Hiking 2:24:30 [3] 8.08 mi (17:53 / mi) +98ft 17:41 / mi

Hike with Colette along the rail trail in Housatonic. The trail was in good shape, with only a few avoidable wet areas. This was an out-and-back hike.

I wanted something easy and flat after yesterday's hilly hike and this was the perfect venue.

4 PM

Walking 42:55 [3] 2.55 mi (16:50 / mi) +160ft 15:53 / mi

Out to the black cows and back, with a short out-and-back on Washington Mtn. Road. This was a chance to burn some calories ahead of the pizza at dinner.

Walking 1:11:09 [3] 4.13 mi (17:14 / mi) +250ft 16:18 / mi

Walk with Colette out toward Woods Pond and back. Light rain and some wind, but fairly warm.

Hiking (some jogging) 2:26:15 [3] 6.45 mi (22:41 / mi) +1015ft 19:44 / mi

Back to the bike trails to the south of Reservoir Road in Lenox, now that they are clear and easy to follow once again. However, they were wet from the recent rain and therefor muddy and slippery in spots; nonetheless, most of the trail was soft and had good footing.

Spotted at least 16 Red Newts--nice to see them again.

Hiking 3:15:58 [3] 6.19 mi (31:39 / mi) +1093ft 27:07 / mi

Another exploratory hike along Unkamit's Path with Skip Frey from Chester. We met at the Goldmine Brook Trail on Route 20 and drove to the parking lot on Round Hill Road. From there we were hoping to follow Unkamit's Path, as shown on the downloadable maps from the Western Mass Hilltown Hikers website.

The maps look definitive; however, finding the trail is not easy. While in many places it is marked with white blazes, the trail crosses private property, and often there are no markers at all. The trail also enters various state parks/forests, where it has not been officially sanctioned, and the markers have been either removed by scraping or over-painted with dark paint.

Right from the start, we found some white blazes, but they then disappeard, so we took a jeep road and looked for the trail where it crossed the road.

We managed to follow the marked trail maybe 80% of the way, and otherwise we were on parallel logging roads, etc. Ultimately we did cross Goldmine Brook and took the trail that followed the brook downhill to the car.

Walking 38:54 [3] 2.1 mi (18:31 / mi) +210ft 16:55 / mi

Walk with Colette on the condo grounds. Flowers are starting to appear, and the bugs will soon be here, too.

Walking 1:40:46 [3] 6.01 mi (16:46 / mi) +350ft 15:53 / mi

Walk with Colette from the condo, a clockwise loop up to Golden Hill then out to Woods Pond and back home. This is a bit early for my tastes, but nice to get it done.

2 PM

Walking 1:22:45 [3] 5.01 mi (16:31 / mi) +225ft 15:51 / mi

Out to Woods Pond and a bit further before retracing my steps.

Hiking 1:56:43 [3] 6.6 mi (17:41 / mi) +400ft 16:43 / mi

Back at Bard College, so time to check out the trails on campus and in Tivoli Bay. The good news is that the trails on campus are fairly dry, as are the higher trails in Tiviol, but the bad news is that the lower trails are still very wet, muddy and slippery.

2 PM

Walking 1:34:38 [3] 5.42 mi (17:28 / mi) +150ft 17:01 / mi

Just wandering around Bard College on the roads and paved paths, plus a little bit on some roads close by.

Walking 1:07:32 [3] 4.11 mi (16:26 / mi) +130ft 15:57 / mi

Walk with Colette out towards Woods Pond and back; strong winds made for a chilly morning.

Hiking (bushwhacking) 1:07:39 [3] 2.12 mi (31:55 / mi) +125ft 30:13 / mi

I'm trying to learn the actual route of Unkamit's Path which runs from Becket to Westfield. However, some of the trail crosses private lands, so there are no blazes to follow in those sections.

Today I was hoping to find the trail that runs from McNerny Road to Stanley Road, both in Becket.

Alas, the "trail" isn't marked, nor is it cleared in any way that I could discern. After a mile of following the West Branch of the Westfield River, I gave up and just headed back to the car. More exploration is needed.

5 PM

Walking 51:29 [3] 3.04 mi (16:56 / mi) +200ft 15:57 / mi

After-dinner walk with Colette for one mile on the condo grounds, and then I did another couple of miles by visiting the black cows and back.

Walking 2:19:20 [3] 8.65 mi (16:06 / mi) +450ft 15:21 / mi

A counter-clockwise loop starting from the condo. Basically, out to Woods Pond, then up Delafield and over to Golden Hill before heading home. Got caught in a short downpour, which, combined with the winds on Golden Hill, made for a miserable cold experience for a while. That hot shower after the walk felt great though. :)

6 PM

Walking 28:12 [3] 1.36 mi (20:44 / mi) +170ft 18:32 / mi

After-dinner walk with Colette on the condo grounds. Strong winds and light rain sent us back inside to pick up some rain gear at the start of our walk. Nice walk, and even picked up the mail while we were at it.
