Running (Road) 1:08:24 [3] 16.16 km (4:14 / km) +173m 4:01 / km

Handy 10miles. did the usual loop but in reverse to get some strava records on the hills that i usually come down. Have the second best times on both of them, the best time for the 600m (8.5%gradient) fox road drive is 43sec while my time is 2min56 and on the other climb 700m (6.3%) the record is 48sec and i was 3min10. Maybe im not a strong as i though i was :-) or maybe i need to drive a few routes. Really enjoyed running from Blackrock castle towards Jacobs Island in the wind, rain and misery.

Note

Pretty good months training for September. Trained everyday and 528.91km total and just under 50hrs of training in the 30days. First time going over the 500km mark for a months training.

And i have the boast of getting a kiss of the worlds most successful orienteer after her last medal at a world championships. http://news.worldofo.com/2013/09/30/thanks-for-all... (once thats not why she has packed it in)

First hill sets of the new season. Pushed hard in the lead pack and won all 5 of them which was nice. Hill isnt too steep just a long drag with a kick half ways through that the quads didnt enjoy.

Orienteering ◪ (MMM Day 2) 4:34:48 [3] 24.5 km (11:13 / km) +1585m 8:28 / km
shoes: Asics Gel Noosa Tri-8

We slept and ate like kings at the camp site seeing as we were carrying about 10kgs eac while everyone else had about 5. Memo to self, lighter packs is a good idea if you want to race.

Mass start on day 2 but we just went about our business as we did yesterday. Made sure all the circles were right and off we went, single file up the wall trail. Into the boulder at 1 no problem. Then straight into the scatter. Took them in A,B,C. Over the col and across the slope to A, up to the col and left to the Tor to get B and then back around the slopes of Binnian for C. Feed break here. Dropped down to the lake for control 5 and then the long leg to 6 we kept low and climbed to the crags. Across the hills then to get D and E in alphabetical order (we were very creative). Spotted D from about 1km away so headed for it then dropped to get E in the river. Back up to the trail where we ran with Thierry last year and up the slope to the 9th control point no problems. Dropped down to Lukes mountain and nailed 10 but lost time on 11 getting confused with all the crags on the ground and only 3 on the map. Then into the forest and pushed rob all the way to the line.

Finished in 6th on the B Class overall and 4th male team. Not bad for a first attempt. Well done to Jonny K and Shane on the win and Colm and Mark on an impressive 2nd place.

Still felt relatively strong after finishing so I guess the miles are starting to work by building the strength. Also rob and I discovered that caffeine leads to a very energetic and hyper josh who bounces up mountains.

Great weekend racing with a great team mate who pushed himself well into the red zone on both days for the cause
9 PM

Note

Great weekend in the mountains with Robrunner doing our first mountain marathon and what a great race. Will update this at some stage tomorrow.

Orienteering ◪ (MMM Day 1) 5:14:36 [3] 24.48 km (12:51 / km) +1332m 10:06 / km
shoes: Asics Gel Noosa Tri-8

Through the usual start routine, punch the start and the fun began. We grabbed the co-ordinates and found a flat place to plot the points. First control was easy, up along the wall and in along the clearing to the foot of the crag, had to reassure rob that this was the right crag as the control was around the corner. Then we tried to go through the forest but bailed back out to the mountain, found the wall, along to the stream, bearing, perfect hit the clearing but no sign of a control. Spent 15minutes or so mucking around until we decided to try across the river where the control was. Back on track to 3 and following the stream into the fog. Nice downhill leg to 4 and a quick feed stop here. Then the long leg to 5. Started well, out of the forest up the stream and over the fence. Followed the bearing but I missed it and we had to relocate losing maybe another 5-10minutes here as everything looked the same in the fog. No came the scatter controls. We decided to take the one in the quarry first to avoid climbing so much and then hit the crag. Got the both clean. Along the slope to 8 where rob began to wobble a bit but we got a gel into him and he perked back up. Across the wall and we came thundering down to the control only to both flop into a marsh much to the amusement of everyone else around. Down to the stile and straight up Slieve Muck. Became MrMotivator here as I made sure rob kept moving on the climb. Down the other side and out to the spur. Along the wall, through the rocky ground and came a bit to the right of control 11 but knew where I was. Then we dropped to the reservoir in search of good running and there was none at all. Frustrating run/walk/bushwack to the finish.

Not the best day, too many errors but live and learn

Running (Track) tempo 38:12 [4] 10.21 km (3:44 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel Noosa Tri-8

Decided to do a tempo today seeing as i will be missing the tempo fun tomorrow night. First one of the season, was jumping between intensity 3 (for most of the run) and intensity 4 (occasionally, and towards the end when i trained the kick with 400m to go) Weather was glorious and just bashed out the laps. Very boring running the 25laps alone but a solid time all the same, was aiming for 6min/mile and was bang on that by the end.

(logging as intensity 4 as i did reach that intensity).

Long day recruiting for UCCO, then down to the track to meet up for the 70minute run, Gruff etc (just back from injury) michael, eric and ben took off and myself and john left them away and did our own thing, keeping the pace handy. Gruff damaged whatever injury he had by running to fast and ben rolled an ankle pushing too hard when maybe he shouldnt have. Handy evening and a grand ol chat again with John as we knocked out the miles
10 PM

Note

Going to get 10miles in again tomorrow morning, then do some shopping and back to campus to set up the orienteering for all the new recruits in the College. Then thursday some of the guys are doing a tempo but with the mournes i plan on finding someone who is running for 70mins and tagging along with them, then easy run friday morning. Race hard for the weekend but train straight through

Brigade orienteering champs in kilworth. pretty good race to start the season, small miss on 5 just into the wrong depression first, miss on 8 where the map is sketchy as the earth wall is not really there as a feature but I definitely picked the optimum routechoice on this leg, a route nobody else appears to have even seen it on the map other than me, and a small loss on 13 aswell. Maybe 90sec-2mins of mistakes. Map needs updating though lots not on it and some stuff on it that isnt there. Weather was bad, fog, driving rain and high winds. Got the win by 20mins and just under the EWT of 60mins, and sub 5min.kms on Kilworth is good to start the season

Beat my previous best on the Fingerpost roundabout to the bottom of coach hill by 57seconds and beat my pb up ballitemple hill by 11sec. Note

Learned a lot after the weekend about myself and the kit needed. Perhaps the route was too long, 2 days of about 20km or so prob would have sufficed as training for the MMM but survived it anyway

Day 2
(Distance, time and climb not 100% accurate as had to switch between both garmins but will sort this out)

Up at 7.30am to get breakie in which for me was beans and bacon in my ''rat'' pack, went down a treat. Then we took down the tent, distributed the weight a bit more evenly as rob had now starting eating through his supplies as had I. Started with a road run at 9am as we hoped. The first 1km was uphill just to wake the legs. We stopped at a stream here, filled the water bottles and used the purifying tabs i had from my rations.

I was on Nav duty for day 2. Followed the road towards Curragh Beg and on then towards Boheeshill. On towards the Ballaghneama Gap where we jumped out onto the mountain to start the climbing in the hills again for the second day. Found the fences which proved very handy and we ran/hiked/rock climbed to the two summits on Knockaunanattin West (~467m) top along with the main summit (~569m). Then we lost some height before again starting to climb up towards and to the summit of Stumpa Duloigh West Top (~663m) followed the fence then again for a while to the Col at (~603m). Then straight up a very very steep slope to Stumpa Duloigh which was 784m high. Took in the view of the Reeks and Kemare Bay to the south could still see Inch which we could see for most of yesterday aswell. Now came the nice decent off Stumpa along the fence to Knocknabreeda (~569m) and to Crossderry, i think is the name, at ~489m. Contoured then around Mothailin (~506m). We had to bushwack in order to get down to the main road which took what seemed like an age over very rocky ground with deep heather and grass covering. Made it out to the road and found a crossing point taking a ~600meter long dog leg off the route. Then along the road to Lord Brandons cottage where we took a pit stop and fueled up with food etc before the final 10miles or so.

We then ran the trails along the side of the Upper lake passing Queens Cottage and on up to Galway bridge where more water was taken on. We then followed the valley to the south and found the Old Kenmare road. More new territory for me. Through theh Esknamucky Glen, past the Cores Cascade and along past the foot of Torc. Continued to follow the trails to the Upper car park at Torc, down the trails, across the front of Bill Cullens house and down a few more trails which seemed to drag on and on. We hit the road and rob said we were nearly there now so i pushed to get up the last hill, crested it, down the final little hill, touch the car, check the time!

Survived the run but it did hurt. Great experience and a great 2 days adventuring in the hills seeing very few people out and about.

Got hot showers and water in Dooby's before heading to get grub in the hotel nearby. Bangers and mash hit the spot just right. The Flan would be proud as i had ''the spud''. Into the trusty Corolla and homeward bound. Got in the door, dumped the kit and into bed.
