First time running nationals for me and a good experience. Found the cork man in the kerry strip before getting in the pens with the ~250 other guys all looking for the good position at the first corner. Followed Alex out the straight and we were just in the top 20 by the first bend, knew i would lose places as the race went on but at the same time knew i had to start fast and not get stuck too far back. The course was soft in places but i picked good lines, even if they were different to almost everyone else. The hills out there were tough and could feel it in the glutes, you just had to get up them fast seeing as they were too short to get into a rhythm on. Suffered on the last lap and a half as the legs tightened and just had to dig in and hold on. Finished up in 29th place, just inside the goal of top30 at nationals. The Leevale mens team finished in 3rd place and the Cork team were 2nd, so 2 more national medals in the bag. The athletes in the field were really high quality. Our number one athlete, he was 6th in Jerry farnan just outside 5minute mile pace for 5miles and is county senior champ, only came in 5th place and over 30seconds back on the leaders.
