Orienteering 1:11:00 [3] 6.85 km (10:22 / km)

Today was a State Series event at Choke'em Gully. My left leg was quite seized up and I limped around course 5. It was a really hilly course and I was not really up to hills.

Now here comes the dilemma. I have been looking route choices of various people on route gadget - and it seems that most of the top orienteers take the direct route (or almost the direct route) where I have tended to take the flatter longer route (which I don't have the speed for). I have been thinking that it is time to change tactics.

Yesterday I tried to be more direct than usual and this worked. I would have liked to have done the same today but the pulled hammy made the hills problematic. But hills were not to be avoided on this map - so I ended up both going up the hills and going a greater distance! The end result - very slow - and not a good placing amongst my peers

Orienteering 49:00 [3] 4.5 km (10:53 / km)

Hooray, the start of 3 days of orienteering. The first day was a Bendigo club event at Diamond Hill. The first challenge - finding the directions to the start - was accomplished thanks to Louise's hint from last week. I was a bit late so decided to do the B hard short. A very nice woman at the start advised me to tell the organisers that I was a novice and then I would get a cheaper rate but - looking at the start table - I didn't think I was going to get away with that one.

Bendigo sets great technical courses and this was no exception. There were no tracks on the maps but heaps on the ground - but these were able to be ignored. I am often confused by tracks so I enjoyed their ommission from the map. I had a bit of difficulty on 7 (the touristy mine area) and 10, where I must have headed off in slightly the wrong direction. But otherwise nice.

The only downside was that I slipped near the start and pulled my hamstring again - which was disappointing as I was looking forward to the other 2 days.

Yoga 1:00:00 [2]

Don't worry - I am still alive. I have just been in hibernation for a few days (which happens every year as the days get shorter). It has been so cold and I get really runny eyes and nose when there is a cold wind. So indoors and in the shops it has been.

Anyway, there is a weekend of orienteering to look forward to, so I thought that I had better go to yoga today - for a stretch of those pesky hamstrings - before embarking on the weekend's activities.

Walk 55:00 [2] 5.5 km (10:00 / km)

I am really looking forward to the coming long weekend of orienteering so plan to take it fairly easy this week as my hamstrings are still tight and I want to be able to run (or sorts) this weekend. So walking it was tonight - in the dark, around Blackburn. I am feeling much better today then yesterday.

Nothing special to report on - other than a further reflection on the shape of Mr and Ms Average these days. The new trains here are designed with tiny, narrow seats and no leg room (comfortable for short skinny girls ie Asian girls). However, stand up and it is another story. Even I can hardly reach the new overhead bars and anyone shorter than me (i.e. most people) has no hope. So it appears that the ideal train traveller is skinny with short legs but with super long arms (sort of like a monkey).
