Hiking (bushwhacking) 1:12:50 [3] 3.34 mi (21:48 / mi) +656ft 18:23 / mi

Geocaching with Colette at the Chalet Wildlife Management Area in Windsor. These caches were placed just a week ago and since it was an area that we've never been to, we decided to go for it.

Turns out that the woods kind of suck--lots of new growth combined with briars, so the bushwhacking was a constant battle to weave a decent route through all the branches at face level. And the terrain was rather bland, too.

We managed to snag five caches over two hours and 19 minutes, so it wasn't a complete bust.

Walking 5:24 [3] 0.34 mi (15:53 / mi)

Colette and I drove to Housatonic and parked at the cemetery so that we could head north from there on the rail trail. She would do some geocaching and I hoped to run four miles.

So this was my warm-up walk with her.

3 PM

Trail Running 41:01 [3] 4.0 mi (10:15 / mi) +98ft 10:01 / mi

And my out-and-back run on the nearly flat rail trail. Fairly dry for the most part, so there wasn't a lot of dodging wet spots today.

Felt rather sluggish, but most likely that's just because I'm not in shape. The knee felt pretty good, although when I was done the outside of the knee was a bit achy, which is fine since the knee cartilage was torn on the inside edge of the knee.

4 PM

Walking 20:56 [3] 1.34 mi (15:37 / mi)

Cool-down walk back to the car. Colette was already there, having bagged only one of three caches--she needs more practice.

Hiking 30:25 [3] 2.0 mi (15:12 / mi) +312ft 13:15 / mi

A warm-up hike in Kennedy Park at a good clip so that I could do a run afterwards.

4 PM

Trail Running 36:45 [3] 3.0 mi (12:15 / mi) +364ft 10:59 / mi

And my longest run since the knee surgery. Sadly out of shape for running, but the knee felt fine. Will re-evaluate tomorrow after a good night's sleep.

Walking 2:28 [3] 0.15 mi (16:28 / mi)

And a slow walk back to the car to cool down and perhaps prevent some stiffness later?

Hiking 1:20:05 [3] 3.62 mi (22:07 / mi) +715ft 18:38 / mi

Short outing in October Mountain State Forest on the AT--mainly to test a new app for tracking my moves on the trail, plus a chance to use the Galaxy S7 for some photos and a video.

Walking 38:00 [3] 1.0 mi (38:00 / mi) +70ft 35:39 / mi

I decided to take it easy for a couple of days to let my legs recover a bit.

But in preparation for my AT hike, I've gone high tech and bought a smartphone. And, of course, it didn't take long before a geocaching app was installed.

So while Colette was out doing some serious geocaching in Westfield, I decided to walk down the hill, check for mail and try out the Galaxy S7 as a geocaching device.

I must say it was impressive--very sensitive to my movements and guite precise in locating the cache.

My other updated device is a new Suunto Ambit3 Peak which now uploads the day's activity via Bluetooth, so it will sync easily with the new smartphone while on the AT. All these devices need battery power, so I've bought an external battery pack to keep them charged while on the trail.
