Orienteering 1:17:00 [3] 6.49 km (11:52 / km)
Bendigo Bush Classic at Mosquito Creek. I wasn't going to go as I worked from 4am yesterday morning until 7 pm last night and we had our work Christmas party (yes, in July) last night, but I braved the rain and cold and went.
The area had fairly subtle terrain and so this event was a great training exercise for me as I am very poor at following a bearing. There were a number of learnings from today's event, summed up as:
- DO NOT pre-enter
- DO remember to enter once you arrive at the event
- If you think you are on the right bearing, YOU ARE MOST DEFINITELY NOT
- If you think you are on the wrong bearing, YOU ARE ACTUALLY ON THE RIGHT BEARING
- on a 1:15,000 map (I haven't been on one of these for a while), that huge gully on the ground is actually that little dip in the contours!
Basically that sums up the day. Except that it was LOVELY to be out in the bush again and I enjoyed being mostly by myself.
I think I might have to go to a few more of these events.
