / km)

Run around Blackburn lake and creeklands. It was a glorious morning - the sun was shining, birds were singing, frogs croaking, the scent of freshly washed flowers was in the air and l felt great.

Wednesday Oct 17, 2018 #

Run 46:00 [3] 5.65 km (8:08 / km)

Street O at Jordanville. I felt pretty sluggish the whole way (l'm not good at running in the evening) although had a rest when l was held up by train at one crossing. I stayed to collect controls afterwards, whereupon l noted the area seemed a little more seedy than l noticed in the event, with lots of people in the vicinity of the controls l was collecting. Attendance numbers seemed a little down tonight.

Orienteering 2:00:00 [3] 6.0 km (20:00 / km)

Course setting at Chiltern. It is Leigh's map and he has set the men's course. Note, while it is an interesting course, the map was made for club events and not all the minor features are marked. I have always had trouble on AWOC maps (e g the AWOC version of Rowdy Flat), and now l have a better understanding of why.

Orienteering 3:00:00 [3] 10.7 km (16:49 / km)

Course checking the men's course at Chilterns for the AWOC club championships. Looks like nice terrain and an enjoyable course. Now to set the women's and mod/easy courses. Peter came too and the first hour and half was really slow as l tried to teach him to navigate.

Wednesday Oct 10, 2018 #

Run 53:00 [3] 6.5 km (8:09 / km)

Street O at Mullauna on a cold and windy night (first night of the summer series). I could barely call this a run as my knee was sore and l struggled, walking up most hills. I collected controls after the event.
We received some sad news at the event - orienteer Tim Dent passed away last night.

Tuesday Oct 9, 2018 #

Run 21:29 [3] 3.0 km (7:10 / km)

Bit of a jog around Blackburn creeklands in light drizzle. I am somewhat glad to be home. Camping is OK for a while, but it is nice to be in a bed.

Orienteering 50:00 [3] 4.69 km (10:40 / km)

Fabulous terrain and course today. I had a few challenges, but enjoyed it so much l could still be out there. My downfall came in the downhill run to the second last control (in view of the finish). I felt fabulous, the wind was in my hair and l sprinted to the finish line like a horse heading for home. Sadly, in my haste, l punched the wrong control (didn't look). Mp.
Comment about the Mount Pleasant showground camping ground. Over the weekend the grounds played host to a Saturday market, a goat show, a Bicycle SA tour (started at 6:15 am today, where l woke to around 50 cars parked near where we were camped, and l hadn't heard a thing) and a horse show today. A very busy showground!

Orienteering 57:00 [3] 5.57 km (10:14 / km)

Australian long distance championships. I messed up #1, going up the wrong gully and then was just generally slow, especially on the uphills. A comparison with others regarding the long leg made me think l had made the wrong route choice, but then l found out Jenny Bourne had gone the same way. I was a bit disappointed with my placing, but had a good day regardless.

Friday Oct 5, 2018 #

Run 34:00 [3] 5.01 km (6:47 / km)

Run on the Amy Gillett bike track to loosen up. Given l am camping, l am awfully glad the weather has improved.

Orienteering 24:34 [3] 3.0 km (8:11 / km)

'Your inner compass has fogged up and your map is hard to read'. Why are my stars so accurate? Today l went really well until l winged it across the grass - looking for a mound instead of a depression. I lost 4 minutes there. But l was in good company - both Ron and Tash Key made the same mistake. My fault. I should have been more careful.
