MTBO 2:06:00 [3] 15.0 km (8:24 / km)

Aus champs MTBO long distance. I could wing the sprint and the middle on no training, but l couldn't wing the long, especially as this map (near Dunolly) had hills. Was again confused on the way to #1, took some bad route choices, got off and walked multiple times, and went somewhat further than the course planner intended. I also had a bit of trouble decifering the terrain with the 10 m contours. 13/13 (last). A few seconds slower than Alison Radford, who is a presentable navigator and orienteer, but who had done a similar amount of training to me.

Overall, a very enjoyable and quite social weekend (once l had sorted the accommodation issues). Knee also seems much happier than it has ever been after an orienteering event.

MTBO 22:00 [3] 5.5 km (4:00 / km)

Aus champs MTBO sprint. Windy and cold. Was going well, no mistakes, until l became confused in the finish chute area and lost 2 minutes and possibly a couple of places. I couldn't make sense of the mapping in the school area. Turns out l was not the only one. 9/13

MTBO 1:02:00 [3] 11.5 km (5:23 / km)

Aus champs MTBO middle distance. I had a slow start as couldn't make sense of the tracks to #1, by which time the next starter caught me. Then l settled in. Then it hailed and rained heavily, accompanied by a clap of thunder, and the tracks became slippery. 8/13 (which l was quite pleased about, given l never ride between events, and 4 of those ahead of me were from NZ). Still windy and cold.

Note

Australian Mass Start MTBO championships at Marlborough Vic. I would have won BUT.....

Aldi special comfortable 4 person tent virtually disintegrated in the storm. At 4 am after no sleep and several hours watching the tent cave in and out, a pole snapped and then l snapped and called it a night. At 5 am l bundled the tent into the car and drove back to Melb. After a snooze, l returned in the afternoon with my trusty MacPac hike tent, which l should have brought in the first place. HORRIBLE night.
