Sunday Jan 31 #

Hiking 1:56:30 [3] 7.01 mi (16:37 / mi) +75ft 16:27 / mi

Hike on the Housatonic Rail Trail, an out-an-back. The snow had been decently compacted by lots of hikers and skiers, but it was soft in some areas.

Did an out-and-back.

Saturday Jan 30 #

Received my first Covid-19 vaccination today in the morning, a rare benefit (?) of growing old.

Hiking 1:13:46 [3] 4.01 mi (18:24 / mi) +575ft 16:12 / mi

Hike from New Lenox Road in the afternoon. I was hoping to get on some biked trails, but no sign of any fat-tire biking at all, so I stuck to the dirt road which had been driven on by 4-wheeled vehicles and snowmobiles.

I felt great when I started, but after a mile and a half, I seemed to be getting fairly tired. I kept going, at a slower pace, but I wasn't feeling right and then I wondered if the vaccine might be an issue. It was cold enough not to keep going and tempt fate, so I reversed course at two miles and did the downhill hike to the car.

Walking 42:36 [3] 2.56 mi (16:38 / mi) +180ft 15:36 / mi

Walk on the condo grounds. 1°F when I started, wind chill dropped that to -12°F. Fully bundled up, so no problem with the temperature.

Hiking 1:01:02 [3] 3.81 mi (16:01 / mi) +120ft 15:33 / mi

Hike from the south end of Woods Pond along Woodland Road, an out-and-back.

Thursday Jan 28 #

Hiking 2:28:12 [3] 6.5 mi (22:48 / mi) +775ft 20:29 / mi

Hike with Colette on the bike trails to the south of Reservoir Road. We started out near the gate to the reservoirs and followed some groomed bike trails for a while, but then got to the usual ungroomed trails. We climbed to the Burbank Trail and then went south past Monk's Pond and turned right at the tip of the ridge. And that was some windy ridgeline as we worked out way back northeast and got back on the groomed trail.

Saw a few folks, two hikers, but no bikers.

Wednesday Jan 27 #

Hiking 2:33:14 [3] 7.0 mi (21:53 / mi) +558ft 20:21 / mi

Hike on the bike trails to the south of Reservoir Road. About 4" of new snow on the trail, and no sign of the fattire bikers, so the going was slow and more difficult than normal. Didn't meet anyone on the trails.

Tuesday Jan 26 #

Walking 1:43:54 [3] 6.31 mi (16:28 / mi) +453ft 15:25 / mi

Walk with Colette out to Woods Pond and then down Crystal Street enroute to the condo. Roads are absolutely perfect, but the incoming snowstorm will change that status.

Monday Jan 25 #

Hiking 2:19:26 [3] 7.08 mi (19:42 / mi) +950ft 17:28 / mi

Hike in Beartown State Forest on the Wildcat and Beartown Mountain Trail, a clockwise lollipop route.

I wasn't sure what I'd find on the Wildcat Trail in terms of footing; it started out decently with some snowshoes tracks to follow, but, alas, whoever was snowshoeing turned around after about a half-mile. The rest of the way up to the shelter was untracked and rather slow going.

But, the highlight of the Wildcat Trail was spotting a bear's track where he crossed the trail. Rather unusual in the winter, but I presume it was a male, since most females would already be hunkered down in their den for the winter.
