Orienteering 7:46:00 [4] 24.29 mi (19:11 / mi) +3386ft 16:57 / mi

Day Two of the Snowgaine. We knew that we would not capture as many controls, due to the course that Mark Dominie laid out. Since we would not run, we could not possibly get to the two farthest clusters of controls. So we got what we could and had a not-too-strenuous walk back to the hash house.

We ended up third in our age group, not bad for walking only.

My knee felt pretty good, although not perfect, but the medication certainly helped overnight. We both had good energy today, so that was nice.

Again, I forgot to hit the stop button on time.

Orienteering 7:40:00 [4] 22.31 mi (20:37 / mi) +3360ft 18:03 / mi

First day of the CNYO Snowgaine in Hubbardsville, New York. Frank Boscoe and I teamed up for the second time in the snowgaine, but this time we would limit ourselves to walking only due to my recovering knee.

The big question in my mind was whether the knee had recovered enough to handle the rough terrain and the long mileage. The answer is a resounding maybe--I did cover 22+miles, but the knee was hurting toward the end of day one. Of course, I took an anti-inflammatory before heading to bed.

Didn't get to stop the watch right at the end, but close enough since I didn't do anything after we finished in 7 hours and 40 minutes.

Hiking 56:12 [3] 1.41 mi (39:52 / mi) +341ft 32:26 / mi

Drove to the Lee Town Park on Golden Hill Road, just over a mile from home, where Colette and I went geocaching. This is a good alternative to taking the day off completely as I taper for the upcoming Snowgaine.

This little park has some trails and lots of cliff faces that have some nice views to the west, mainly Laurel Lake near Route 20.

Found two caches, all that we were looking for.

Hiking 2:52:00 [3] 7.8 mi (22:03 / mi) +1500ft 18:39 / mi

Hiked on the AT heading north from Goose Pond Road in Tyringham to Route 20 in Becket, where I turned around and retraced my route.

Another rather nice sunny day. Only met one other person, a guy who was sitting on the side of the trail, with his jacket hanging from a tree and a cellphone in his hands. He said hi and I asked if he was hiking or just enjoying the woods. He said he had come out to hike and had started at Route 20. Interesting, since I had not seen him on the trail. When I mentioned that, he fessed up that it was his first time there and he had gotten off the trail. I suspect that he was using his cellphone to figure out the rest of his route. ;-)

No map today as I forgot my Suunto--must have really wanted to get out if I forgot that.
